8:12 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story
A quick update to Ryan Gordon's .plan file notes that the recently released 2.6 version of America's Army will be coming to Mac OS X soon. This latest version of the Unreal Tournament-based freeware shooter features a new game browser, support for competitive gaming, and more multiplayer missions.
Here's a breakdown of one of the new missions, called "Border."
In the explosive action of the Border mission, America's Army players must infiltrate the base of operations of a small known terrorist cell. Intelligence reports confirm that the terrorists are planning synchronized bombing strikes at several different civilian landmarks and that high-level sensitive information (Precious Cargo) pertaining to these lethal strikes is being kept at this operations base. A squad from the 172nd Sep. Infantry BDE must secure the precious cargo located in this border village and then proceed safely to the extraction point. For more America's Army information on version 2.6, check out their community site. IMG will post word when the official Mac client is available.

Darwinia In Action
8:12 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story
Hooked Gamers recently posted a review of the PC version of Darwinia. Introversion Software's unique real time strategy game enlists players in the fight to save a virtual theme park world from the assault of a deadly computer virus. Hooked Gamers gave Darwinia a final score of 8 out of 10.
From the review:
Darwinia is a very interesting game with a fresh new concept and new gameplay mechanics for the Strategy genre. It finds inspiration from many other great games, mainly Tron and Uplink, but it also takes some things from games like Command & Conquer and Warcraft III. While it relies heavily on micromanagement, there's a lot of group control while moving the Darwinians. Unfortunately, many parts feel unpolished and I'm still wondering why are Darwinians so important for AI research if they are so stupid they can hardly move in a straight line. For every creative and interesting concept in the game you will find a frustrating issue that prevents you from enjoying it. If you liked Warcraft III's new focus on micromanagement you will find much more challenge in trying to handle your units and issuing orders without losing control of your squadrons. Either way, for its budget price you won't be able to find anything better. Props to Introversion Software, one of the last (if not the last) garage programmers, for making a very deep and creative game. It had the potential to be a hit but it makes a pretty good showing nonetheless. To read the full review and check out a collection of screenshots follow the link below.
