Carmack, Sweeney Talk Shaders
2:55 PM | Evan Holt | Comment on this story

The gaming web site Beyond3d has an interesting little article about the controversy surrounding Shader Model 3.0 between ATi and nVidia.

nVidia believes that Vertex Texturing should be part of the Shader Model 3.0 while ATi disagrees.

From Beyond3D:

Vertex Texturing is the capability of supporting texture access from within the vertex shader. Typical usage of this is simulation of physics effects where the physics model is run on the pixel shader and the results are shown on screen by reading back this result and displaying it as geometry. For example, particle effects and cloth animation can be achieved using this principle.
Beyond3D has talked to both John Carmack from id software and Tim Sweeney from Epic games regarding this issue and how they handle it between the two graphics card companies. You can read the question and answer session following the link below.

Under The Sea With SpongeBob
10:37 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Applelinks has descended into the ocean depths to offer a review of the Spongebob Squarepants The Movie game. The adventure title details the exploits of SpongeBob and friends in a plot which roughly follows that of the movie. Players take control of various characters from the cartoon as they work to save all of Bikini Bottom. Applelinks gave SpongeBob SquarePants The Movie a rating of 2 out of 5.

From the review:

Roughly following the outline of the SpongeBob movie, SpongeBob Squarepants the Movie (the game) starts out with SpongeBob preparing to accept a promotion to manage the new Krusty Krab restaurant, Krusty Krab 2, located conveniently next door to the original restaurant. Of course, or perhaps I should say, for no apparent reason, SpongeBob must first manage to steal some toothpaste from his neighbor, Squidward. From there follows a basically linear, essentially sequential series of events that unfortunately seldom require much effort beyond making sure that you've visited the four or five locations available in each "chapter" and picked up all the available items.

Legion Arena Reviewed
10:37 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

The reviews are on the march for Slitherine's Legion Arena. This time Worthplaying takes a look at the PC version of the game. The Role Playing Strategy title puts players in charge of their own legion which they must shape into a lethal fighting force before sending it out to do battle in one of over 100 scenarios. Worthplaying gave Legion Arena 7.5 out of 10.

From the review:

Battles, depending on the number of units present, are generally completed within a matter of minutes. With the objective of killing a certain number of enemy soldiers, keeping casualties within set limits, or merely surviving for a certain period of time, battles are surprisingly swift and rarely last longer than 10 or 15 minutes. This is ideal for gamers who want to experience a few different battles in one short sitting. Once the enemy is broken, a single-player game immediately concludes as broken units will not rally and carry on the fight.
Freeverse Software is currently working on the Mac version of Legion Arena. The entire review and a host of screenshots can be found at the site listed below.
