Planet Civilization is offering an audio interview with Civlization IV lead designer Soren Johnson. The interview covers a range of topics including a look back at past titles, the importance of multiplayer, and possible new games in the works.

So can we expect something new from Firaxis? There hasn't been a new idea since Colonization.
Soren Johnson (Firaxis):
Yea, since the founding of Firaxis all the games we have released were remakes. But we are very aware that we need to mix something new with some of the old. But I don't think it's the same thing as with movies, where sequels always suck and are less creative. I think with games it makes sense to continue to make sequels, as the technology is improving and you can do stuff which you couldn't do before. I think Civilization is going to be like Chess. There will always be people who want to play a version from here until... forever, hopefully. [laughs]
We're definitely having some ideas about some genres in strategy games that we think have lost a lot of interest because they're starting to repeat themselves, and we have some ideas on how to re-invent them. We're really excited about that.

Kikizo Games has posted the results a short interview with John Carmack of id Software to ring in the new year. Probably best known as the creator of the Doom series, Carmack has yet to rest on his laurels, and continues to make titles for the gaming community.
One of his current projects includes a Doom RPG for the cellphone market, and he notes the high points of this title:
Doom RPG brought together a lot of positive traits - the turn based RPG play could be done one-handed with the phone, it could still leverage some of the immersion of 3D graphics with the smooth sliding between positions, we could borrow a lot of existing media from the original game, and it could be done at about the same time the Doom movie would be released, which we weren't able to do with any major PC / console title.In a nod to the Mac gaming community, he adds that id will continue to support a multitude of gaming markets, including the Mac platform.
Also discussed in the interview are his thoughts on the Doom movie, id's future plans, and the challenges of designing a cellphone game.

Possible New WoW Alliance Race?

Speculation has been rampant about which new race Alliance players will have available after the release of The Burning Crusade, the first expansion for Blizzard's extrememly popular World of Warcraft MMORPG. The WoW Wiki examines one of the more popular possibilities: the Draenei.
Until recently the rumors about the Draenei centered around the belief that Blizzard would give an "ugly" race to the Alliance to balance out the "pretty" race for the Horde, and that the Draenei are from Outland, an area which will figure prominently in the expansion. The February 2006 issue of Computer Games Magazine added fuel to the flames by claiming the new race would indeed be the Draenei.
Blizzard has officially denied giving any information about the new race to any magazine. CGM's editor-in-chief admits the information should have been labeled as a rumor, but stands by the magazine's sources.
There was an error in the article. It should have been noted that the information about the Draenei being the playable race is, in fact, still a rumor; while we're confidant our sources are accurate, it should not have been presented as a statement of fact. WoW: A Closer Look At Patch 1.9

With the recent release of the 1.9 patch for Blizzard's successful World of Warcraft MMORPG, Gamespy is offering a brief look at the new content players can expect to enjoy. The article covers the Ahn'Qiraj raid instances, linked auction houses, and numerous interface and gameplay tweaks.
The biggest additions are in Silithus, with the addition of 2 new raid instances collectively known as the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj. The first is a 20-man raid called the Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj, the second a 40-man raid called the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj.The entire article can be found at the link below.

However, no one is yet able to enter the instance, as there's a special world event needed to open the gates on each server. This became clear while roaming through Ironforge (on the Alliance side), as a new group of NPCs roam the Military Ward collecting various materials for the war. Bandages, herbs, cooking items and metal bars are all being collected, with serverwide quotas for each (the Alliance, for example, collectively needs to turn in 90,000 copper bars). Players recieve small rewards for turn-ins as well as a small commendation, and a Horde NPC resides in the Military Ward to keep players apprised of how close the opposite faction is to meeting their quotas. Assumedly, once all the war effort quotas are met, the world event to open the gates will be one step closer to happening.

New Content On The Way For Dofus

Independent French game developer Ankama Studio has announced some upcoming content for their popular flash based MMORPG Dofus. Additions will include new monsters and items, refinements to the player vs player system, and a variety of changes to balance character classes.

The actual system of PVP will be heavily modified. It will give new goals, and will allow neutral players a bit more peace and quiet. These changes will cause an improvement of the territory conquest system, offer new challenges that can be repeated and that will attract every level of player.
The mid level player will not be excluded from this system and will have a great role to play.
In Fact, we will encourage and reward the PVP individually and also globally in order that every player can find a place in this system.
Alignment quests will be coded in the quest book and several new quests for each alignment will be made available.
Scroll quests will be modified. They will not be more difficult, although those that are too hard will be made a little easier. The principle will remain the same, though you may need to hunt a greater variety of monster in order to collect the scrolls.
The goal isn't to make the scroll quests harder, but to give you a challenge that is based on more than the time you are ready to spend fighting the same monster.

RoN: Rise of Legends Preview

Gamecloud today posted a preview of the upcoming Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends, an all new fantasy RTS game, not a sequel to the original Rise of Nations as some believed. In this preview, Gamecloud had to the opportunity to play with the single player in an early build of the game and were impressed by the military units and graphics.
Rise of Legends's units are impressive based on what we have played in the preview build, from the typical infantry units to massive battle units such as the Vinci's units who have things like a 19th century version of a battle mech to the Alim's fire birds. You also have special hero units for each side that add special bonuses. The research tree is there as well but this time Big Huge Games is making players make some choices as not all your upgrades will be available. Finally there are the special Dominance powers that the player can access if they achieve certain goals. For example, the military dominance power kicks in to the player who first gets four footsoldiers which then allows them to actually add enemies footsoldiers to your side.Though Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends has not been confirmed for Mac, the first Rise of Nations was ported succesfully by MacSoft.
