Call of Duty 2 Coming Soon?

A few astute IMG readers have let us know of an interesting piece of advertising they saw in the latest issue of Macworld Magazine, which subscribers began to receive last week. At the bottom of an ad for Call of Duty: Deluxe Edition, a small advertisement for Call of Duty 2 boasts that the game will be, "Coming Soon". This all but confirms that the first-person shooter will be coming to the Mac.

Expect an official announcement from Aspyr Media in the coming days. In the meantime, you can check the advertisement by clicking on the link below.

Sudoku Updated to 1.1

HexCat's shareware title Sudoku Adept has recently been bumped up to version 1.1. A grid-based puzzle title, Sudoku challenges players to cover a board so that every row, column, and 3x3 block contains the numbers 1-9. The latest version allows for the creation of custom user puzzles.

For those interested in the mechanics, or for those having trouble, Robert Woodhead offers Sudoku Susser. This utility provides hints and solves Sudoku puzzles in a variety of fashions, including step-by-step solutions and various highlighting methods.

The Sudoku Susser makes it easy to make your selections as you solve the puzzle; just click on one of them and select the new number from the popup menu that appears, or mouse over it and press the number on the keyboard. But it does far more than that!
Both of these apps can be downloaded from MacGameFiles. Sudoku Adept carries a small shareware fee, while Sudoku Susser can be used free of charge.

Civilization IV Developer Chat

Xfire recently posted the transcript of a chat with four developers of Firaxis' well received turn based strategy title Civilization IV. Senior Producer Barry Caudill, Lead Designer Soren Johnson, Lead Artist Steve Ogden, and Lead Programmer Mustafa Thamer answered a variety of questions about the Civ IV and gaming in general.

Question: uatgprogrammer: How much of interaction between the different sides (art, programming, design) was there to get this game finished?

[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: LOTS. Our offices are right next to each other, and we're all into IM, email, shouting at each other across the hall... whatever it takes

[Civ IV] Barry Caudill: Communication is the single biggest potential bottleneck when working with a large team.  It's my job to make sure people talk to each other.

[Civ IV] Mustafa Thamer: There is always alot of interaction to bring a cohesive vision to fruition.  Both art and programming was getting input from design and programming and art were talking constantly to get the look and performance we wanted.

First Glimpse Of America's Army Sequel

CNN has offered some insight into the upcoming sequel to the squad based first person shooter, America's Army. Titled America's Army: Real Heroes, the sequel will feature characters modeled after real life soldiers. A series of action figures based on these men and women will also be released.

From CNN:

Wolford, as a member of the Fort Bragg-based 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, received a Silver Star for a firefight in the southern Iraqi town of Samawah. According to the award citation, Wolford put himself in harm's way to help the wounded, redistributing weapons and equipment and coordinating fire for the machine guns.

"I didn't think my actions stood out above anyone else," he said.

Game developers may incorporate a mission that mirrors Wolford's experience, but no decisions have been made on how the characters would be incorporated.

Stubbs The Zombie Reviewed

Macworld's Game Room recently posted a review of the game devoted to everyone's favorite brain eater: Stubbs. Stubbs The Zombie in Rebel Without A Pulse follows the over the top gore filled antics of Stubbs as he seeks revenge and tasty gray matter. The Game Room gave the third person action game four out of five mice in part due to its impressive soundtrack.

From the review:

Stubbs gets points for style, however: Much of the game is cast in a grainy haze that gives it the look of a 1950’s driver’s ed film The effect might not appeal to everyone, but I liked it. Stubbs also has one of the best game soundtracks I’ve seen in years, thanks to covers of 1950’s pop tunes performed by today’s indie darlings such as Cake and The Dandy Warhols.

Myst V Explored

2404 is on of the latest to examine the final chapter in the Myst saga. Myst V: End of Ages brings Cyan Worlds' tale to a close with the style of the original and the addition of a true 3D environment to explore. The melding of old and new scored 9.2 out of 10 from 2404.

As I stated earlier, I have always been in a state of awe when visiting the worlds of Myst. If for some reason I were to live in another world that had to be designed by humans, I wouldn’t have a problem if Cyan created it. The graphics in End of Ages are no different from the rest of the series. Each age is truly beautiful with the exception of Laki’ahn, which seemed rather plain compared to the others. The age that impressed me the most was Todelmer, which places you on a different planet used by the D’ni people for studying the heavens. When you first link into the age you find yourself on a plateau-like structure facing a massive ringed planet on backdrop of the night sky, complete with shooting stars and a galaxy that resembles the “Milky Way.” The water in multiple ages, the floating clouds in Noloben, and the snow in Tahgira were other things that really added to the realism of the game and looked stunning.  You’ll also find some other creatures besides the Bahro in the game – birds, large fish creatures in the distance of Laki’ahn, and an annoying chicken-like creature on Laki’ahn which just runs around, lightening bugs similar to the those that were seen in Uru, and butterflies; all the creatures were well done and added to the realism of the game.

Civ III: Complete at FC, Quake 4 in Alpha

Aspyr Media has updated Civilization III: Complete to the Final Candidate stage. Developed by Firaxis Games with input from Sid Meier himself, Civilization III: Complete includes the original Civilization III plus two new expansion packs and delivers Mac-to-Mac online multiplayer for the first time.

In related news, over the holiday Aspyr's game status page also updated QUAKE 4 to Alpha stage. Developed by Raven Software in collaboration with id Software, QUAKE 4 continues the story where Quake II left off and blends elements of the game's predecessors including Quake III: Arena multiplayer.

Civilization III: Complete is scheduled to ship this month, while QUAKE 4 is scheduled to be released later this year.
