Red Orchestra 3.3 Released
9:22 AM | Blake Buck | 1 comment
Recently Macologist released the popular Unreal Tournament 2004 mod Red Orchestra 3.3 for the Mac. Red Orchestra is a World War II total conversion that puts player's in some of biggest battles of the eastern front. This release includes the following features:
- A unique player momentum system, giving an ever-more lifelike feel to movement within the game. The player doesn't just stop and start instantly, but takes a moment to get moving, or to stop.
- An item that has long been on the request list: different speeds depending on the direction of movement. The player now slows when strafing or moving backwards, for added realism.
- Improved AI for the bots operating vehicles: the driver will stop and go when ordered - and you can order the bots out of the vehicle if you want it all to yourself!
- One beautiful new map, never seen before: Baksan Valley - go try it out!
- With full access to the UT engine, we have been able to throw in some major rendering optimizations. This is showing an improvement of up to 40% in frame-rates on lower-end CPUs. Additionally, a number of the maps have been further optimized for improved performance.
- Vehicle movement has been improved: the brakes on tanks now hold the tank from rolling down shallow hills - and they won't "spin" so easily!

The votes have been tallied and the Walk Of Game 2006 winners have been revealed. Sid Meier and John Carmack have been chosen to receive steel stars on the Walk of Game near the Metreon in San Francisco. Meier is perhaps best known for creating the legendary Civilization series and Carmack is the co-founder of id Software and creator of graphics engines for games such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake. Both men are responsible for some of the most successful franchises in gaming history.
In addition to the two lifetime achievement awards, games and game characters received honors as well. Starcraft, Blizzard's ever popular sci-fi RTS title, will receive a star along the Walk, as will the game character Lara Croft.
Sid Meier (Partner and Director of Creative Development, Firaxis Games) began his legendary career in game making in the early 1980s, as a founding partner at one of the industry's first successful game companies: Microprose Software. Recognized around the world as the "Father of Computer Gaming", Sid and his games have been honored with virtually every major award in the gaming industry. In 1999, Sid was the second person ever to be inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Science's "Hall of Fame", and in 2002, he was honored with an induction into the Computer Museum of America's Hall of Fame. Sid put computer gaming on the map with such hallmark games as Civilization, Railroad Tycoon® and Pirates®, all of which are still revered as the greatest games ever made.To read more about the winners of the Walk of Game award check out the following link.

Another week, another new Rise of Legends screenshot. Monday, Big Huge Games released a new screenshot of their latest game, Rise of Legends. Rise of Legends is the sequel to the popular real-time strategy game Rise of Nations, which was released for the Mac late last year by Macsoft. Rise of Legends takes a more fantasy-oriented approach and adds full 3D graphics. This week shows off some exquisite environmental details.
While Rise of Legends has not been announced on the Mac, the popularity of the Rise of Nations series and the strong relationship between Macsoft and Big Huge games makes a future Mac release a definite possibility.
