Feral To Publish Black & White 2

Feral Interactive today announced that it will be bringing Lionhead's latest game, Black & White 2, to the Mac. From the creative minds of developers Peter Molyneux and Ron Miller, Black & White 2 is the sequel to the hugely successful Black & White. In this game that mixes up strategy and sim genres, you reprise your role as a young god in search of followers and return to the once innocent world of Eden. This land, however, has changed. The inhabitants have lost their innocence and developed new technology and weapons.

Feral's press release does not give a potential release date but a company representative said the game will likely be out in the first half of 2006. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.

iGame Radio Show Tonite

On tonight's broadcast of iGame Radio, the original Mac game radio program, host Omaha Sternberg chats with Jon Jacobs of MindArk and David Fleck, VP of Linden Labs, about alternative in-game economics.

Both Project Entropia and Second Life have a different kind of in-game economic model and revenue model than your typical MMOG. MindArk, the company developing and managing Project Entropia, envisioned a MMOG based around item damage, decay, and repair. Items must be repaired to continue to exist, and rather than players paying for the privilege of playing the game, they pay for the privilege of, among other things, the developers maintaining their stuff.

Though Linden Lab, the developer of Second Life, launched the game with a typical MMOG membership plan, they quickly realized this was unworkable within the confines of the game. Modifications since have included a two-tiered membership plan, based on the extent of interest a player has in the game, and monthly land use fees based on the amount of land a player owns. Both games also allow currency exchange between the virtual currency within the games and the US dollar, which has resulted in land auctions, marketplaces, and even stock markets.

Omaha will also offer Mac gaming news, reviews, commentary, and giveaways, and together with her guests will take questions live from listeners in the iGame Radio chat room (AIM/iChat room name "iGameRadio").

iGame Radio can be heard live on MacRadio from 6 to 7:30 pm Pacific Time, 9 to 10:30 pm Eastern (Tuesday from 0100 to 0230 UTC), and on demand thereafter. Listeners can tune in at the iGame Radio web page, where they'll also find archives of past broadcasts. QuickTime 5 or above and a 28 kbps or faster Internet connection are required for the live broadcast; QuickTime 5 and above or iTunes 4.9 or other MP3 enabled software (such as iPodderX), and a 28 kbps or faster Internet connection are required for access to the archives.

IMG Podcast Episode 2 Released

Today IMG released the second Episode of the Inside Mac Games Podcast, the official podcast of Mac gaming. Each week the IMG Podcast will be covering all the news in Mac gaming in one tight package. This week's show features Blake Buck, a writer for IMG, Justin Ficarrotta, author of Kill Monty, William Miller, an artist for Freeverse Software, and Tuncer Deniz, founder of Inside Mac Games.

On the show this week, the IMG podcast guys talk about America's Army 2.5 for Mac, TeamSpeek Beta Released, Aspyr Bringing Games to Intel Macs, OMG Cup Announced, Quad G5 and New Powerbook Released. The show weighs in just under 15 minutes in length, and 17 megabytes large.

Postal Goes Hollywood

Running with Scissors, the creators of the controversial Postal series of video games, has signed a deal with renegade filmmaker Uwe Boll to bring Postal to the big screen.

Here's more from the press release

"Uwe Boll is the perfect producer-director to make POSTAL," affirmed Running With Scissors' CEO Vince Desi. "He understands the subject matter and has an appreciation and affinity for controversy and political incorrectness. POSTAL has always been about reason and insanity, violence and motivation; producer-director Uwe Boll is simply the right guy to bring that vision to the screen."

The man behind the camera, Hollywood outsider Uwe Boll ranks POSTAL as his personal, all-time favorite video game. "I see it like a mirror for our society -- funny, violent, absurd!" he declared. "So then the movie must be powerful, strange, and so full of the game's political incorrect outrageousness that if we do it correct, we will all probably end up in jail!"

Boll has already produced and directed a series of films inspired by videogames, including "Alone in the Dark", "House of the Dead", and the upcoming "Bloodrayne." Boll is currently on-location in Canada shooting the cinematic version of "Dungeon Siege."

The POSTAL saga extends back to 1997 when the original game was singled out by Sen. Joe Lieberman as the poster child for mindless violence in video games. This, in turn, led to it subsequently being blacklisted at retail outlets across America. Taking a no-holes barred approach the relentless crew at Running With Scissors has built the POSTAL series into a thriving licensing vehicle, from thongs and baby tees to coffee mugs and posters, while selling over a million units worldwide on PC.

In the decade since its original release, the POSTAL series has become a cult classic in America and a major success overseas in countries such as Japan and Russia. It was then followed by the even more successful sequel, POSTAL 2, as well as numerous add-on disks, including the multi-player Share the Pain and the recent Apocalypse Weekend.

POSTAL is scheduled to begin shooting in 2006 for a 2007 release, which will coincide with the 10th anniversary of the original game's debut. "Running With Scissors will be creatively involved in this film," Desi vowed, "from casting to the script."

The Doom-ed Movie?

Although receiving varied critiques, the Doom movie opened up at number one in North American movie theatres this past weekend. The game to film adaptation earned $15.4 million, still short of the movie industry jumping out of its chair to a profit. According to the film's distributors, nearly 69 percent of the viewers had played the Doom video games, meaning there was little interest to watch the film outside of the gaming world. This statistic could alter the way current game to film adaptations are directed such as the Halo and Dungeon Siege movies to garner more interest, in addition to make more profit.

Battleground Europe Previewed

Eurogamer recently released a preview of Cornered Rat Software's upcoming World War II Era MMORPG, Battleground Europe. The game will feature over 350,000 square miles of terrain, over 100 weapons and vehicles, and the promise of regular new content updates.

From the preview:

Though graphically the game leaves a lot to be desired, in the audio department it excels. Every weapon and vehicle has a distinctive sound to it. You can hear the rumble of tank tracks long before you see the tank appear. The positional sound means that you can ascertain the general direction of enemy fire, or incoming aircraft quickly and easily. Additionally, many players seem to be able to recognise the sounds of different units, and often you’ll see reports in the chat tab warning of possible enemy units heard coming from a particular direction. This is especially useful at night when visibility drops to literally zero.

Recruit A Friend Into World Of Warcraft

In a move to add even more players to the most popular MMORPG in the world, Blizzard is offering 10 day guest pass keys to registered users of World of Warcraft. The keys are intended for recruiting new players, and any user whose friend becomes a registered subscriber will receive a free 30 day credit to their WoW account.

Subscribers should be receiving emails with guest codes over the next few days.

Rise of Legends Units Details

IGN recently posted an article about the new units in Big Huge Games latest creation, Rise of Legends. Rise of Legends is the sequel to the popular real-time strategy game Rise of Nations, this time with a strong fantasy theme and full 3D graphics. From the IGN article:

The Steam Fortress is a military production facility (similar to the Aerodrome) that represents the pinnacle of standard military factories in the Vinci empire. While a given Steam Fortress may be dwarfed by the famous Bunker Fort, there is only one of those, while at last count there were 43 fully functional Steam Fortresses among the various Vinci city-states. Each Steam Fortress is made as self-sufficient as possible, and contains supplies, armaments, armor, a staff of scouts and garrison soldiers, and mechanics and parts capable of creating any number of cannon and Juggernauts; there are even just enough parts and equipment to create one of the awesome Land Leviathans, should the need arise.
While Rise of Legends hasn't been announced for the Mac, Macsoft released the original Rise of Nations for the Mac back in 2003.

BBS Doc creator takes on Text Adventures

Gaming site Gamasutra has a quick blurb stating that Jason Scott, director of the recent indie documentary BBS: The Documentary, has announced he is working on a new documentary. Titled Get Lamp, the new documentary will delve into the 30 year history of the text adventure game.

Filming and interviews are expected to begin in 2006, and Scott has set up a mailing list for interested viewers to be contacted when the film is complete. "The history of this interesting genre of game and entertainment is now over 30 years," says Scott in the project FAQ, "and I think the time has come to tell its story."
