Fable: The Lost Chapters Developer Diary
9:32 AM | Blake Buck | 1 comment
IGN recently posted a new Developer Diary for Fable: The Lost Chapters. Fable is an action-based sandbox style roleplaying game developed by Lionhead Studios, the developer behind the popular God simulation game, Black and White. The diary gives some insight into the game's creation, specifically designing bosses. From the IGN article:
Boss encounters are - by definition - hard. Developing them can be even harder. While Fable's bosses were quite fun to fight, none really elicited that "I have to fight *that*?!!!" reaction perfect for the final stages of a game. When we started The Lost Chapters we knew that we *had* to provide what we call the "Sweet Lemony Jesus!" moment this time, or consider ourselves utter failures, creatures so lacking in merit that being forced to endure a 24hr marathon of 'America's Funniest Home Videos' would be considered a fate too good for us.Fable: The Lost Chapters is currently slated for a September 20th PC release, and Feral Interactive has been licensed to create the Mac version to be released soon after. IMG will have more coverage of Fable: The Lost Chapters as it nears its PC release.
We need to prepare a background brief, create the mesh, rig it, create the environment simultaneously, get the scripting and AI working for it, create and polish the effects, rinse and repeat until it's suitably awesome, then wrap it in appropriate cinematics. As I said - hard.

9:34 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story
As part of preparing the upcoming 1.7 patch for World of Warcraft, Blizzard has opened Public Test Realms and is encouraging players to participate in the testing. Including a new raid dungeon, battleground and a host of other features, the new patch will no doubt keep testers busy.
Players can participate in the test realms by creating a character or by copying their characters from existing realms to the test realms. Those who have previously copied their characters to the test realms will need to do so again, as all previous characters have been removed from the previous test realms. To copy your character and to download the test client, visit our Test Realm Character Copy page. Only players who created their accounts before August 2 will be able to login to the public test realms. Also, players will not be able to log in to the public test realms if they have changed their password since August 16. For more information about the upcoming patch and the Test Realm, follow the links below.

Please be aware that the test realms are there to allow us to test major content patches before the patch goes public. Therefore, some changes may be introduced to the public test realms before a patch goes live, and some changes may be introduced to the patch after the test realms have closed. To read more about the test realms, please review the Test Realm FAQ. We truly appreciate our players taking the time to help us test the latest changes to the game; thank you all!

Playing Dress Up With Your WoW Character
9:34 AM | Cord Kruse | 2 comments
Tired of buying an item for the stats and finding out the color scheme clashes with the rest of your equipment? In the upcoming patch for World of Warcraft Blizzard will offer a new Dressing Room feature. Characters will be able to check out exactly how an item will look with their character before they buy.
How many times have you been to the auction house, checking for better equipment, trying to decide between +7 Stamina/+6 Agility wrist armor and +6 Stamina/+7 Agility wrist armor only to find out that those new blue bracers just don't quite go with your orange gloves, after you've won the auction?Useful for more than just checking out items before you buy, the new Dressing Room feature will also allow players to preview the results of recipes and to examine looted items before dividing them up with other party members. For complete information about the new feature click the link below.
WoW: Dressing Room
Of course it's arguable that the game is all about stats and not looks. But what about the pleasure of catching everyone's eyes with your slick, and useful, new outfit?
Surely, even the most hardcore PvP players should be mindful of their appearance. What's the point of being the best in your realm if you look like the average Joe? Be creative! Look for items with more than just stats! With a distinctive look, people will remember you better! After all, "There goes that vile Shaman" is so much more memorable when you add, "with the blood-red gloves"!
With the exciting new Dressing Room feature in the upcoming patch, you'll no longer have an excuse for not competing as much with your looks as with your stats!

Stubbs The Zombie Interview
9:33 AM | Anthony Wang | 3 comments
Computer & Video Games has posted an interview with Matt Soell on the upcoming action game, Stubbs The Zombie. The interview is centered around the development of the game including story, ideas, and much more. Stubbs The Zombie is scheduled to stumble into stores this coming fall.
What's the premise behind Stubbs the Zombie, and could you tell us a little more about the storyline? To read the full article or to learn more information, follow the links below.
Computer & Video Games: Interview
Soell: In the 1930s, Stubbs was a salesman trying to eke out a living during the lowest ebb of the Great Depression. Then someone murdered him and dumped him in a shallow grave in the Pennsylvania countryside, where he spent the next twenty-odd years. Now it's 1959 and Stubbs is back - hungry for truth, justice, and fresh human brains. Oh, and eternal love.
While he was away, so to speak, a billionaire named Andrew Monday built a city on top of his grave. Not just any city, but a futuristic metropolis - as futuristic as it gets in 1959 anyway.
So you have a rich man who's just built the perfect city, and a dead man who's tired of being pushed around. The dead man wakes up in the middle of the city. Then things get weird.

Unreal Engine 4 in the Works
9:33 AM | Blake Buck | 1 comment
Computer and Video Games recently posted an article in which Epic Games announced the Unreal Engine 4. Previously unheard of, the Unreal Engine 4 is an advanced graphical game engine that will power the games of the future. This announcement comes as a suprise, as Epic Games has just now begun to license the Unreal Engine 3 to publishers such as Microsoft and Sony for their next-generation platforms. From the Computer and Video Games article:
Unreal Engine 4? Our minds veritably boggle at the prospect. God alone knows what Epic are cooking up there, but if it's the generational leap forward that Unreal Engine 3 is, then world look out. Rein hinted that it's designed for the next next generation of hardware. Epic feels they got a two to three year headstart on this generation when they started Unreal Engine 3 and aimed it for hardware that was only in the planning stages at the time. Their gamble paid off when Microsoft and Sony chose that level of hardware to power their upcoming next-gen consoles. Rein says the focus for Unreal Engine 4 is getting a leg up on the competition for the next major paradigm shift in computing hardware that is likely to see the light in future PCs and console systems that are mere concepts today. While still many years off, the Unreal Engine 4 could play an important role in the future of the gaming industry. IMG will have more information on this story as it develops.
Computer and Video Games Website - Unreal Engine Four Article
So why tantalize us with the possibilities of Unreal Engine 4 when Unreal Engine 3 still has years of development and progress remaining? Talent. It's all about attracting talent to come and work at Epic Games. Rein says he's issuing a plea to developers everywhere to consider joining the team at Epic to help shape that future. Epic are currently on a recruitment drive for both US and international developer signings and he issued the following cheeky challenge: "We're really looking to hire the best in the industry. Nobody should imagine they're paid too well now or that they're too entry level to apply. We want to talk to anyone who has the potential to be at the top of industry. We're looking for talent. Top talent."
