8:32 AM | Tuncer Deniz | 5 comments

Aspyr Media today announced that they have begun shipping to retailers the Mac version of Electronic Arts’ popular golf game, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2005. The title was developed for the Mac by Aspyr Studios, Aspyr’s internal development team, under license from EA.

Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2005 challenges you to take on the man who has changed golf forever – Tiger Woods. After making a name for yourself on the Tour, tee off against legends including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan to see how you stack up against the all-time greats.

The revolutionary new Tiger Proofing course alteration technology allows you to modify course dynamics and call out your PGA TOUR rivals by adding lengthier Tiger Tees, tighter fairways, dramatic undulations to greens, deeper bunkers, higher rough, and more. An enhanced Game Face featuring non-proportional bone scaling and texture blending creates incredibly realistic looks, right down to the bags under your eyes.

Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2005 is rated “E” for “Everyone” by the ESRB and is available for pre-order from Macgamestore.com for $39.95. It should be shipping later this week.

Age of Darkness is a fantasy based game which will include a revolutionary death system, advanced computer AI and dynamic quest generation as well as player run cities. Ashbrook Prime has a sci fi focus and will feature first person shooter style gameplay, a variety of vehicles and an in-depth crafting system.

"We believe these games will cause quite a stir in the MMORPG community; we're taking chances that the big-guns won't even consider for fear of alienating their audience."

Despite the wishful thinking of many Starcraft and Diablo fans Blizzard's next title, to be announced at the upcoming BlizzCon event in October, will not be connected to either of those popular franchises. In a recent discussion with CNN's Chris Morris, Blizzard PR Coordinator George Wang revealed the announced title would be linked to World of Warcraft and that Blizzard would be showing it off at the event.

Fans of WoW will no doubt be eager to see what Blizzard has up its sleeve. Keep your eye on IMG for more details as they emerge. To read the entire CNN commentary click on the link below.

Gamespot Explores Age Of Empires III, Reveals Screenshots
8:37 AM | Cord Kruse | 8 comments

Gamespot recently posted a preview of Age of Empires III, Microsoft and Ensemble Studios' latest real time strategy title in the franchise. Spanning over 200 years of history, AoE III moves the timeline up to the colonial era when European nations fought to explore and control the New World. The preview focuses on a variety of changes to the game including the major addition of a home city.

Basically, the home city is the capital of your European empire, and from there you essentially "launch" colonization missions to the New World. However, the home city is much more than that. When you begin a game, you'll find yourself in the familiar position of starting with a handful of settlers and a town center. From there, you have to start gathering resources (wood, food, and gold), begin to explore the map, and construct the many new buildings that you'll need to expand your colony. As you do these things, you'll gain experience points, which accumulate in a circular meter at the bottom of the screen. The more "heroic" the act that you perform, such as having your hero unit defeat a treasure guardian and claim the treasure, the more experience you're awarded. (Oh, yeah, more on the hero a bit later.) When you get enough experience to gain a level, you can click on the meter and it switches you back to the home city. From there, you can select a reward that the home city sends to you for doing such a great job in the New World. These rewards can range from supplies to more settlers, technology, or military units. Then just click on the circular meter again, and you'll switch back to your colony; a little bit later, your reward will arrive on screen, straight from the home city.

Yes, it seems a bit complicated at first, but in no time we figured out the home city feature and were using it in different ways. Early on, it's invaluable to use the home city to send extra resources or settlers that can get your economy going, quickly. But by the middle and late stages of a game, we stockpiled our home city points for when we needed them. So, if we got into a struggle with a rival European power's colony, we simply ordered up a slew of musketeers and hussars (cavalry) to reinforce our forces in a hurry. You can even requisition outposts (which serve like the towers in Age of Empires II), as well as a fort that can be built anywhere you want.

The preview also takes a look at the combat engine and the cutting edge graphics which will require the latest video cards. The PC version of AoE III is scheduled to ship this fall. Although no Mac version has been announced as of yet, the first two Age of Empires made their way to the platform so there is reason for hope.

IGN Posts Quake IV Article
8:34 AM | Franklin Pride | 1 comment

IGN.com has posted an article on Quake IV, the upcoming new game in the Quake series. The article covers a few of the maps in the full game and all of the weapons that are available for use.

Quake has also been defined by its Rail Guns and Lightning Guns. Happily, they've been maintained here and should seem familiar to most players. The Rail Gun fires a deadly blast but has a very high rate of fire. The Lightning Gun is a bit different. The bolt it fires doesn't do as much damage but it works like a hose so you can use it to deal constant damage to your enemies -- assuming you can keep the beam focused on them.
While a Mac version of Quake IV has not yet been announced, it is highly likely that it will be released for the Macintosh.

Next Generation Interviews Glenda Adams
8:33 AM | Anthony Wang | Comment on this story

Next Generation has posted an interview with Glenda Adams, using the company she works for, Aspyr as an example to how other companies share the same challenges and opportunities of operating in the Macintosh gaming market. The article focuses on game selection from PC to Mac, another look at the impacts of the Intel switch, the Mac market environment, development obstacles, and marketing strategies. With the influx of Macintosh influence over the past few years and the hype over the switch to Intel, the Mac gaming market will hopefully flourish.

Here is an excerpt from the article:

"There are probably around 30-40 Mac games released a year, compared to the hundreds for the PC," explains Adams. "Other than small developers who could move simpler games to the Mac themselves, the biggest opportunity in the Mac market is for AAA games publishers from the PC to work with an existing Mac developer/publisher like Aspyr to try to get their game on the platform as close to the PC release as possible. Obviously catching the same marketing and PR buzz from the PC can help a Mac game's sales."
