Myst V Q&A and New Screenshots

3DGamers.com has released several new screenshots of the upcoming Myst V: End Of Ages. In addition, Worthplaying.com has posted a short Q&A with Myst's Art and Visual Design Director Josh Staub.

What influenced your decision of bringing real-time 3D into the Myst series?

Perhaps the trademark of the Myst series is its immersive quality, achieved through the exploration of fantastic (but believable) worlds. Until now, navigation through these worlds was constrained to still images (sometimes projected onto "virtual bubbles") with dynamic elements overlayed to give the illusion of movement and life. By using real-time 3D, Myst V raises the bar dramatically by bringing the first truly dynamic 3D environments to the Myst series and provides the most immersive experience yet.

Myst V is scheduled for release sometime in September. A Mac version of the collector's edition will be available in limited quantities and can be preordered at Macgamestore.com. For the screenshots and Q&A click on the links below.

IMG Reviews DeepTrouble 2

IMG has posted a review of DeepTrouble 2, the sequel to CodeBlender Software's under water action game. Here's a clip from the review:

As I previously mentioned, Deep Trouble 2's physics engine mirrors an atmospheric flight sim, but the setting is underwater. Your ship maneuvers with delightful fluidity; acceleration and cornering are smooth and enjoyable, and using the built-in boost is a lot of fun (and essential for your survival). It feels nothing like piloting a real submarine, but the dynamics help make the game more exciting than a realistic submarine simulator could be. Interestingly, this game clearly takes a page from Halo's book: your ship's shields, when damaged, recharge after a short period of time. Also, you are only allowed to carry two primary weapons, which you can swap out for others as you come across new weapons. The problem is that this system (which made Halo's gameplay spectacular) doesn't necessarily translate to other genres very well.

iGame Radio Talks To Listeners

On tonight's broadcast of iGame Radio, the Mac gaming radio program, host Omaha Sternberg talks with you, the listener, about what's important to you regarding the iGame Radio show, Mac games, and the games industry in general. Also, reviews of three indie games you may not have heard about.

Want to know whether iGame Radio is going to podcast? What is really underneath all of that blurring in The Sims 2? Will Battlefront 2 come out for the Mac? Ask your questions and Omaha will attempt to answer them on this free-for-all question and answer session of the radio show. And what answers she can't provide may be provided by listeners in the chat room as well. Listeners can ask their questions live in the iGame Radio chat room (AIM/iChat room name "iGameRadio"), email them to Omaha, or post them in the forums of InsideMacGames.com or MacGamer.com. Omaha will also offer Mac gaming news and commentary.

There are a lot of small, independent developers out there that regularly develop and publish their games, but don't get a lot of press about it. Tonight Omaha looks at three of these developers and gives a review of the most recent games they have each published.

iGame Radio can be heard live on MacRadio from 6 to 7:30 pm Pacific Time, 9 to 10:30 pm Eastern (Tuesday from 0200 to 0330 UTC), and on demand thereafter. Listeners can tune in at iGame Radio web page, where they'll also find archives of past broadcasts. QuickTime 5 or 6 and a 28 kbps or faster Internet connection are required.

World Of Warcraft Interactive Map Available

Now players can plan their flight path route for upcoming expeditions, making sure to note the recommended character levels and points of interest as detailed on the new map. New Warcraft III Bonus Map Ready For Download

Blizzard has released yet another bonus map for their popular real time strategy game, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. Titled "Terenas Stand," the new map is designed for two players to test each other's mettle.

KTA Tennis 1.1 Update Released

KB Productions has released an update for KTA Tennis. Version 1.1 improves the overall appearance of the game as well as adds new graphical content and improved computer player AI. Inspired by the Super Nintendo game, Super Tennis, KTA is an arcade tennis game allowing one or two players to trade volleys.

Here is a complete list of the updates in 1.1:

- greatly improved game fluidity, smoothness
- new court graphics
- improved computer player: the pro will hunt the out of bounds lines a lot more

Games For Health Conference

The Games for Health Project has announced details for its second annual Games for Health Conference. Bringing together game developers, health care professionals, researchers and consultants, the conference is intended to explore how video and computer games are leading to breakthroughs in health and health care.

"Last year we showed the world there is exciting work being down to apply the motivational, educational, and graphical power of videogames to improving public health," said Ben Sawyer co-director of the Games for Health Project. "This meeting gives us the opportunity to look at how far things have come in only a year. Some of the next-generation projects will be exciting in terms of their potential to change how patients and healthcare professionals practice healthcare."
The conference will be held September 22-23 at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in downtown Baltimore. For more information check out Games for Health site below.

Gamespot Posts Bone Preview

Gamespot has posted a preview of Telltale's upcoming adventure game Bone. In the grand tradition of such point and click adventure titles as the Monkey Island series, Grim Fandango and Full Throttle, Bone allows players to take part in the computerized version of Jeff Smith's comic franchise of the same name.

In pure mechanical terms, Bone will tread familiar territory for adventure game aficionados with its context-sensitive point-and-click interface. Click an area on the ground, and the currently controllable character will walk to it. Hover the cursor over and click on an object you can look at or interact with, and your character will perform the appropriate interaction. The game gives you an inventory in which to gather objects, but Telltale stresses that Bone won't rely on contrived inventory puzzles requiring you to combine obscure objects with one another. Instead, you'll be tasked with overcoming obstacles using the items and abilities on hand in a given situation, which will presumably make you think creatively about the game's puzzles rather than turning to the nearest FAQ for the solution.

Quake 3 Source Code To Be Released

During the keynote at this year's QuakeCon, John Carmack announced that id Software will be releasing the Quake III Arena source code soon. The only other information he gave was that the source code will not have any Punkbuster components included.

This follows in the tradition of previous two Quake titles, which the company made the source code available for download at id Software's website.

Stubbs The Zombie At Quakecon

Gamecloud has posted a critique of the Stubbs the Zombie playable build made available at the recent Quakecon event. Wideload Games' creation includes innovative third person action allowing players to use the zombie's body as a weapon. It may well draw in players looking for a new twist on the action game genre.

The PC build of the game was created by Aspyr (they will also develop the Macintosh version while Wideload concentrates on the Xbox version) and in our time with the game at QuakeCon we were impressed with Stubbs the Zombie's neat take on action games. The third person title doesn't allow your character to hold any weapons or items; his body is his weapon, litterally. In addition to attacking living human beings and eating their brains, Stubbs can also use things like his gut as a grenade or throw his head as a gas grenade. The most fun comes with throwing his arm. The arm can be controlled and moved to a human being who then is controlled by the zombie via the hard attaching to the human's head. You then control the human and if he or she is armed it can do a lot of damage before other humans take it out.

StarCraft Crash Bug Patched

Blizzard has updated its real-time strategy game, StarCraft to version 1.13b. This new version fixed a minor bug. The patch has been released for the Windows version, and a Mac version should follow shortly.

Ragdoll Masters Updated

Rag Doll Software has updated their 2D fighting game Ragdoll Masters to version 2.0.1. The update fixes a bug in 2 player mode, changes a few gameplay parameters and adds a reset options button. Masters is a unique martial arts combat game which makes use of ragdoll physics. There are no pre rendered moves, players instead use their keyboard to control the head of their fighter and the body moves in response to the motions.

Ragdoll Masters is a succesful experiment in the world of beat'em'ups, and in the use of ragdoll physics in 2D games. In this game you control a stylized martial arts master, making his way through stronger and stronger opponents with spectacular moves and impressive blows. Features some of the most sophisticated physics ever used in 2D games and other neat effects.
