Aspyr Announces RollerCoaster Tycoon 3
9:13 AM | Tuncer Deniz | 40 comments

Aspyr Media this morning announced that it will be bringing RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 to the Macintosh. The game, which is expected to be released in November 2005, is licensed by Atari and is being developed for the Mac by Aspyr Studios based on Frontier's original code.

For the first time on Mac: build, operate and experience the amusement park your dreams in RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, where you can actually ride the rides!

"We are thrilled to be working with Aspyr to bring Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 to Mac users. Mac gamers can now experience all the fun and excitement of creating and managing their own theme park, bringing the magical world of RCT3 to a whole new set of people.” David Braben, Chairman and Founder of Frontier Developments.

RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 is the first in the highly successful Rollercoaster Tycoon series to come to Mac. The game features stunning 3D graphics, and the all-new CoasterCam, which allows players to see their park from the eyes of a guest and ride all the rides. Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 also features amazing crowd scenes with enhanced park guests and characters, more than 170 rides including new-to-the-franchise roller coaster types, realistic day and night cycles with superb lighting effects, extensive still-picture and movie-making capability, and the new Fireworks MixMaster, which allows players to create pyrotechnic masterpieces and synchronize them to music.

IMG has posted a first-look preview of RollerCoaster Tycoon 3. Be sure to check it out to learn more about this title.

In related news, yesterday IMG and Aspyr sponsored a contest where you could guess the name of the game after watching a brief QuickTime movie. Out of the few hundred guesses, only 4 people guessed the name of the game correctly. Out of these four people, one was randomly picked the winner: Frank Schima of Boulder, Colorado. Frank will receive a free copy of the game when it ships.

Custer is Glorified
9:08 AM | IMG News | Comment on this story

Our pixel artist, Brad Custer, has crafted another gaming-themed desktop for you to enjoy, this time hot on the heels of our First Look of Imperial Glory from Feral Interactive. This title should hit the streets by the end of the year if all goes well, and now you have a desktop to celebrate its arrival.

Here's a snippet of what Brad had to say:

Last week we featured our first look at Imperial Glory from Feral Interactive and the buzz about the game hasn't stopped in my email. Obviously, a lot of you are looking forward to the game, which has led me to honor all your requests today. So, with the help of Pyro Studios and my trusty cable modem I was able to create this week's wallpaper.

China Considers Strict Gaming Regulations
9:05 AM | Cord Kruse | 4 comments

In what may be a case of one step forward and two steps back the Chinese government has decided to fund their fledgling game industry to the tune of $1.8 billion, while at the same time planning stricter regulations on gamers. GamesIndustry reported recently that China is considering preventing the use of any player versus player games by those under the age of eighteen. Older gamers could face restrictions on their game playing hours, with mandatory cut offs after a certain number of hours per day of use.

"Minors should not be allowed to play online games that have player killing content," according to the Ministry of Culture's Internet Culture boss Liu Shifa. "Online games that have PK content usually also contain acts of violence and leads to players spending too much time trying to increase the power of their characters. They are harmful to young people."
Considering the broad spectrum of games which fall under the PVP ban this could be a blow to many game franchises active in China including Blizzard's World of Warcraft. For the entire article follow the link below.

Hellgate: London Roundtable Chat Log Posted
9:05 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Hellgate Guru has posted a chat log of an August 4th discussion between fansite operators and Flagship Studios' Bill Roper and Bob Moseley. The free flowing discussion reveals a few tidbits about the multiplayer options in Hellgate: London and a variety of other things including trading, auctions, and the different styles of play gamers enjoy.

[Bill Roper] Unfortunately there will always be min/max players who find the fastest way to "just level" and for them, that is the fun in it. We are going to be working on a lot of things for players to do that is much more fun, and potentially more rewarding, than mere rushing.

[Bill Roper] Exploration is something that a certain type of player enjoys the most, and for those people, we’ll make sure they are rewarded. We are looking at doing things with our layouts that we haven’t done before, such as adding the rarity element into the dynamic level generation.

[Bill Roper] This means that players will be encouraged to explore all of an area because there may be something there – and by that we mean links to an additional area, or finding small gameplay elements that don’t appear every time. Hopefully having these types of things will allow people who enjoy exploration to get something special for their interest.

Applelinks Reviews The Commandos Battlepack
9:04 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Applelinks recently posted a review of the Commandos Battlepack, a Pyros Studios game brought to the Mac by Feral Interactive. The Battlepack, which includes both Commandos 2: Men of Courage and Commandos 3: Destination Berlin, received a 4 out of 5 rating.

Once I got the strategies down and mastered the keyboard shortcuts (and trust me, you'll need to learn the shortcuts in order to get the timing of this game right), I had a lot of fun with it. This is mainly because it's so unique. Managing just a few commandos at a time made for a fun diversion from other real-time strategy games that force you to manage entire squadrons or even whole armies. The planning is a little easier, that way, even if the execution is not. The Commandos games may even give you too much time to plan.

Workaround For Star Wars: BattleFront Multiplayer
9:04 AM | Anthony Wang | 9 comments

Aspyr has provided a temporary work around to hosting Star Wars: Battlefront on GameRanger. This will fix any instability in multiplayer games until Aspyr releases a patch. Star Wars: Battlefront features Mac to Mac play through GameRanger, Mac to PC Play on LAN or Direct IP only, however, you cannot join PC Gamespy servers.

Issue
I am not able to successfully host a multiplayer game using GameRanger.

Discussion
In order to host a game through GameRanger, use the following procedure:

1. Create a Star Wars Battlefront Room.

2. Press start and configure your Game with NO OTHER Game Ranger Users in your room.

3. After you press launch and the game is initialized people can then late join your game and play.
