World of Warcraft Update Targets Mac Fixes
8:52 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

World of Warcraft has received a minor patch, bringing the game to version 1.6.1 and providing Mac specific improvements. In addition to the Mac updates, the patch includes updates to the Warrior class and some modifications to Blackwing Lair and Maraudon.

This update is currently only for North American and Australian editions of the game. Here is the list of changes for Mac users:

Macs
- Increased the maximum number of sounds which can be played simultaneously. This will fix problems where some sounds could be dropped in very busy situations.
- Fixed WoW Error Reporter so that it doesn't crash under Mac OS X 10.4 when trying to send an error report.
- Worked around an issue where you would lose your Expose/Dashboard preferences if you crashed or asserted while in fullscreen mode on Mac OS X 10.4.
- Fixed the "blockWidth", "srec", and "bitnum < m_numBits" assertions bugs that would crash the game.
- Fixed a bug involving corpses near the player that could result in a crash ("BusError").
The complete list of changes provided by this patch can be found at the link below.

IMG has posted a review of the Z-5300e 5.1 speaker system from Logitech. Here's a clip from the review:

The Z-5300e is a 5.1 surround sound speaker system. It consists of five speakers (two front, two rear, and a center) and a subwoofer for omnidirectional bass tones. The speakers are of moderate size, standing eight inches tall on plain gray bases. The front and rear satellite pairs are tilted slightly upward and the wider center speaker is tilted dramatically downward for placement above one's computer monitor.

Preview of Fable: The Lost Chapters Posted
8:52 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Another preview has been released for the upcoming Lionhead Studios game, Fable: The Lost Chapters. This time 1UP.com takes a look at the stand alone expansion for the original XBox exclusive Fable. The preview discusses the hype surrounding the original game and the well implemented change from controller to keyboard and mouse control in F:TLC.

What we didn't expect was how well the controls have been adapted to the mouse and keyboard setup. There are quite a few buttons in use, but the layout is intuitive, and it quickly makes the Xbox controller feel lacking for buttons. Spellcasters will particularly appreciate being able to unleash spells from either mouse button, and quickly swapping these pairs with the mouse wheel. Numerical hot keys, like you'd use to change weapons in a first-person shooter, make it much easier to take advantage of the various expressions. Not that there aren't drawbacks -- the WASD movement isn't quite the equal of the analog sticks on a controller -- but the tradeoff seems to lean in the PC's favor.
The PC version of F:TLC is scheduled for release in November. The Mac version is on its way from the good folks at Feral Interactive. For the entire preview follow the link below.

Shivering Kittens, loopTHEloop Updated
8:52 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Sealfin has recently updated its falling block puzzles games Shivering Kittens and loopTHEloop to version 1.2. Shivering Kittens brings players to the aid of tiny kittens. By connecting the kittens in groups of five or more, players clear sections from the game screen and add more time to the clock. loopTHEloop tasks players with making loops from pipe sections which fall from the top of the screen. If a loop of sufficient size is created all the pipe on screen vanishes.

Here's the list of fixes and changes:

Shivering Kittens
• the game now saves your list of highscores – you are scored on the no. of kittens you rescue during a game, and the highscores list also saves the length of the best ‘chain’ of kittens you rescued during the game;
• the ‘how to play’ documentation distributed with the game has been improved;
• the demo of the game will now open the correct web-page when you quit the game.

loopTHEloop
• due to popular demand, the game now saves your list of highscores! You are scored on the no. of pieces of pipe you are able to remove by forming rings, and the highscores list also saves the best length of a ring you formed during the game.
The updates bring the additional features listed above but have temporarily rendered the games unplayable for users of Tiger. An update to fix this problem is currently in the works. If you're a fan of addictive puzzle games check out the links below and download the demos at Macgamefiles.com.
