Puppygames Releases Ultratron
9:29 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

U.K. based Puppygames has released Ultratron, a game that pays homage to the classic arcade game, Robotron. The game includes over 40 levels of bot-slaying mayhem against over 70 enemies in classic retro 2D. The game is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux.

In 1982 Robotron defeated an invasion force destined for world domination… or so we thought. Now humanity is extinct, but in our last dying days a new hero was born: Ultratron! Puppygames is thrilled to announce mankind’s final and finest hour with the release of Ultratron to avenge humanity’s defeat! Download it today for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Realizing that humans had come to rely on graphics rather than skill with their weapons, the retro invasion began. Our 3D technology was no match for the 2D invaders and all our greatest heroes were consumed in their terrible onslaught. It was only in the last days of humanity did we fight fire with fire and created a 2D hero of our own. Now Ultratron is out for vengeance, to save countless civilizations across the universe and end the tyranny of the Four Bots of the Apocalypse.A small 4 MB demo is available for download from Macgamefiles.com. The full shareware version costs $9.95 to register.

Macgamestore: Commandos Battle Pack In Stock
1:43 PM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

After a lengthy journey across the Pacific Ocean, Feral's Commandos Battle Pack is now in stock at Macgamestore.com. All pre-orders have been shipped out. The game is available for $39.95.

The Commandos Battle Pack brings together on the Mac the two most recent installments of Pyro's multi-million selling series. Commandos 2: Men of Courage and Commandos 3: Destination Berlin.

Both are squad-based action-strategy games set against the dramatic background of World War II. Commandos 2 takes place early in the war, when stemming the march of the Axis powers looks like a hopeless cause and Commandos 3 takes place later in the war, when the tide has begun to turn, but victory is still a distant and uncertain prospect.

Sawblade Releases Power Game Factory Demo
11:20 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

Sawblade Software has released a free demo of Power Game Factory, an innovative new game authoring tool for Mac OS X. Power Game Factory lets users produce graphically rich, action-packed side scrolling games, and no programming is required.

Here's more from the press release:

Harnessing old-school gameplay, hardware accelerated graphics, and realistic physics, Power Game Factory is the ideal system with which experienced artists and designers may construct sophisticated, compelling Macintosh games.

But Power Game Factory will likely seem even more exciting to those to whom computer game design was never before an option. As Sawblade Software founder Jesse Simko points out, "There are kids in every middle school who are creative enough to design games. Power Game Factory lets them put their ideas into motion, and it's simple enough so that they can finish the job. The focus is on implementing content; it's not about programming, scripting, and debugging."

Power Game Factory's content-driven approach to game design should appeal to anyone who aspires to release the next great Mac game. Luckily, completed game projects can be compiled into self-contained, fully functional applications which may be sold without royalties or limitations of any kind.

The Power Game Factory demo offers the same comprehensive feature set and intuitive interface found in the full version of Power Game Factory, but game projects designed with the demo are limited to a single level.

Available now for US$44.00, Power Game Factory ships on a CD bundled with the Greenland Invasion game project, a ridiculously entertaining mini-game that demonstrates the advanced capabilities of the software. An included 6-step beginner's tutorial will help users get started with their own game design projects, while an exhaustive 190 page user's manual provides a complete reference. Also included with Power Game Factory are collections of extra level background graphics and game music. In addition, customers will enjoy free Sawblade Software stickers and a Sawblade Software product order form offering discounts on merchandise.

A demo of Power Game Factory is available for download from Macgamefiles.com.

Civilization IV Q&A Posted
10:26 AM | Franklin Pride | Comment on this story

Strategyinformer.com has posted a question and answer session for Civilization IV. The Q&A covers the additions and the changes from Civilization III. Of particular note are the changes to the combat system. Certain units will gain experience and "level up" after seeing combat multiple times.

Si: Regarding attacks and defenses. Will attacks from an open field to forests or from one side of the river to another result in combat bonuses, penalties? I presume this is still the case but anyway has this been changed in any way in Civilization 4?

2k Games: There are defensive bonuses for certain types of as we have had previously. One interesting difference is that you don’t automatically get the fortify bonus the first turn. Instead, the unit needs to stay fortified to slowly build up its defenses.

Si: How will the city management work now? City boundaries work different in Civilization 4?

2k Games: Another failure state we have eliminated is the “people are revolting” problem. Instead, you will find that cities that are really mad will slow down or even stop production until you deal with the problem. Also, we are trying for a WYSIWYG approach with cities in which you will be able to see what is going on and what has been built from the main map view without having to open the city. People that like to micro-manage can still open the city and “get under the hood” a bit, but it won’t be necessary for more casual city builders.
