Macologist Reviews Star Wars Mods
9:11 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Macologist has posted a feature comparing several popular Star Wars themed mods for various titles. The mods in question include Warlords for Homeworld 2, a Battlefield 1942 mod titled Galactic Conquest, and Troopers, an Unreal Tournament 2004 mod.

The feature looka at each mod in detail, then proceeds to compare them to each other in terms of similarities and differences.

The general theme of Star Wars is all throughout all three of these mods. With the exception of Warlords, they do not place you in the position of a hero, such as Luke Skywalker, you do not have a light saber, and you are just as weak or as strong as any other person on the battlefield. In battles, people are always getting hurt. To have as many troops as possible in a battle, there always must be a way to heal you, or a teammate. In both mods (Galactic Conquest, and Troopers) There are healing stations spread around in different maps. A soldier does not want to run out of ammo either, so to fix that problem, Ammo Dispensers are also spread around maps.
Players looking for a little Star Wars fix can find the feature at Macologist. Download links for two of the mods are also being offered there.

Shadowbane Refuge Update
7:49 AM | Marcus Albers | Comment on this story

Shadowbane producer Frank "Kellion" Lucero posted a news item to the Shadowbane website apologizing for technical difficulties users experienced while a new Refuge server launch was attempted. Frank had this to say about the bringing the new Refuge server online, as well as plans for migrating the other servers:

Tomorrow morning we will be bringing Refuge down in conjunction with the daily restart.  This emergency maintenance cycle will incorporate fixes that will correct the issues with building management, and will rectify the issues with character migration. By the end of the week, a new world will be online.  Players from Refuge will be migrated to this new world with only their Equipment as originally planned before yesterday's issues arose.  Before it goes down tomorrow, ensure your character has the equipment on that you wish to take with you.

For the other servers, migration will continue under the same conditions but on a new schedule. Players on Corruption, Damnation, Entropy, and Vengeance, will be able to migrate to this new world with only the equipped items, or to Mourning with their Equipment and Inventories.  A new Migration Schedule will be released as soon as possible.
Head over to the Shadowbane website for all of the information on the server migration.

Oliver Patches Jedi Academy
7:49 AM | Galen Wiley | Comment on this story

Mac programming guru Brad Oliver has released a new version of Aspyr Media's Jedi Academy which fixes a bug involving 3rd party modifications to the game. Here's what Brad had to say about the patch:

One of the key features of the last Jedi Academy patch was the ability to load code DLLs from within pk3 files, which allowed it to work on pure servers running PC mods. This feature worked in my limited testing, but once people started building Mac DLLs for the 1.01c patch in earnest, they exposed a bug in my implementation.

Turns out that the 1.01c Mac patch would not do the right thing for some zip files created on a PC - notably, the last release of the JA+ mod. As it happens, I had to address this same bug in another Q3 app I'm working on, so I was able to roll the proper fix back into Jedi Academy. I have newfound respect for Carmack's decision to avoid DLLs in the original Quake 3 release in favor of having mod makers use the Quake virtual machine. :-)

Owners of Jedi Academy can download version 1.01d from the link below.
