IMG Previews Homeworld 2
9:06 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

Mid July is about as slow as you can get for gaming news. But Mac games do keep coming and today IMG has posted a hands-on sneak preview based on a recent beta of Homeworld 2, the upcoming space strategy game from Aspyr Media, due to hit stores this fall.

Here's a clip from Nat Panek's preview:

Homeworld 2 is, clearly, the sequel to the popular space RTS game developed by Relic Entertainment, Homeworld. While the original title never (officially) made it to the Mac, its beefed-up successor soon will, thanks to Aspyr Media. As the game does follow a storyline, this may leave some gamers a little up in the air as to what’s going on in the game, so perhaps a brief recap is in order: in Homeworld, a race called the Hiigarans was exiled to a desert planet thousands of years ago. They discovered evidence of their lost home planet and decided to reclaim it. How? By using some mysterious buried hyperdrive technology they’d discovered, of course. So our Hiigaran friends (with the player’s help) build a fleet of ships and set out across the galaxy. By the end of the game, they’ve reached the world of their origin and set up housekeeping. In Homeworld 2, the Hiigarans are once again tossed into the gulfs of interstellar space while trying to defend themselves from the evil, nomadic Vaygr, thought by some to be emissaries of an angry god.

Sky Captain Game Creators Interviewed
9:14 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

HomeLAN Fed has posted an interview with Blitz Digital Studios concerning their Flying Legion Combat Challenge game. An official title for the upcoming movie Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Flying Legion is offered as a free download, rather than as a Flash title as is more commonly done, from the official Sky Captain site for both the Mac and PC.

Discussed in the interview are the relative freedoms and assistance Blitz received when creating the game for Paramount. One aspect that was a bit crunched, however, was the development time.

We feel it is the most elaborate and advanced game that is available for a free download. The Dev time was roughly 3 months, and with consoles taking 2-3 years to produce, we couldn’t be more proud of what we have done in such a short time. There were many custom tools written to achieve the look and overcome many technical limitations, and get the results in half the time it would’ve normally taken…
Also discussed are other titles currently in development as well as a hidden bonus level included in Flying Legion that will activate as the release date for the movie itself approaches.

iDevGames 'Vectorized' Winners
9:06 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

iDevGames has announced the winners of their first 21 Days Later contest. With the theme being Vectorized, programmers were challenged to create games with vectorized graphics while adhering to a strict filesize limit.

Accolades go out to the top 16 winners, who have been posted at the Vectorized results page. Special congratulations go out to Jellybean Fugue, VektorSchlacht, and Trapped, which placed 1st through 3rd, respectively. Jellybean Fugue features a shooter trapped within a maze, VektorSchlacht hearkens back to the days of Spectre with tank-shooting goodness, and Trapped is a straightforward side-scrolling shooter.

Judging, which was done by four well-known Mac gurus, was based off a variety of criteria, including play mechanics, presentation, and overall fun.

Gamers interested in trying out the winners first-hand can find download links at the results page.
