Custer Goes To War
11:21 AM | IMG News | Comment on this story

After observing the July 4th holiday, IMG's Brad Custer has once again updated his section with a brand new desktop. This week's desktop features Aspyr's just released first-person shooter, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down.

Here's a clip from the update:

Delta Force: Black Hawk Down recently went gold and it's been noted in my email that I've missed making a desktop for this title. Of course, I don't like to let down my loyal viewers so this week I am rectifying this matter. :) I wanted to capture the great design aspect of the the box art in this offering. So, with the help of Aspyr Media and my trusty cable modem I was able to create this wallpaper. I simply entitled it, "Rangers", and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it. :)
Head over to Custer's Desktops to check out this latest creation.

Spiderweb Talks Blades of Avernum
11:21 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

IGN's RPG Vault has recently posted a feature looking at Spiderweb Software and Blades of Avernum, one of their most recent titles. Described as an RPG system and including an editor as well as several pre-made adventures, Blades is the 4th installment in the popular Avernum series.

One of the topics touched on is the original incarnation of Blades of Avernum, originally titled Blades of Exile.

The original Blades of Exile system was my very first effort to create something for other people to use. As a result, while I was proud that I created something that worked at all, it had a lot of weaknesses and wasn't really that versatile. In fact, it could be downright painful. I wanted to use everything I had learned in the intervening years to make a system that could create wild hack and slash adventures, intricate plot-heavy stories, and everything in-between.
Various aspects of the development process are also discussed, including the timeline, the technology behind the engine, and challenges faced during the project.

Microsoft Unveils Philippe Starck-Designed Mice
11:21 AM | Lucian Fong | Comment on this story

Microsoft and Philippe Starck, a world famous interior and industrial designer, have collaborated to bring consumers a mouse that not only has a beautiful form, but is functional. At first glance, the surface of the Optical Mouse by S+ARCKseems to have no visible features, except for a blue or orange stripe, which run the length of the mouse and separates the two hemispheres. The two mouse buttons and scroll wheel are so well integrated into the design that they are almost invisible.

Starck talks about the "link" between people and computers in the press release:

"People are doing such amazing things with their computers; however, too often the importance of the link between man and machine is underestimated," Starck said. "The PC and what we use it for is an extension of us. It defines us just as much as the clothes we wear or the music we listen to. With this in mind, I set out to design an artistic bridge that would help people connect with the technology they use every day. The result is modern and refreshingly simple, and will transform the mouse into a badge item that makes a statement about your taste and personality."
The Optical Mouse by S+ARCK is scheduled to hit store shelves by the end of August at a retail price of $34.95.
