Andromeda Online Open Beta Begins
7:11 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

Aepox Games has announced an open beta test for Andromeda Online, a strategic starship wargame for the Macintosh, Windows, and Linux. Players in the game design a command crew, pick a stock starship or design their own, and go into battle.

Here's a bit more info on the game:

And while one-on-one battles are a blast, that's only the beginning! Why play with just one ship when you can command of fleet?! Command an armada of up to 500 scouts, fighters, cruisers, battleships, even space stations! Break them off into fleets and sub-fleets as you scour the galaxy looking for your opponents ships.

Andromeda Online offers unparalleled scalability! Play just one ship against your opponents, or use of fleet! A unique damage based point system ensures that one can use an infinite number of strategies, and still win. Hide in asteroid fields, nebulae were even a deadly plasma storm! Play games with as many as 10 players at a time, make teams and alliances, even play with or against the computer! Design your own crew and ships, offering a micromanagement design for players who are interested, and trade your ship designs online! Or, focus purely on the battle, learn to draw your opponents into hazardous areas, send in micro cloaked fighters, so small and invisible they are nearly impossible to hit! How will you grow your empire? The choice is up to you...

The open beta test is scheduled to run through September 30th. For more information, head over to the official web site.

Doom 3 Tournament at QuakeCon
8:18 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story

The organizers of QuakeCon, the annual Quake-related festival now in its ninth year, have announced this year they will be hosting the first ever official tournament for Doom 3. Earlier in the year id Software reported the game would be done by this summer, but there wasn't confirmation the game would be showing at QuakeCon for certain.

QuakeCon takes place August 12-15 in Mesquite, Texas and those attending can sign-up for the Doom 3 tournament on the first day of the show. Here's a description from their site:

DOOM 3 Inaugural Deathmatch Championship:
Yes, you read that correctly. DOOM 3 Deathmatch is coming to QuakeCon 2004, and there has never been a more level playing field. With DOOM 3 launching this summer, there won’t be anyone who has had time to practice or master the game, and almost any QuakeCon attendee has a chance to walk away with one of the exclusive DOOM 3 prizes. We’re not telling you what they are just yet, but let’s just say that they’re fast. Registration for this 128-player tournament will begin August 12, 2004 – the first day of QuakeCon.
For more information about QuakeCon, head over to the official site. Also stay tuned for any new information about the release of Doom 3 for Mac OS X.

Sega To Release Mac Compatible Saturn Game Pad (In Japan)
8:07 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

Sega is planning on releasing its classic Saturn console game pad for the PC and Macintosh in Japan at the end of this month. The USB device was originally creatied as an exclusive bonus to the Macintosh edition of Puyo Pop Fever, which was released on June 24th. But due to heavy demand, Sega has decided to sell the controller separately for the PC and Mac. Unlike the game pad included with Puyo Pop Fever, which was colored like the original Saturn device, the new game pad will match the white found on Macintosh products such as the iBook.

The Sega Saturn USB game pad will be available in Japanese stores on July 23rd. Sega Direct is currently taking pre-orders for the game pad. There's no word yet on a U.S. release.

Flying Flip Releases Myth III 1.3.1 Update
7:11 AM | Johan Hansén | Comment on this story

Flying Flip Studios has released a patch to the recently released 1.3 version of the classic real-time strategy game Myth III - The Wolf Age. The 1.31 patch addresses an evil crash that would happen if too much happened on the screen at once. The patching procedure is simple, since it's just a matter installing a new application:

All Myth III players should update to the latest versions if they are experiencing problems. Because this is an APPLICATION ONLY fix, those who have already download v1.3 of Myth III need only download a small application patch to get the latest update. The full installers have also been updated to 1.3.1 for your convenience.
If you haven't updated to 1.3 yet, you can find both the full patch and the 1.3 to 1.31 patch from Flying Flip's website.

If you don't have a copy of the game to update, you can purchase one from the IMG Store for only $19.95. Just follow the link provided below to secure a copy of this game.
