Myth III 1.3 Released

FlyingFlip Studios has announced the release of Myth III 1.3, following closely on the release of their editor for the game. The update addresses over 70 issues with the original release, and also updates the 3rd-party Myth Classic Map Pack and the Creation Map Pack to version 2.5.

Some of the changes include the following:

1. . Improved visual effects graphics
2. . Unit balance adjustments
3. . A reliable plugin system for third party unit sets and creations
4. . Added support for wide-screen monitors.
5. . Added the ability to sketch strategy diagrams on in-game overhead map.
6. . Added the ability to scale the size of the overhead map.
7. . Water ripple disturbances now drawn at proper elevations.
8. . Added the ability to view game films.
9. . Added ability to see players present in a film during film playback selection.
10. . Metaserver lobby input lag dramatically improved.
11. . Re-Introduction of the classic Creep On The Borderlands map.
FlyingFlip also mentions an upcoming project, titled Legions of Destiny, that is a standalone game based off of the Myth III engine.

IMG Posts Close Combat: First To Fight First Look

Inside Mac Games has posted a first look sneak preview of MacSoft's Close Combat: First to Fight, a modern-day, team-based 3D shooter. IMG's Chris Ritchie recently paid a visit to MacSoft and reports his findings.

Here's a clip from the preview:

First to Fight seeks to change all this with the most authentic team-based simulation to date. The tactics used by your fireteam in First to Fight are as close to joining the military as you can get without the whole shaving your head and boot camp thing. Every tactic employed in First to Fight comes direct from active duty Marines recently returned from Iraq and Afghanistan. While the game is set in a mid-eastern locale, the MacSoft team is quick to deny any affiliation with present day campaigns. First to Fight is not political, and instead focuses their actions on the realistic presentation of a modern battlefield.

Squabble Challenge, Win an Airport Express

Freeverse today announced a Squabble tournament to be held this upcoming wednesday on their free multi-player Gamesmith service. The winner of their tournament will recieve Apple's latest piece of innovative hardware, an Airport Express base station. Here's the full press release:

New York - June 24, 2004 - Freeverse Software today announced the first online "Squabble Challenge" -- games and a grand prize of a new Airport Express to be given away.

Close Combat: First to Fight First Look At 6 PM Central!

Inside Mac Games will be posting a first-look preview of Destineer's Close Combat: First to Fight today at 6 PM Central, when the media embargo will be lifted. IMG's Chris Ritchie recently went to visit our friends at MacSoft and came away extremely impressed with what he saw of the upcoming team-based 3D shooter. He's written up a preview and we'll be posting some of the first-ever screenshots of the game at 6 PM Eastern.

Mac Everquest 1 Year Anniversary Celebration

The folks at EQMac have announced a One Year Anniversary Bash for EverQuest players. Taking place on June 26th at 1:30pm PST, the bash will consist of two battle royals as well as a GM-lead event with unknown details.

The 1st battle royal will operate by introducing groups of players into combat at a time in staggered time intervals, starting with lv60+ characters and working its way down. The 2nd battle, more interestingly, requires the use of lv1 characters that must be Dwarves, Halflings, or Gnomes.

The prizes offered to the winner of each are as follows:

A Brief Mac Gaming History

1up.com has recently added a new page to its Classic Essential 50. Sitting in at #22 is the Mac, which is accredited as being influential for gaming in terms of both interface, with its mouse-drive properties, and its early game titles, which have served as the basis for further successes down the road.

Older Mac gamers may remember some of the titles mentioned in the feature, including Uninvited, Shadowgate, and Dark Castle, which gets special mention for its mouse-driven interface:

If you play Dark Castle now, it's not that obvious, but you still might pick up on something interesting. This is one of the first successful action games to use a mouse for shooting things. Throwing those rocks is a matter of moving the mouse around to aim and clicking the button to fire. It's pretty crude by modern standards, of course -- you can only aim in so many directions, making beaning the bad guys with his store of rocks a matter of careful trial and error -- but it works, adding a whole new dimension of control to a side-scrolling platformer.
Also covered are other gaming landmarks established by the Mac, various early titles, and the current whereabouts of some of its earliest game programmers.

Custer Offers Up A History Lesson

IMG's Brad Custer has worked up yet another Mac gaming desktop this week. Titled "Historic," this desktop celebrates the upcoming release from MacSoft: Rise of Nations, the real-time strategy game.

With the recent news of Rise of Nations being ported to the Mac by MacSoft, it was a sure sign my mailbox would be full with requests for desktops from this title. Of course, you didn't disappoint because there has been a steady flow of emails stating just this. So, I took the hint and in between answering each one of them I was able to feature Rise of Nations in this week's offering. I wanted to create the feeling of the endless possibilities that 6,000 years of history really holds for us in this desktop.

New World of Warcraft Trailer, Q&A

Yahoo Games has snagged a Blizzard representative to chat about World of Warcraft, the highly anticipated massively multiplayer RPG currently in beta for Mac and PC. Additionally, they got a new trailer of the game which shows off many of the game's player-controlled mounts, as well as traveling systems.

In the interview, team lead Mark Kern discusses how the beta is proceeding currently. Topics include upcoming beta content, his hopes for PvP play, and their plans for avoiding common mistakes of other games in this genre. Here's a clip:

GD: How do you propose to address the "mudflation" problem? [This is a common scenario in massively multiplayer games when oversupply of powerful items devalue too quickly. -Ed]

MK: We are currently in the middle of our big "economy-pass" on the gameplay. We've done several things already, such as making quest items and certain rare items bind to you when you acquire them. A bound item cannot be traded to other players, which helps keep the quest rewards meaningful while reducing inflation. Also, various money sinks are starting to become available in the beta. Mounts are very expensive, for example, and the mail system has some nominal postage attached to sending a letter or item to another player. Given how popular the mail system is becoming, those postage stamps will add up! As the beta progresses, we'll continue to refine the economy.

Aspyr June Newsletter 'Development News'

Among all the normal recapping of the numerous announcements by the company over the past four weeks, the most recent Aspyr Media June newsletter also contains a bit of interesting information in a section called "Development News." In this section, they talk first about Battlefield 1942 quickly moving along towards release, but then discuss what seem like some intriguing end-user tools in the works as well. Here's the relevant except from the newsletter:

Our development group is also working on some R&D projects, including working with Apple's latest Xcode development tools. We've also started designing some end user utilities that will hopefully make Mac gamers' lives easier and make it even simpler to play Aspyr's great game lineup on the Mac.
It's great to see Aspyr putting their new in-house team of developers to work on not just porting great games, but also making the overall Mac gaming experience that much better.
