MacSoft Announces Rise of Nations
8:46 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

MacSoft today announced that it will be publishing the Mac version of Rise of Nations, a critically-acclaimed and award-winning real-time strategy game. The game was originally developed by Brian Reynolds and Big Huge Games and has garnered over 30 gaming awards since its PC release in May of 2003.

Here's more from the official press release:

Rise of Nations is an historical real-time strategy game which combines the epic scope of traditional turn-based strategy (TBS) games with the fast-paced action of RTS games. The game allows players to create new cities, improve their city infrastructure and expand national borders. Players have the option to win through military might using everything from slingshots to cannons to stealth bombers, or they can corner the market on key commodities as they wheel and deal with a wide variety of nations.

Unlike other historical RTS games, Rise of Nations allows gamers to quickly play through eight historical epochs of time from the Ancient Age to the Information age, covering 6,000 years of history. Gamers can play a quick battle on any map as one of 18 nations, or play the non-linear single-player Conquer the World Campaign. Players will also be able to battle with up to 8 players online or via a LAN connection.

The Macintosh version of Rise of Nations has been under development since February by Westlake Interactive and is scheduled for completion this summer.

Head swimming in amnesia, you struggle to your feet only to encounter more assailants intent on finishing the job. EQMac Posts Potential Mac Everquest Sound Fix
10:17 AM | Galen Wiley | Comment on this story

EQMac, a website and community devoted to Mac Everquest players, has posted on their forums an unofficial guide to hacking Everquest for Mac. The hack deals with installing updated sound libraries into the game, thus eliminating previous memory leak issues associated with the older version.

Many users have reported success in using the newly released Miles Sound Libraries with EQMac. The older existing libraries used with EQ Mac have been discovered to simulate a memory leak in the EQ Mac client code, which results in severe drop in framerate. Sometimes described as a freeze.
Because of its nature, the sound fix should only be performed at the user's own risk. Those interested than check out the hack guide for full instructions on installation. A link has been attached to the bottom of this article.

Apple has posted a new feature on the upcoming Mac version of Battlefield 1942. The game, which is currently in beta-testing, is scheduled to be released sometime in June.

Here's a clip from the feature:

Published on the Mac by Aspyr Media, the Deluxe Edition of the game features 16 maps based on well-known European and Pacific World War II battles, including the Normandy invasion and Midway, as well as the 6 maps found in the expansion pack Road to Rome, which highlights the Allied invasion of Italy. All the action is multi-player, whether you play with and against computer-controlled “bots,” human players, or a combination of the two, and up to 64 players can take part in the fight simultaneously. There are three main game types: conquest, team deathmatch and capture the flag. A fourth, co-op, combines bots and human players but plays the same as conquest.
