Virtual Grand Prix 2 Patched to v1.06

Virtual Programming has released a patch that updates Virtual Grand Prix 2 to version 1.06. The patch addresses several problems, including sky detail and force feedback.

Here's a breakdown from their site:

a) SKY PROBLEMS
This 1.06 version fixes a problem that may happen with some graphics card/drivers that prevents the sky from being displayed correctly. Unfortunately, the new sky-drawing method may be slower on older graphics cards, thus reducing the framerate (especially on old iMacs).

b) FORCE FEEDBACK
Because of the latency of many force feedback devices a tradeoff must be found between realism vs stability. This 1.06 version has a slightly improved filter that should reduce "resonance" and oscillations on the steering wheel. However, they will not be completely eliminated, because filtering these frequencies more will result in poorer realism in the simulation of forces applied to the steering wheel.

VGP2, specifically created for the Mac, is a racing simulator that utilizes realistic driving mechanics in its gameplay. More information on this title can be found at VP's site.

The Gamesome Mac Talks tranquility with TQworld

Closer Look at the Torque Engine

Many gamers are already familiar with the Torque Engine, Garage Games' all-in-one solution for indie developers. However, the experience of actually using it to create something may be something less familiar. For those interested in a closer look, the Warcry News Network has posted a preview of the Torque Engine, in which the writer actually uses the engine to create his own little demo.

From what I gather on the boards, for anyone not spending all their waking moments buried in the engine it will probably be a good 3-6 months before you really have a good handle on what’s going on under the hood of TGE. From experience though, I can tell you that after the first week I had a relatively basic demo of a game that was populated with buildings, objects, flora and terrain set up to my own whim. There were even a few NPC’s I tossed in that followed pre-set paths.
The preview also goes into the various tools and facets of the engine, the helpfulness of the Torque Community, and its graphics capabilities.

UT2004 Bonus Pack #2 Released

For those that may have missed it, Beyond Unreal made the Unreal Tournament 2004 Community Bonus Pack 2 available over the weekend. The pack contains a large variety of maps, new characters, and two new mutators for fans to try out.

Mac Blades of Avernum Update

Spiderweb Software has recently released a beta patch for Blades of Avernum. Dubbed a test patch, it currently sits at version 1.1 and works with both registered and unregistered versions.

We have released a test patch for Blades of Avernum to turn it into v1.1. This patch works on both the registered and unregistered versions. It fixes a wide range of bugs and enables you to play scenarios made by the newest version of the scenario editor.
Blades of Avernum is an RPG editor that allows users to create their own scenarios, complete with customized characters and events. Several adventures are also included in the package.

Alien Swarm, Mac Launcher Released

Black Cat Games has recently released a total conversion for Unreal Tournament 2004. Titled Alien Swarm, this TC pits players against an army of bug-like aliens in a game of tactical squad-based combat. Utilizing an overhead view, Alien Swarm features missions with a variety of objectives, various weapons, and cooperative multiplayer.

Some of its other features are as follows:

  • 1-8 players co-operative play.
  • Single mission or Campaign mode.
  • Large array of equipment for your marines, including Assault rifles, Shotguns, SynTek SmartEye Autoguns, Flamethrowers, Pistols, Incendiary Mines, Flares, Stim Packs, Ammo Bags, Sentry Guns, Medkits and more!
  • Skill and experience system allowing your marines to improve as they progress through the campaign.
  • Full tutorial to teach you how to play and to use the equipment at your disposal.
  • 8 unique marines with portaits, personality, skills and background.
This TC has apparently received quite a bit of attention already, and Joe Wilcox of Epic Games has endorsed it as well. Interested Mac gamers should note that a Mac launcher is available for download as well as the main package.

X-Plane 7.41 Arrives

Laminar Research, developers of the infinitely-extensible general-aviation simulator X-Plane, has bestowed upon its users version 7.41 of its flagship product. The new version has a veritable boatload of new features for owners of the modular simulator, far too numerous to list here.

The highlights include a completely new approach to cockpit design, which will likely result in much more realistic and visually-pleasing dashboards. In addition, developer Austin Meyer has released a plug-in SDK that will allow fourth-party developers to expand X-Planes capabilities even further. Nearing completion is a plug-in that will add long-sought-after 3D cockpits.

A rewritten cockpit model is merely the beginning, however: visit the X-Plane website to see a comprehensive list of the changes made to the graphics engine, flight model, and audio engine.

X-Plane is a flight simulator unmatched on the Macintosh market for its attention to detail and modularity, allowing pilots to build and fly any vehicle from a Cessna to a Space Shuttle. The download is a link to the full version, which will disable joystick input after six minutes if an X-Plane CD is not detected. The full version allows unrestricted flight and includes global scenery for nearly the entire planet Earth (and optionally Mars).
