IMG Reviews Altec Lansing inMotion Speakers
11:28 AM | Johan Hansén | Comment on this story

IMG's Tim Morgan has taken a closer look at the Altec Lansing inMotion, a device combining an iPod dock and stereo speakers in a small package. The set clearly uses the look of the iPod to it's advantage.

From the review:

If the world were made of iPods, the inMotion would be wearing perfect camouflage. The device is painted in the same lustrous white that Apple’s iPod sports, and Altec Lansing clearly took care to ensure that the geometry and design of the inMotion matched that of the iPod’s as well.

State of Shadowbane Posted

The latest state of the game for Ubi Soft's MMORPG Shadowbane has now been posted. Featuring news on the latest improvements to the game, along with the latest in-game events, the article provides a neat look at the world of Shadowbane. Here's a snippet:

We have made several changes and improvements to the game since our last State of Shadowbane address. In the last two months, the Rise of the Upstart Gods patch introduced the Divine Favor and Siege Spire systems to the game, as well as a new high-level Elven Zone. Last month, our 2.5 maintenance patch also introduced several performance and stability improvements to the game. Furthermore, the improvements to the siege system have just begun, and we have even more plans to make Shadowbane the premiere sieging game on the market today.

We still have a lot more work ahead of us, so we will continue to add new content and features to the game in the coming months. These upcoming improvements, however, will focus on broader game systems that will give players a wider variety of things to accomplish.

One of those new game systems will be the long-awaited resource system. We will be launching part one of this new feature in the next patch. We will also continue to work extremely hard to improve many outstanding performance and stability issues.

Recent Improvements

The Rise of the Upstart Gods patches have been well received, especially with the inclusion of the Siege Spire and Divine Favor systems. We are extremely pleased that our siege changes have met a large degree of success with the community. And Spires have finally shifted the siege battle dynamic outside of a city's walls, instead of battles being fought from the inside out. This is more in tune with our vision for how sieges should work. In addition, we have added a new high-level adventuring area called "Aeran Belendor" and new Disciplines in the form of the Archmage and Bloodhorn.

In April, we successfully launched the Shadowbane 2.5 maintenance patch. While this patch contained some new content, our efforts were mostly directed at improving stability and performance. In this patch the programming team made several changes to our server architecture that will directly improve memory usage and performance. We also implemented several client-side changes, which should also improve performance. These efforts, combined with the barracks reductions, helped to eliminate many of the lag spikes that were affecting users. Our metrics have shown a large improvement in this area, although we realize that much more work still needs to be done. You can also check out our Q&A with Lead Programmer Ala Diaz for more details about our ongoing efforts to improve Shadowbane’s performance.

Ryan Gordon Releases MojoPatch for OS X Game Dev
9:52 AM | Mike Apps | Comment on this story

Seeking to allow developers an easier way to make patches for games, Ryan Gordon, programmer of Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004 for Mac, recently released the source-code for the software he used to make the patchers for those games. Here's the full scoop on the software, called MojoPatch:

MojoPatch is an application for automatically updating applications. It's meant to be downloaded by an end-user and executed directly. When run, it'll locate the application to be updated and add, remove, or patch files and directories as appropriate. Patching can use the "xdelta" algorithm to reduce the size of the patch download. A README can optionally be display and installed with the patch. MojoPatch itself is a tiny program, so as not to bloat the download unnecessarily. The UI is intentionally very minimal, yet accomplishes all it needs to do. This is free software, under the "zlib license". This license basically allows any use of the software, including closed-source and commercial exploitation; it is useful for me, I hope it will be for you, too.

MojoPatch is currently a MacOS X project, but is designed with portability in mind, so it could be converted into a Linux or Windows application without too much difficulty.

Aspyr Ships Medal of Honor: Breakthrough
9:19 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

Aspyr Media today announced that Medal of Honor: Breakthrough, the new expansion pack for the popular WW II first-person shooter, has begun shipping. The game is expected to be in online and retailer stores on June 1st.

Here's more from the official press release:

The latest expansion pack for the critically acclaimed hit title Medal of Honor Allied Assault™ takes players from combat with Rommel in North Africa to the heart of Italy in the struggle to breakthrough the fortified lines of the Third Reich. The game was licensed from Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Macintosh conversion was completed by Aspyr Studios, Aspyr’s internal development group.

As U.S. Army Sergeant John Baker, players join the battle at Kasserine Pass in North Africa, race to capture Messina in Sicily, and finally repel the German army at the historic battle of Monte Battaglia in the heart of Italy. Armed with a new arsenal of weapons, players will fight alone and with squad mates as they rush to stop the Axis powers.

The multiplayer game has been enhanced with the addition of Liberation Mode. In this mode, defeated players must be rescued by surviving teammates to continue the fight. In addition, players can drive tanks, and command minesweepers to defuse mines. Players also can choose from American, British, Italian, and German skins in all multiplayer modes.

As with the original Medal of Honor™ game, the producers sought counsel from numerous military sources to ensure the game is as historically authentic as possible. EA’s Los Angeles development team continues to work closely with the Congressional Medal of Honor Society to ensure Medal of Honor Allied Assault Breakthrough reflects the ideals and integrity of the prestigious Medal of Honor and upholds the integrity of the Medal of Honor game franchise. In addition, Capt. Dale Dye, who served as military technical advisor on the previous titles in the Medal of Honor franchise, continues his efforts with the Medal of Honor Allied Assault Breakthrough team.

Medal of Honor Allied Assault Breakthrough is rated “T” for Teen by the ESRB. The original Medal of Honor Allied Assault is required to play Medal of Honor Allied Assault™ Breakthrough. The IMG Store is currently taking pre-orders for the game.
