Sweeney Talks Next Unreal Engine
8:26 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story
Beyond Unreal managed to snag some time with Tim Sweeney of Epic Games during the recently held E3. The focus of the interview is on the Unreal Engine 3, which was demoed at E3 and has quite a few folks in the gaming community buzzing.
While the usual questions about poly counts and system requirements are asked, Sweeney also elaborates on the improved physics and character animation in the latest engine, noting that skeletons made up of several hundred bones are available, making things like articulated fingers and faces available. He also elaborates on "breaking strength":
There'll be more integration between hand created animation, physics animation and procedural animation. Now days, all our joints have breaking strength in them. So if you actually shoot a character's arm with enough force it will break his arm off and go flying. You can pull arms or body parts off characters nowadays. It has some sick possibilities, but you can do it.Also commented on are the new level of physics detail, the capability for mechanized vehicles, and collision detection.

Gamers Hell has made the E3 trailer for Doom 3 available for download. Currently in development by id, Doom 3 is the latest installment in what has become a classic line of FPS titles.
While the trailer is composed of Xbox footage, it shows off the kinds of experiences that players can expect to encounter during gameplay. Most everything is draped in heavy shadows, and a number of warped creatures are shown both attacking and getting shot up.
The trailer is in Quicktime format, and is sized at around 67 MB. Several download mirrors have been provided by Gamers Hell for those interested in acquiring it.
