Aspyr Announces X2, IMG Preview Posted
11:30 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

Aspyr Media today announced X2: Wolverine's Revenge for Mac OS X. The conversion of the game is being done by i5works and according to Aspyr, the game is at the Final Candidate stage, which means it should be going gold soon.

Here's a description of the game from Aspyr's web site:

Decades ago, a secret organization brainwashed you and implanted a virtually unbreakeable adamantium skeleton into your body. Now, as Wolverine™-the X-men's™ most dangerous weapon-you've discovered you were also implanted with a deadly virus that will kill you within the next 48 hours unless the anitdote is found. Your future is at risk, you must return to confront your past at the sinister Weapon X™ facility. Time is running out. And so is your life.
IMG has also posted a hands-on preview of the game based on a recent beta. Be sure to check it out.

Jedi Academy Previewed
2:31 PM | Galen Wiley | Comment on this story

The Action Vault at IGN has posted a preview of the upcoming Star Wars-based action game Jedi Knight III: Jedi Academy, the fourth game in the Dark Forces series. The preview discusses many of the new features the game introduces, including its nonlinear "missions" progression system, weapons, multiplayer modes, and more. Here's a snippit from the article:

As you might expect, Jedi Academy will include a number of familiar characters and locations. We caught a glimpse of Chewbacca fighting at your side in one of the missions, and the planets of Tatooine and Hoth were named. The lizard-like tauntauns native to the latter's windswept ice fields will be available as mounts in some of the multiplayer scenarios. You'll also be able to take control of an unspecified number of vehicles; one stated explicitly was the All Terrain Scout Transport walker, or AT-ST. Multiplayer aficionados will be able to partake in deathmatch, duel and a siege mode in which two teams, Imperial and Rebel, will have conflicting objectives. It appears the game will support up to 16 players. We might expect the Quake III engine to support as many as 64, but the developers seem to be emphasizing quality over quantity.
For screenshots and more, check out the preview at IGN. Jedi Knight III: Jedi Academy is currently slated for a PC release in September, with the Xbox version coming in close behind in October.

While a Mac version has not yet been announced, the game runs on the already Mac-available Quake III: Arena engine, and because game publisher Aspyr Media has already released the game's predecessor, Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, a port seems entirely possible. Stay tuned to IMG as we keep you posted.

Tiger Woods 2004 Q&A at CVG
2:31 PM | Galen Wiley | Comment on this story

Gaming publication Computer and Video Games has posted a new article on their website; an exclusive Q&A session with Jim Boland, producer of the upcoming EA Sports golf sim, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004. The article covers a wide array of information about the game, including new features, graphical improvements, the newly introduced character creation system, and much more. Below is an excerpt from the article:

How about the visuals, have you improved them?

Boland: We've redone the graphics this year, trying to make the courses come alive. You see birds flying, if it's windy conditions you'll see the grass blowing. Right there [points to screen] at Royal Birkdale it's got the tall grass that moves in the wind. And the trees, you'll see leaves falling off the tree and stick on the ground. We're just trying to make it as realistic an experience as possible.

Be sure to read the full article for more information. Tiger Woods 2004 is expected to ship for the PC sometime this fall. A Mac version, while yet to be announced, is a possibility, and would likely be handled by Aspyr Media, who released the games predecessor, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003 for the Mac earlier this year. We'll keep you posted.

MacSoft Ships Neverwinter Nights
12:10 PM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

MacSoft today announced that it has begun shipping Neverwinter Nights for the Macintosh. According to MacSoft GM Al Schilling, “Neverwinter Nights is the most amazing and accurate D&D experience ever seen on the Mac and it shipped from our warehouse, as promised, on Wednesday, July 30.”

Here's more from the official PR:

The most complete software adaptation ever of the classic pen-and-paper Dungeons & Dragons® role-playing game, Neverwinter Nights is a best-selling PC game created by BioWare Corp., creators of the nearly 5 million-selling Baldur’s Gate series.

Players will enjoy a fast-paced adventure, revolving around an epic story of faith, war and betrayal. The intuitive user interface was designed to be accessible to new RPG gamers as well as the hardcore fan base.

More than just a game, Neverwinter Nights breaks new ground as the first complete role-playing system for the computer platform, allowing players to step into the shoes of either a hero or the Dungeon Master to tell their own stories and create their own adventures in the spirit of the exciting pen and paper original.

"Neverwinter Nights is one of this year’s most eagerly-anticipated Mac releases because of its fast-paced adventure, online multiplayer capabilities, the new Dungeon Master feature and a whole lot more," according to Schilling.

"Neverwinter Nights will provide limitless adventure and Macintosh gamers will have unprecedented game play options as they join the existing Neverwinter Nights community," said Trent Oster, BioWare's Project Director and Producer of Neverwinter Nights.

Neverwinter Nights requires a Macintosh computer with a 450Mhz G4 (or faster) processor, 256MB RAM, 32MB video card, and 2.1GB hard disk space and a monitor with support for 800x600 or higher resolution.

The IMG Store is currently taking pre-orders of Neverwinter Nights and will be shipping them on Monday. Be sure to place your order today.

MacSoft Releases Dungeon Siege Update
11:51 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

MacSoft has released a 1.1.2 update for its 3D RPG, Dungeon Siege. The updater is for the US retail version of Dungeon Siege and synchronizes the US codebase with the French and German versions to allow for international network play. The update also contains the following fixes:

• Software now checks for 350 MHz (rather than 400 MHz) as the minimum CPU speed. Holding down 'p' on game startup will skip this check.

• Fixed a problem with the game cursor getting "stuck" on the left side of the screen under certain dual monitor conditions.

• Stabilization fix in the Loader subsystem.

• Fixed a problem where the game cursor wouldn't draw under Mac OS X version 10.3 "Panther".

• Added additional error reporting code on software quit.

The update weighs in at just 1.28 MB. To download the file, click on the link below. Be sure to also check out IMG's review of Dungeon Siege.

Freeverse Issues Latest Newsletter
10:26 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

Freeverse Software has released their latest newsletter, Volume I, Issue 7. It contains news on Airburst Extreme, which was announced at Macworld CreativePro Expo last month, as well as updates on some of their games including Burning Monkey Solitaire, Solace, and more.

Here's a snippet from the newsletter discussing some of Freeverse's upcoming projects:

Burning Monkey Mah Jong, our tile-matching game and the ferocious action title, Active Lancer are still in development, and they're getting closer. Both games are for Macintosh computers running Mac OS 9 or later, and they work great in Mac OS X. Repeat after us: "It's coming soon, it's coming soon."

We've renamed the Burning Monkey Word Factory to Burning Monkey Game Show. It's still a wacky game, but we thought that Game Show is better, because words don't come from factories, but they're often a part of game shows.

The Game Show has plenty of game modes that are sure to tickle the underused parts of your brain. So keep reading MontyMail for details.

Custer's Desktops: James Bond 007: NightFire
9:55 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

IMG's Brad Custer is back with another snazzy new desktop. This week he features Aspyr's James Bond 007: NightFire. Here's what Brad had to say about his latest creation:

Since the announcement at the end of June by Aspyr Media that James Bond 007: NightFire was coming to the Mac there has been a steady topic in my email. Yep, you guessed it - everyone wants a desktop for it. ;) Now I was presented with the several ways to pursue this task. When you think Bond of course you have to think of gadgets, cars and women. So, in this week's wallpaper I decided to feature Makiko Hayashi, aka "Kiko", the bodyguard for Mayhew in the game. I simply entitled this week's feature, "Femme Fatale", and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it.
