Andrew Meggs on Mac Half-Life 2

A recent IMG forum thread concerning the lobbying for a Mac version of Half-Life 2, the upcoming FPS from Valve, has a couple of posts that may be of interest to those wondering about the viability of HL2 ever making it to the Mac. The first post comes from Andrew Meggs, who was originally hired by Valve to do the Mac port of the first Half-Life and is currently working as the lead programmer for the upcoming PC version of Vampire, which he notes is based on the Source Engine:
From a purely technical point of view, there's no reason Half-Life 2 couldn't make it to the Mac. The new code is far more modular than the original, to the point where maintaining a Mac version alongside the updates and changes to the PC version could be fairly trivial. Mods and even commercial titles like Vampire could be ported over very rapidly based off the initial work to port Half-Life 2.He adds that, techincal feasibility aside, money and politics tend to have more of an influence on such decisions.

IMG's Dumb Letters Returns

Few articles posted on IMG have generated more emails than the "Dumb Letters to IMG" feature we posted back in March. After receiving over 100 emails from people who wanted more, we decided to collect as many new dumb letters as possible. It wasn't easy. Dumb emails don't come often. And some emails were obvious fakes (we received a bunch of fake "dumb" letters" in the days following the posting of the first feature.)
So over the past few months we've collected the best of the best. We hope you enjoy them.

Bungie has recently updated the Mac/PC Halo FAQ, answering some questions about the possibility of a demo, beta test, and Mac version of the game.
Here's the complete update:
Q: Will there be a playable demo? When will it be available? Will it be available for download? Westlake Interactive is currently working on the Macintosh version of Halo. The mac conversion is based upon GearBox's Halo PC code. The PC and Mac versions are planned for release in late summer this year. We will keep you informed as more information about Halo for Mac is available.

A: There will be a playable demo available for download shortly after the game is released.
Q: Will there be any kind of Beta test?
A: We are definitely planning on beta testing the multiplayer portion of the game. However, we have not yet determined whether or not it will be a private/closed beta or a public/open beta. Any new updates will be announced here on Bungie.net.
Q: What about the Mac version of Halo? What's happening with it?
A: The Mac version is in the capable hands of our friends at MacSoft and Westlake Interactive and is scheduled for a near simultaneous release with the PC version. All of the new features and extras that are being added for the PC will also be available when Halo makes its way to Macs later this year.

Green Dragon Announces Haiku Contest Winners

Green Dragon Creations today announced the winners of their haiku contest. Winners of the contest will be receiving Green Dragon's entire collection of games plus Riot!, a 2 to 4 player card game.
The company has chosen a number of prize winners based on varying categories such as "Worst Play On Words" and "Best Suck Up". Here's the list of winners:

World of Warcraft: Night Elves Info & Screenshots Posted

At last month's Electronic Entertainment Expo, Blizzard announced a fifth new playable race to the upcoming massive multiplayer game, World of Warcraft, the Night Elves. Blizzard recently posted some new information regarding the Night Elves as well as new screenshots of the race.
Here's some more info on the latest race:
The reclusive Night Elves were the first race to awaken in the World of Warcraft. These shadowy, immortal beings were the first to study magic and let it loose throughout the world nearly ten thousand years before Warcraft I. The Night Elves' reckless use of magic drew the Burning Legion into the world and led to a catastrophic war between the two titanic races. The Night Elves barely managed to banish the Legion from the world, but their wondrous homeland was shattered and drowned by the sea. Until recently, the Night Elves closed themselves off from the rest of the world and remained hidden atop their holy mountain of Hyjal for many thousands of years. The Legion's invasion brought the Night Elves out of their long period of slumber. They now have renewed interest in shaping the world, and for the first time are allying themselves with other races to insure the continued survival of Azeroth. As a race, Night Elves are typically honorable and just, but they are very distrusting of the 'lesser races' of the world. They are nocturnal by nature and their shadowy powers often elicit the same distrust that they have for their mortal neighbors.According to Blizzard, beta testing is expected to begin in Q3 (sometime between August and October), and it will be done in stages. Allegro Ported to OS X

iDevGames has noted that Allegro, a C/C++ based game programming library, has recently been made available for OS X. A freely distributed library, Allegro is highly flexible and includes 3D, floating point, and input functions:
The new "Work In Progress" with this support has not yet been released (4.1.10 - 4.1.9 is still on the website), but it is available in CVS and is being developed and tested. The person responsible is Angelo Mottola - he can be found on the allegro developers mailing list, accessible from the Allegro homepage. Essentially, this development is going to allow making Mac OS X games a snap. The port is already "lightyears" ahead of SDL. Not to mention, there are already numerous free Allegro games out for PC and Linux, written by hobbyists over the years, that will be portable to Mac OSX with little more than than a recompile in many cases. The code, as I said, is only available in CVS, but it would be nice to have some experienced Cocoa developers join the list and become active contributers. In addition, while the next WIP will likely not be bug free, I've personally always found Allegro WIP releases to be stable enough for development.In related news, iDevGames has started an Introduction to Programming feature that aims to assist those considering a career in the field of computer programming. Metallica Game Announced

In a bit of surprising news, Vivendi Universal, owner of highly-esteemed companies such as Blizzard and Sierra has announced a new deal with rock legends Metallica. Through this partnership, they plan on making a third-person vehicle combat game, using the voices of the band members along with numerous tracks from them.
Below is a snippet from the press release:
The new title -- a high action, third person vehicle combat game packed with fully customized vehicles and weaponry, endless terrain and desperate, murderous opponents -- will include voice-overs from band members, incidental background music and other exclusive content from Metallica. Under terms of the contract, Metallica will also record an original song exclusively for the game along with a music video featuring elements from the interactive experience. A sneak-peek trailer of the title will appear on Metallica's new album, St. Anger, which hits store shelves on June 5, 2003, and will also be featured during the band's "Summer Sanitarium Tour" kicking-off July 4th in Detroit, Michigan.This should certainly be exciting news for any Metallica fans out there. New Spyhunter Trailer Hosted by Apple

Spyhunter, the action-packed racing and shoot-em-up homage to the coin-op classic, has had a new gameplay video clip posted on Apple's website. Showcasing the fast-paced and hold-on-to-your seat action that is to come with car chases and transformative vehicles, the trailer displays the crisp graphics and far-off exotic destinations present in the game.
The trailer itself, like most other Apple game trailers, comes in two sizes, the larger 320x240 version of which is only available if you have a registered version of Quicktime Pro. It clocks in at around 10 mb and is a minute and a half long. The smaller 240x180 version is only 4.6 mb. You can grab both of the trailers at the Apple games link below.
Spyhunter was developed by TransGaming and ported to the Mac by Aspyr. It is currently available for purchase from the IMG Store for $29.95, $27.95 for IMG Pro members. You can purchase the game as well at the link below.
