Aspyr Announces Tony Hawk 4 for Mac and PC
6:00 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Pursuing their announcement earlier this year regarding cross-platform publishing, Aspyr Media has made the staggering announcement that they will be publishing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 (THPS4) for both Mac and PC. The current successor in the hugely popular Tony Hawk skateboarding game series, THPS4 looks to bring even more tricks, goals, and skaters to gamers.

Some of the new features include the ability to skate on moving objects and skitch behind cars. The usual core of THPS-style gameplay will aslo be intact:

Players take on the role of legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk and 13 other athletes as they skate through enormous free roaming levels, choose from 190 progressively harder goals and build their skills to perform 14 of the greatest skateboarding stunts of all time. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 delivers the deepest and most challenging gameplay experience in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series. The game's enhanced career mode allows players to earn respect and the chance to take on all new pro goals by conquering a skater-specific Pro Challenge based on each skater's personal history.
As most gamers are aware, THPS4 is a major A-list title, and for Aspyr to gain publishing rights for both the Mac and PC versions is a major coup.

They note that demos for both platforms are currently in the works, and that a trailer will also be available sometime in the future. In the meantime, those interested in more information, including tentative system requirements, can find it at Aspyr's new THPS4 mini-site.

Aspyr Releases Medal of Honor: Spearhead Demo
3:51 PM | Jefferson Regan | Comment on this story

Aspyr Media has released a multiplayer demo of Spearhead, the upcoming expansion to the popular WWII FPS, Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault. The expansion pack, which requires Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault, focuses on the final months of WWII, culminating in the fall of Berlin. Please note, however, that the demo does not require the full version of the game.

Here's a bit more info about Spearhead:

Medal of Honor Allied Assault: Spearhead represents a unique addition to the Medal of Honor franchise. Players will assume the role of Sgt. Jack Barnes as he endures the final months of World War II, from Operation Overlord to the Battle of the Bulge and culminating with the fall of Berlin. The Medal of Honor Allied Assault: Spearhead combines nine expansive single-player levels with over 12 new multiplayer maps and includes new locations, new weapons, and new soldiers.

Set during the last year of the war in Europe, June 1944 to May 1945, the Medal of Honor Allied Assault: Spearhead expansion gives players a sense of the courage it took to parachute behind enemy lines during Operation Overlord, halt the German counter offensive during the Battle of the Bulge, and engage the Germans as they desperately try to defend their capital, Berlin.

The demo can be downloaded from our sister site, Macgamefiles.com, weighing in at a hefty 136MB. The demo will also be available shortly for our IMG Pro subscribers via their Hot Downloads page.

IMG Previews Pangea's Enigmo
11:03 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

IMG has posted a preview of Enigmo. Pangea Software is currently working on one of those rare puzzle titles that could cause gamers to put down their miniguns in favor of bumpers, slides, and sponges. Titled Enigmo, this game could have what it takes to push its way to the forefront of Mac puzzle gaming.

Here's a clip from the preview:

The premise of Enigmo, like most good puzzle games, is one of simplicity. Players will be presented with a level that consists of a basic platform structure of some sort, along with any number of reservoirs and containers. Each reservoir spews forth an endless stream of liquid in the form of drops, which players must then direct into the correct containers. Once each container hits 50 drops, the level is completed and the player can move on.

Aleph One Network Update
10:54 AM | Mike Apps | Comment on this story

Aleph One the open source version of Bungie's classic Marathon series, is getting closer and closer to being playable online. The latest update to Aleph One's news page describes the success of one the members of Aleph One's mailing list playing a one-on-one game over a broadband connection. Although he has yet to test it with more than three people, this is certainly a big step in the right direction.

Here's the full update:

Aleph One has been working better and better over long-distance Internet connections. If you and a friend each have reasonably fast net access, it would definitely be worth your while to do engage in some multiplayer fun. Here's a report that John Blase recently sent to our mailing list on the state of Aleph's multiplayer features:

Just tried playing the newest build (3/31) in a network game of Beyond Thunderdome in M00. Me (DSL) and my brother (cable modem) had much fun in the arena doing what mom would never have let us done in the house growing up. The blood, the carnage, the dead bodies flying across the arena due to a low SPNKR missile... it was just what we needed as a stress reliever!

The notes:

1) Gathering games and joining worked wonderfully. It seemed to work fastest if the joiner joined by address first, then the gatherer gathered the game. However, this could be due to bias on the part of my brother being slow.

2) While the game play did slow down, with only two people, it wasn't enough to halt the game play. All aspects of the game slowed down, not just the actions. Moving, monsters, scenery... they all took a slight performance hit. I'm guessing that the more people on a WAN that are playing, the slower it'll get, due to packet traveling distances and times. I'll try this again with 3 people (perhaps tonight!) and see how it goes.

3) No stuttering or other game problems. Everything was working smoothly, albeit slow. No out-of-sync errors at all.

4) The already documented sprites problem is still in effect.

In addition to this news was a small update noting that the latest OS 9 build of the game is now available. For more information on Aleph One, or to download it, follow the provided links below.

Custer Build His SimCity
8:39 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

IMG's desktop guru, Brad Custer, has posted his latest creation. This week's desktop features SimCity 4, the upcoming city building simulation by Aspyr Media, due to be released in May.

Here's what Brad had to say about his latest desktop:

Since the release of the Aspyr Media Newsletter last week, I've had a steady flow of email regarding this game. It's becoming obvious to me that anything with the word "sim" in front of it is very popular these days. So, not being one to let my viewers down, this week is dedicated to SimCity 4. I had fun creating this week's wallpaper using art supplied by EA Games. I was quiet pleased with the end result. I simply entitled it "City Life" and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it.

Shadowbane City Building Guide
8:18 AM | Johan Hansén | Comment on this story

IGN has posted an extensive guide on how to build and maintain a city in the recently-released massive multiplayer online RPG Shadowbane from Wolfpack Studios. The guide is based on a beta-testers experience as a Guild Master. While some things may have changed in the final full version of the game, the guide does provide lots of useful information for those hoping to achieve the role of Guild Master or Architect in the game.

A little excerpt from the guide:

In your Manage City Assets HUD you'll find an area for guards. This can be confusing and the guards don't always respond the way you'd like. Lets review some basics. You'll want to place at least one guard shack near your ToL and put that asset's guard behavior as "Guard ToL". These guards will now lurk near your ToL and keep out unwanted baddies close to your city center. Your other guards can use Patrol Points so they can wander around. You can also set them to stand in a certain position such as just inside a gate. You should constantly play with your guards and get comfortable with them. If you're lucky and skilled you can, over time, even get them to walk up ramps and stand on the walls or even go outside.
The full guide is divided into 13 parts. Don't let this scare you away from an intended role as a Guild Master. Be sure to head over to IGN and read the guide, as it's also good read even for those who don't plan on building a city of their own, since it also gives insight to the dynamics of a city.

If you want more information about the game and the basic gameplay, you can check out our own preview. Shadowbane is available for order from the IMG store.

Neverwinter Nights Q&A
6:00 AM | Zack Lipowski | Comment on this story

Recently, CRPG.RU hosted a Q&A with Tom Ohle and Darcey Pajak of BioWare about the upcoming Neverwinter Nights expansion, Shadows of Undrentide. Among other things, the Q&A touched on the new Harper Scout class, improved graphics and A.I., new weapons, a follow up expansion and new outdoor and indoor environments. Here's an excerpt from the Q&A:

CRPG.RU: Could you tell us about the locations present in this add-on? Will they mostly be city or wilderness-based?

Darcy: The adventure will take place in both wilderness and the city. The story starts the player off in the snowy village of Hilltop in the Silver Marches. From there, the player begins to gain more experience and confidence in their abilities and sets out into the wilderness surrounding Hilltop and eventually to the deadly Anauroch desert. We wanted a variety of locations to create a dynamic story and show off the new tilesets.

Shadows of Undrentide is set to be released for the PC April 25th. The Mac version of Neverwinter Nights is being developed in-house by BioWare and published by MacSoft. While no announcement of a Mac version of Shadows of Undrentide was released, a Mac port would seem promising.

BloodRayne Goes Gold
6:00 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Aspyr Media has announced that BloodRayne has officially hit Gold Master status, and that duplication should begin soon. Announced only last month, BloodRayne has managed to span several gaming consoles as well as the PC, and will now soon be available to Mac users.

For those unfamiliar with the title, BloodRayne is a 3rd-person action game that runs in a similar vein as Max Payne. Players take control of a half-human/half-vampire agent hired to eliminate an occult faction of pre-Nazis. Besides the use of a variety of guns, BloodRayne also has access to her arm blades, martial arts moves, and several vampiric powers.

Though we don't have an exact release date, expect to see this one sometime later this month. Those seeking more information are encouraged to check out IMG's recent preview.
