Dungeon Siege Preview; Current Status
9:20 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story
Today IMG posted a first look preview of Dungeon Siege, the action-oriented 3D RPG created by Gas Powered Games and coming to the Mac via Destineer's Bold label.
In case you haven't heard much about the game yet, the preview will give you a quick overview of its gameplay, characters, and graphics engine. Following is an excerpt:
Where Dungeon Siege begins to really break away from the standard RPG formula is how your skills are improved. Fighting and magic skills are broken down into four basic categories; melee weapons, range weapons, offensive and defensive magic (called Combat and Nature magic). Instead of gaining experience points, leveling up, and putting a few new points into whichever categories you want, Dungeon Siege takes an arguably more realistic approach. Check out the rest of the preview for much more information on the game.
Want to be the ultimate swordsman? Then you better practice with melee weapons, because only by using one of these four techniques will you improve it.
Westlake Interactive is already working on the port, and IMG also received a quick update from president Glenda Adams yesterday on their current status.
It's still in early development- it's a VERY big project, with a lot of technical challenges. We've been making good progress, but the initial work to get something up and playable is definitely a challenge on this one.Bold hopes to have the game done sometime early next year, and IMG will definitely keep you posted on its status in the coming months.

This week's mission is #4 - Black Needle. Your team is going in to rescue two UN peacekeepers that got cut off by the Russian advance. They are holed up in a ruined building. You have to secure a crossroads, and leave part of your team as rearguard there to stop the Russian reinforcements. The UN troops are under heavy attack, so you can't waste time getting to them.Tune in next Friday for some more shots from Ghost Recon. Be on the lookout for an extensive sneak preview on IMG soon.

Master of Orion 3 Development Update
9:20 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story
Having been in development for over two years now, Master of Orion 3 is finally nearing completition and should be released sometime this winter. Adrenaline Vault recently spoke to Infogrames senior producer, Constantine Hantzopoulos, to get a status update on the game. According to the producer, the game is fast approaching the alpha stage:
When asked how much of MOO3 was done, Hantzopoulos said the game is approaching the alpha stage of development, which he defines as "feature complete" and when a project is "playable from start to finish." Although it's surprising that MOO3 hasn't reached alpha after 27 months of work, the senior producer says Infogrames and Quicksilver are still aiming for a Quarter 4 2002 release for the PC version. "Fans will be playing MOO3 during the holidays," he said. For more info, be sure and check out the rest of the story at the Adrenaline Vault. Master of Orion 3 will be published for the Mac by MacSoft.

This will give the publisher and creator about two months to balance and play test the product before it hits stores. Look up the word "crunch" in Webster's dictionary, and you might see a picture of the MOO3 team, which Hantzopoulos said is busy locking up the game's final features. The last items to be completed: The laws for the Orion Senate. These will allow players to bend or break MOO3's rules for a certain amount of time. After that comes extensive and highly scrutinous play balancing.

Q&A, New Screenshots for Torque-Based Games
9:20 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story
The Gamers' Press has posted a short Q&A that focuses on GarageGames and the Torque engine, a contribution aimed at providing a powerful gaming engine to smaller devleopers at a low cost, in effect leveling the playing field a bit.
The questions themselves are of a general nature, with interviewee Jay Moore talking about everything from Torque's 300,000 lines of C++ to his belief that even smaller devleopers can make big games:
GP: A lot of people have been saying that it's now impossible for small, low budget development teams to make a big hit game these days. Call me crazy, but I'm going to bet that you disagree. Posted along the Q&A session are newly released screenshots of several upcoming Torque-based games, including Chain Reaction, Marble Blast, and Realm Wars. Those interested in viewing the pics or the session can find both at The Gamers' Press.
The Gamers' Press - Seven Questions with Jay Moore of GarageGames
JM: Calling you crazy[sic]... hasn't that already been done? Before we started GarageGames yes it was nearly impossible, today no. That is exactly what GarageGames is all about, giving programmers and artists with the passion to make great games the tools that will allow them to compete. The technology and the marketing suits shouldn't be what dictates what games get created or who can build them, talent and teams with the passion will drive a much more vibrant industry. Our community project, RealmWars, is a great example of a MMORPG that couldn't be created by a small team, but is looking very promising with the contributions being made by our community team.

Squish! Goes Beta
9:20 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story
Monkey Byte Development recently announced that a beta version of their online game, Squish, is now available. The game is being produced in a partnership with IGN.com and will be released shortly.
Here's a bit more info on Squish:
Hidden behind an innocent smile and tasty color lies a mixture of pure evil and a little food coloring. Reproducing at an alarming rate, these monsters waste no time in overwhelming their victims. Fortunately they are unstable in numbers so they can be neutralized. However if they sense danger, they will reproduce more quickly and eventually take over... it's just a matter of time.Monkey Byte is encouraging Mac gamers to head over to their web site to try out the pre-release beta of Squish.
Monkey Byte (add to watch list)
Squish is a simple game of foresight and finger speed. Colored drops of toxic waste will fall from the spawning bar located at the top of the play area. These drops will begin to accumulate at the bottom and continue to grow in numbers unless you neutralize them.
