New Mac Hall Comic Posted on IMG
12:14 PM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

This week's Mac Hall comic features Bioware's Neverwinter Nights. Although originally slated to be released simultaneously, a few weeks ago MacSoft announced that it would be publishing the game this fall, to the disdain of some Mac gamers, including Anthony from Mac Hall.
Mac Hall's Anthony explains the latest comic:

Neverwinter Nights has stripped me of this patience. They've hit me in a chink in the armor- tabletop gaming. Anyone who combines my rabid enthusiasm for 3rd edition D&D with my general zeal for video games will understand where I'm coming from. Unfortunately, every PC boy with similar interests seems to want to tell me about the game in great detail.

I'll be waiting, having little other option. If the delay starts to bother you too much, do what I do- don't think of the PC people as blessed for getting games sooner than we do. Think of them as millions of playtesters, ensuring that what reaches us is a better product. Or hurt them. I find that helps, too.

Quake III Connect Tweaks Guide
6:00 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Accelerate Your Mac has noted the posting of a link in their forums that points to a Quake III connection tweaks guide. Currently posted at SavageUK.com, the guide contains in-depth terminology and explanations concerning the tweaking of various connection settings in order to maximize gameplay during Quake III sessions.

Here's a clip concerning the cg_smoothclients setting:

This setting helps smooth out movement when other players have packet loss, very low rate or low cl_maxpackets. Normally you would see them stutter or warp on your screen in multiplayer. Setting this cvar to "1" adds extra prediction code for such clients and their movements as seen by you should be less erractic. One side effect of enabling this option is that prediction errors can occur. Do not use cg_smoothclients if you are using a negative cl_timenudge.
For those that don't wish to wade through terminology, the guide also lists suggested settings for various methods of connection such as LAN, ASDL, and ISDN. Be sure to check it out if you're into Quake III!

Warcraft III Released, Mac Patch Available
6:00 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

On Wednesday we weren't able to publish any news thanks to the release of WarCraft III. Why, you ask? Well, over the last two days we've been working hard trying to ship all the WarCraft III pre-orders we've received. The good news is that almost all pre-orders have now been sent out.

But for those who haven't heard the news, on Wednesday Blizzard announced the official release of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, the highly anticipated sequel to the company's best-selling PC game series. With over 4.5 million copies of initial orders, the release represents the biggest worldwide launch in PC-gaming history.

Here's more on WarCraft III:

In Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, players revisit the war-torn world of Azeroth a generation after the end of the Second War between the Orcs and the Humans. The fragile peace that had since settled over the land is now on the verge of being shattered, for a dark power has returned after thousands of years to carry out its nefarious plans. Two new races - the Undead Scourge and the Night Elves - emerge to join the fray, as players follow a single epic storyline through four successive campaigns. Players can also take the battle into their own hands in an enhanced multiplayer mode, playable on local area networks and exclusively over the Internet on Battle.net, the largest online service of its kind in the world.

A focus on concentrated battles between groups of mighty warriors brings an exciting new blend of action to the franchise. In the single-player game, players follow the adventures of Legendary Heroes, who grow more formidable with experience. As the game progresses, these Heroes are able to learn spells and special abilities and acquire powerful magic items. Heroes advance even faster in multiplayer games, adding to the intensity of strategic combat between rival powers. Expanded multiplayer options include the ability to share units and resources with allies and to compete anonymously against other players of similar skill levels. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos also includes the most powerful and full-featured World Editor ever released for a Blizzard game. The World Editor puts the same tools used by Blizzard's designers into the hands of players, enabling them to create 3D maps and unique missions, with scripts for units, spells, and action-packed events. Players will also be able to produce their own in-game cinematics, using flexible camera controls and incorporating .mp3-based sound files.

On Thursday, Blizzard released a downloadable patch of WarCraft III, bringing it to version 1.0.1. The patch contains various fixes for Battle.net and also includes some balance changes. To download the patch, simply connect to Battle.net, or head over to Macgamefiles.com to download the standalone patch.

Be sure to also visit our forums, as people are engaging in heavy discussions about WarCraft III.

WarCraft III Is available for sale through the IMG Store for $59.99. A review of WarCraft III will be posted soon.

    Gamespot Reviews Warcraft III
6:00 AM | Daniel Bogan | Comment on this story

Gamespot has written up a full review of the just-released strategy game, Warcraft III: Reign Of Chaos, dismissing the game as a "role playing strategy" and instead seeing it as a pure sequel to Warcraft II with extra niceties.

Make no mistake: Warcraft III is a real-time strategy game. Originally announced back in 1999 as a hybrid strategic role-playing game, over the course of its development, Warcraft III shed many of its role-playing pretensions and became what by all means is a true sequel to its predecessor. The game relies on many of the real-time strategy conventions you're probably familiar with by now. The goal of a typical skirmish is to start gathering resources (gold and wood), build up a base, build up a force of various units, and use that force to destroy the enemy's base and to repel any attacks against your position.
The reviewer goes on to give the game 9.3 out of 10, and has included a swag of nice screenshots to salivate over while you wait for your copy in the mail.

Be on the lookout for IMG's very own review soon. WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos is available for purchase from the IMG Store.
