MacPlay Reveals Fallout 2

Mac game publisher MacPlay today announced that it will be bringing Fallout 2 to the Macintosh. The title will be available in limited quantities at the upcoming Macworld New York expo. For those unfamiliar with the game, Fallout 2 is an RPG, originally produced by Black Isle Studios, set in a post-apocalyptic future that gives players the goal of finding the Garden of Eden Creation Kit admist a sea of radioactive fallout, mutants, and treachery.
Henry Price, Director of Sales and Marketing, offered some comments regarding the early availability of Fallout 2:
We are very excited to bring Fallout 2 to the Mac platform. Our programmers and staff have worked extra hard to ensure that the product will be available in limited quantities at Macworld New York. I am amazed with the level of excitement surrounding the anticipated release of the product, but it just proves that Fallout 2 is a great classic game.Those lucky enough to be attending Macworld NY will be able to pick up a copy of Fallout 2 at the MacPlay booth from July 17-19 for the retail price of $29.99. The official release date is currently slated for July 31, 2002.

Dialup Version Of Myst Online?

The fan site Riven Unofficial Home Page quotes Cyan CEO Rand Miller as saying a possibility exists for dial-up users to play their upcoming massively multiplayer online title, Myst Online. Miller notes that, "Cyan is looking into the possibility of a dialup version of Myst Online for players who don't have broadband."
More explanation is found on the site:
An article at a French web site quoted Rand as saying, "It's necessary to try to make the game available to the surfers who have slow modems. Some parts of the game work well on narrow bandwidth." A second article -- this one at RedHerring.com -- seemed to confirm the possibility of a dialup version. The article said, "In order to attract the largest possible number of players, the game will also support text messages and more limited voice communication over a modem."But Cyan's Richard Watson downplays the possibility of 56k support. Recently he was quoted as saying, "Broadband is where we're headed. If we are able to provide a subset of the experience to people without broadband then that would be a nice added bonus, but that is not our focus." GameRanger 3.0 Preview 4 Released

GameRanger, the Mac-only online gaming portal software has been updated to Preview 4. The following features have been added:
- Game room pings automatically refresh
- Pings and server queries will now work after an internet connection is re-established
- Restored standard Cmd-M for minimize
- Added tooltips/helptags to large/small icon buttons in game view
- Worked around some Myth TFL bugs

Elite Force 2 Preview at Gamers.com

Gamers.com has posted a brief preview of Ritual Entertainment's upcoming title, Star Trek: Elite Force 2, the latest game in the extended franchise. The author of the preview points out that, though many Star Trek based games are not of the highest quality, EF2 should live up to the good reputation of its predecessor.
Elite Force 2 will differ from the first go 'round in several key areas. In this installment, the "Voyager" name has been dropped from the title, as the game now takes place after the conclusion of that TV series. Players will find themselves spending time at Starfleet Academy before serving aboard the USS Enterprise E, under the command of none other than Captain Jean-Luc Picard himself.
Some of the more significant improvements in EF2 are discussed in the preview. Here's a sample:
If things go according to plan, team AI will be much improved over the previous game. You'll have some new and better weapons to give team members, as well as a beefed-up tricorder that will give you all kinds of nifty battlefield info. It's a short preview, but an interesting one. The plot has also seen some big changes. Instead of being purely linear, the story will branch out at key points. You'll have certain choices when it comes to how you pass through an area or beat an enemy, and losing teammates will also have an effect on future developments.

Apple's Checks Out Max Payne

Apple has a detailed look at Max Payne at their website today. It runs through the high points of the game, the dramatic story and setting, bullet time, photorealistic graphics, and includes interviews with the developers of the game. The developers also had something to say about the Macintosh as a gaming platform.
Lehtinen is the person at Remedy who worked with Westlake Interactive on the Macintosh version of the game, and he says he's glad that. Apple has gone to great lengths to make the Mac a good platform for games. I have every reason to believe that in the future we will see the best games be published on the Mac and they will be great."Links to a second page detailing the assorted weaponry of Max Payne, cheat codes, and system requirements can be found at the bottom of the article.
So after a year of waiting Max Payne will soon be doing his infamous, dual pistol blazing bullet timed death dive on to the Macintosh. As the slogan on Apple's website says "He's a rock-solid hero, for a rock-solid OS."

BongoBoogie Announced for Mac

Phelios contacted IMG recently to announce a new game under development called, BongoBoogie. The 2D remake of the classic Arkanoid will use OpenGL and looks to feature primates as prominant characters. Although no web site is yet available, there is a splash page up to show the quality of the graphics work, as well as a short description:
A dazzling game with beautiful graphics and music, featuring monkeys that have gone... bananas! More than 200 fun levels to entertain you for hours.According to Phelios' Patrice Krysztofiak, they are planning for an August release and have a great majority of the art completed. DOWN Sees Release

DOWN, a joint shareware project between Jelly and Fantasoft, has recently reached Released status and is now available for purchase. For those unfamiliar with the title, DOWN is an action/adventure title, with a look similar to Diablo II, that boasts OpenGL-native graphics and some very curious-looking beasties for players to encounter.
Some of the features include the following:
- 16 chapters.The system requirements are quite reasonable, with the listing including a G3, 64MB RAM, an OpenGL capable graphics card, and 600MB of HD space.
- 7 individual atmospheric regions.
- 10 monster classes will cross your path. Some may aid you while others may try to slay you.
- fight for, find, buy, use and sell the following items:
- Pulsars: Cause the ground to tremble and help find your way to remote locations.
- Potions: Restore a portion of your health.
- Shooters: Allow you to blast your enemies.
- Keys: Make barriers disappear.
- Bodyswappers: Possess nearby creatures. Acquire their looks, energy and strength.
- Matter Melters: Can unite several items into something even more powerful.
- Messages: Provide hints about the chapter you're in.
- Maps: View the surroundings through an eagle's eye.

New Bugdom 2 Shots Posted

Pangea Software has posted new screenshots of their current project Bugdom 2. The title is a sequel to Bugdom, the hit game bundled on a number of Apple machines. The same colourful cartoon style of graphics has again been used, but made even more impressive with the aid of more substantial 3D processors.
We are currently hard at work creating Bugdom 2, the much anticipated sequel to Bugdom which was originally released in 1999. Bugdom 2 should be done in time for Christmas 2002. We don't want to give too much away since we're still a long way from completion... We are anticipating that the system requirements for Bugdom 2 will be very similar to those for our most recent game, Otto Matic, and yes, the game will run great on both MacOS 9 and MacOS X.Check out these shots by following the link below, and if you want further information also read through the IMG preview of the game.

pop-pop Goes Gold Master

Ambrosia Software has announced their long awaited arcade game pop-pop is now gold master. The Arkanoid/Anime title is set for a release at Macworld New York on July 17. The game's features include fast-paced action, OS X compatibility, and internet play with support for GameRanger. In what will likely be the last progress log update, project lead PopWrangler lets us know what the next few weeks will cover:
But really the pop work isn't over yet. I have to design a banner for the show booth. I have to design pop-pop trading cards (which you can collect at the show). I have to design a t-shirt or two... Fortunately doing the art is fun. Drawings don't crash. No compiler complains if your lines don't connect. The end result is immediately appreciable by your non-techie friends and family. And I get a t-shirt. T-Shirts rock.Be on the lookout for a demo of pop-pop on the 17th and read through IMG's preview of the game if you haven't yet done so.
