IMG's Tuncer on The Gamesome Mac Tonight

Tonight on The Gamesome Mac, the weekly Mac gaming radio show, host Sean Smith and producer Andy Largent will be talking with Tuncer Deniz, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Inside Mac Games, about his long career in Mac gaming and his unique perspective on the Macintosh games industry.

Their conversation will range over the history of IMG, Tuncer's stint at Bungie as producer of Myth II: Soulblighter, and the evolution and current state of the Mac games industry.

And, as they do every week, Sean and Andy will serve up news, reviews, and commentary in their inimitable style, take questions from listeners, and give away some great prizes to listeners in the show's live chat room.

The Gamesome Mac can be heard on Mondays from 8 to 10 pm Central Time (6 pm Pacific; 9 pm Eastern; and Tuesday, 01:00 UTC) on the MacTV Network. MacHall Explores Incentives to Shareware Registration

Today in Mac Hall, IMG's resident comic artists, take a break from playing EV Nova to explore incentives to shareware registration in a comic entitled, "It's for You":

I've been along for the ride for all the Escape Velocity games. Ambrosia makes a slew of great products, and the EV line is the jewel of the lot.

Nova stuck me to my computer like glue, marring an already unimpressive academic career. It's one of those games whose quality you can rate in direct proportion to how far your grades drop.

The icing on the cake, of course, is the fact that it's a Mac exclusive.

Warcraft III Figurines Available

Gamers who just can't get enough Warcraft III in their lives may be interested in some items on which Blizzard Entertainment is currently working. Set to be released around the time the game itself hits the market, three action figures directly based on Warcraft III are also planning, with one representative each from the Human, Orc, and Night Elf races.

Gaming site GameSpot was given an exclusive look at these figures, along with information on each:

The company has three action figures currently planned: the orcish war chief Thrall, the dwarven mountain king Muradin Bronzebeard, and night elf keeper of the grove, Furion Stormrage. The plastic figures will be about six inches tall, will have removable weapons, and should retail for about $10 each.

Shadowbane: What Makes It Different?

Known for having one heck of a development schedule, Shadowbane, an upcoming massively-multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) by Wolfpack Studios, has had fans of the genre wildly speculating as to its gameplay and chances for success.

In a recent Q&A session with HomeLAN Fed, John Billington, Director of Marketing for Ubi Soft (publishers of Shadowbane), took the time to answer questions and concerns regarding both current and future plans for the success of Shadowbane.

One of the main details that Billington hopes will make Shadowbane successful is the fact that player input will be the true deciding factor in play. Players will have a great degree of control over the environment, and may actually wield the power to shape the world itself depending on given circumstances.

When asked point-blank about the new features Shadowbane might bring to the MMORPG world, Billington lists three main points:

  • Shadowbane is the first MMO [game] to offer a Dynamic World Model which allows players to physically change the terrain, politics, and history of the game as it evolves over time.
  • Shadowbane combines role playing elements with strategic elements to allow building ownership, city management, army creation, siege warfare, and economic development.
  • Shadowbane is re-inventing PvP as people know of it in other games by providing player accountability tools. These include a grief log, kill on site list, bounty hunters, no anonymity, and a player locator.

As many people anticipating this game are aware, PvP (player vs player) combat, usually seen as a detriment to most other games in the genre, is actually one of the mainstays of the Shadowbane world.

Vendetta Test Released for OS X

Last fall, IMG reported on a new 3D space title from Guild Software coming to Mac OS X called Vendetta. The plan is for Vendetta eventually to be a very open-ended, massively multiplayer online game, allowing players to create their own personalities as space captains. While the full game is still a ways off, Guild Software has decided to release a test version with basic deathmatch and capture-the-flag features to begin working out networking and gameplay issues.

To try out the Vendetta test for OS X, players will first need to create an account and download an auto-updating client that will then grab the necessary 30 MB of files. System requirements for the OS X version follow:

  • An Apple G3 or G4 based system (desktop, iMac, or laptop)
  • 128 MB of system ram
  • A 16 MB 3D-accelerating video card (or better)
  • Mac OS X (the game *does not run* on Mac OS 9)

If you meet these requirements and are interested in testing the game and reporting your findings, head over now to the Vendetta site to create an account and download the client. Stay tuned to IMG for more info as development on the game progresses.

Custer's Nova Desktop

This week, IMG's resident artist, Brad Custer, brings us a desktop picture for EV Nova, the latest game in the venerable Escape Velocity Series from Ambrosia Software and ATMOS:

I've gotten a few requests over the years to do a desktop for an Ambrosia Software title. Recently, I decided to try and honor the numerous requests. This week I happened to have an open slot so the timing seemed perfect. I was pleased to discover on one of my art CDs an "Ambrosia Folder" that contained artwork for Escape Velocity: Nova. This week's creation is titled, "Adversaries," and features the classic battle scene associated with the game. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it. :)
