This is awesome news! Thanks DI, Aspyr, and EA!

i am giving all the Credit this year
Mark March 26 - 9:08 AM

i am giving all the Credit this year to Aspyr for really bringing our small platform Kick ass games.
They have the best game selection this year in aspyrs history.

@Kevin
Andreas Weik March 26 - 8:12 AM

the problem here is, that Macs have such a low marketshare, that we're not even on the PC game developers/publishers radar!

It's up to the good folks at Aspyr and other Mac publishers to make them aware of the fact that there is money to be made in the Mac gaming market. But that market is still VERY much smaller than the PC market.

Mac gamers will have to accept that. And we can be grateful for the fact that the situation is much better than it used to be.

-Andreas.

Why didn't they just make it cross platform from the start?
Kevin March 26 - 7:28 AM

Don't get me wrong, i am greatful that we now get to play this game.

This is an example that the Macintosh is an after thought!

but, they still thought about the Mac!

This is just the begining, sooner or later devlopers will make cross platform games fron the get go. I just hope they see it like we do.

Mac Fool March 26 - 6:12 AM

You can control Naval assets in this game? Now that is cool!

Great Move!
Andreas Weik March 26 - 4:48 AM

Although I don't know much about the game, I really congratulate Aspyr for pulling off this one. You guys and gals just rock! I said it before, and I say it again.

Thanx also to Dice for caving in. :-)

I think now is the time to hit those PC websites to get sum' decent info on this game.

Greetz, Andreas.

almost woot March 25 - 10:11 PM

She said working on it, not that it was supported. They worked on Command & Conquer for four months but couldn't get the PC - Mac to work. Working on it doesn't mean the same as it actually works.

good grief
klm March 25 - 9:09 PM

get some info before you complain ...

in the forums Glenda has already stated they have been working on Mac-PC networking and using existing mods.

almost woot March 25 - 8:55 PM

Hopefully it will support PC-Mac networking, otherwise I'll have to pass on this one. If it supports it, WAHOOO!!

THANK YOU ASPYR/Glenda!
King Arthur March 25 - 8:43 PM

Thank you for continuing to go after Dice. And thank you to Dice for giving in! I have this game for my PC but will definately buy it for Mac too. A lot of my Mac only pals were always upset they couldn't also play with me online.
This is not too late! BF1942 is a very popular game still. Plus all the MODs that are being made (some are alphas & betas) will only increase BF1942s lifespan. Heck I hope this kills WW2 Recon in Myth 2! It was great back in 1999. :P Now it is dated.
I've played BF Vietnam & it isn't worth buying right now maybe wait until more maps & bugs are fixed.

Complaining
NAG March 25 - 7:29 PM

In this case I hope it is just a vocal minority.

Really, now...
Galen (IMG) March 25 - 6:55 PM

I am appalled at the ingratitude of some of you guys. BF1942 was one of the most anticipated Mac ports of all time, and now when the announcement is finally made, you have nothing better to say than "been there, done that"?

I know its tough being the underdog, you you have to be grateful for what you got. This is a HUGE success for Aspyr as far as I'm concerned, and hopefully it'll pave the way to even more great games.

And don't think that the game is old news. There are literally thousands of players online at any one moment, and mods such as Desert Combat are enough to keep the game enjoyable for years on end.

this
Mark March 25 - 5:45 PM

right this game aint gonna role if the Maccers can't play with their PC using friends.

i really hope Aspyr figures the whole online Crapphola out. because let's be honest porting windows online networking is a nightmare.
Microsoft needs to do something about this issue and FAST.
They are just keeping their monopoly in tact by excluding other platforms.

joblow March 25 - 5:33 PM

If this is mac-only multi, it's not even worth the effort.

!?
alksdj March 25 - 4:57 PM

Are we gonna be able to play this online with PC users? Cuz if not I'm not getting it.

Free Vietnam mod
Pyl March 25 - 4:48 PM

There is already an excellent Vietnam mod for BF1942, called Eve of Destruction. No need to feel left out without Battlefield Vietnam.

The Star Wars mod, Galactic Conquest, is also quite fun.

The fact that it's an older game also means it doesn't require the latest and greatest computer to run it. I'm looking forward to seeing how this runs on my iBook.

Finally we'll be getting a really good cross platform realistic weapon FPS game!

YESSSSSSS
Bubba March 25 - 4:09 PM

OH MY GOD. Tell me I'm not seeing things.

This is the best news to come to Mac gaming in YEARS. Kudos to Aspyr and get me ready to whip out the plastic.

(Now if only they'd port IL-2 Sturmovik and Forgotton Battles....but I guess a good flight sim is too much to ask.)

Still, YEEEEEE HAAAAWWWW

bubs

Niiiice
SirRobHiFi March 25 - 3:22 PM

This is great news.

I still play SOF2 more than anything else though, the gameplay is fantastic.

BF1942 thrives
Steephill March 25 - 3:10 PM

Look at Digitals homepage. The game was released in september 2002. upto end of:
- january 2003, 1 millio copies sold.
- october 2003 2 million copies sold.
- march 2004 3millions copies sold.

Digital count with a Mac sale between 50.000 to 200.000. And if the game sells well we get more from where that came:) I think the Mac version will do slightly more than 100.000 first year and 200.000 copies in 2 years.

... March 25 - 2:18 PM

Will there be gamepad support? I can't imagine flying a plane with the keyboard. The PC version supports all types of HID devices.

Latest Game Spy numbers
FuMacFu March 25 - 2:01 PM

1. Half-Life: 32616 servers, 77591 players
2. Call of Duty : 3356 servers, 9556 players
3. Battlefield: Vietnam : 1980 servers, 8291 players
4. Battlefield 1942 : 2700 servers, 7955 players

Looks to me like there's still some life in the old beast yet. :-)

don't wait for vietnam
klm March 25 - 1:54 PM

my opinion and the general concensus is that although it's quite fun (but full of early bugs and gameplay issues) it's not as entertaining as 1942. The style is different (no bombers, battleships etc) so I doubt anyone will be abandoning 1942 any time soon.

If BFV comes out for the Mac you'll be glad you waited until it was refined.

LordViking March 25 - 12:27 PM

SWEET!

Bill March 25 - 12:19 PM

This game is fun and I'll be picking it up but in a sense it may actually be too late. Yeah I know it's not Aspyr's fault but that won't change reality. With the release of Battlefield Vietnam and an improved engine many of the pc players and mods are going to be migrating. I hope we don't get left behind. It will still be fun even if it is only the mac users and some pc stragglers.

Haberdasher March 25 - 12:04 PM

Yay!

Sweet
Toc March 25 - 12:00 PM

I bought this game for my PC and it's awesome, I'm not sure how well it will run on Mac's though.

Desert Combat is another reason to get this game.

There are literally hundreds of players online at any given time.

Any news on Battlefield Vietnam?

great game
klm March 25 - 12:00 PM

Glenda already mentioned in the forums that Desert Combat was in their minds when they did the porting.

This is still as popular now as it was last year. It's a MP game that has not been replicated in any other form yet so if you like FPS online and don't pick this up you'll be missing a great time.

Two items
Lectrick March 25 - 11:43 AM

1) I heard that this game was not coded with an eye to cross-platform development and therefore is a more difficult porting task. Hence the delay.

2) If the Desert Combat .exe just installs a bunch of files, all you have to do is run it on windows, do a file search for the most-recently-added files, note all the ones added by the .exe, and repackage them into a Mac installer. relax, people...

can't friggin wait for this game. i'm slated for the next round of G5's ;)

kmn140 March 25 - 11:37 AM

Desert Combat would probably work client-side, but does it require platform specific server-libs? Like for Quake 2? The DC website shows separate linux and windows server files. Just wondering. If they can get DC to work (client and server), I'm definitely buying it. Aspyr should bundle xpacks for all its games... *nudge nudge* zero hour *nudge nudge*

forget the naysayers, they suck balls
dood March 25 - 11:29 AM

Yeah, now I can throw my PC up for sale on ebay and never look back. Everything else is so much better on the G5 - now that I can play Battlefield, I'm going 100% Mac G5. No spyware, virii, or script kiddies for me.

????
Mac Fool March 25 - 11:17 AM

Is this a MMOG (Persistant world) or a LAN game?

I've heard interesting things about this title but never really looked into it as it was only for PC's.

BTW, when is FFXI coming to the Mac? :D

KOTOR is coming too
Mac Game Insider News Guy March 25 - 11:00 AM

I can't remember the Mac news website that posted this info a while back. But before they went under, they had confirmed news that this game and KOTOR were on the way. That's one down, one announcement to go!

MCP March 25 - 10:37 AM

I don't understand this "too late" attitude. Is it too late for Star Wars to be coming out on DVD?

Its the best upcoming game for Mac (with Call of Duty and Doom 3)

mcp March 25 - 10:35 AM

"too (censored) late

WSTE_M
March 25 - 7:14 AM

sorry, I would have bought it a year ago, but now, im looking for some other games."

Yeah, right... Like what? The latest Tomb Raider?

Battlefield 1942
Riktexan March 25 - 10:24 AM

Seems like, in order to get the additional programs and features we're saying we want, we need to buy this Mac edition of B42 to prove there are enough of us to justify doing more.
I'm going to get it for that reason AND the fun.

Desert Combat .exe
Tuncer Deniz (IMG) March 25 - 10:19 AM

The .exe is for the Windows setup program that installs all the files. Desert Combat itself does not have a custom made application. So, yes, it would have to be repacked in .sit format or something to work.

Desert combat
Zulu 5 March 25 - 10:00 AM

yes. i have a PC that i built solely to play DesertCombat, i am fully aware of how addicting it is.

Zulu_5
Desert Combat March 25 - 10:00 AM

ok my only question then to you is: does Aspyr have a deal with Trauma Studios to port their game.

DesertCombat is a 600mb .exe file someone is gonna need to do something about that.

From what i understand Aspyr is porting BF and R2R. Desert Combat runs on this engine but has it own unique characteristics and such.

Desert Combat
Tuncer Deniz (IMG) March 25 - 9:50 AM

Desert Combat is a mod and thus wouldn't have to be "ported". Like UT, Quake III mods, etc, it should just work. Glenda told me they plan on supporting all the mods.

I can't emphasize enough the coolness of Desert Combat. Check it out at www.desertcombat.com

desert combat
Zulu_5 March 25 - 9:32 AM

the only reason to buy BF:1942 is for the free version of DesertCombat which is developed by Trauma Studios......don't expect a port for this anytime soon if at all.

Mac users better have a respectable video card if they plan on enjoying this game.

Already Alpha
Mark March 25 - 9:21 AM

it is already in Alpha.

OOOOOOOOOOOW YEAH
skully25 March 25 - 9:16 AM

man, iv been waiting ages for this game to get ported, played it on pc a couple of times, the real reason to buy this game is when you get the desert combat mod if you like modern warfare (http://www.desertcombat.com/ ) i really hope they will convert the mod for mac,

i'm already thankfull to aspyr to port this game, but i really would like not to have any performance issues when its released
not that it will matter much cause im hoping to get a G5 really soon

but once again, thanks to the ppl who are gonna port this game

good stuff
Narles March 25 - 9:16 AM

This is a very popular game and is tons of fun to play. I wonder if we'll be getting Battlefield Vietnam now...

Hey, non-inflated sys reqs!
rufwork March 25 - 9:12 AM

Let's take a look...

OS X:
PowerPC G3/G4/G5, 700 MHz or faster
256MB of RAM

From ebstore for Windows:
500 MHz Intel Pentium III
128 MB RAM

... if you combine this with reports that the PC version really doesn't run worth spit without 256 megs of RAM, this is quite a feat. Can you buy an x86 with Windows that matches those for less than a 700 MHz Mac? Sure, but this isn't nearly as bad as in the past.

Compare to NASCAR 2002 where you needed a 733 G4 to replace a 450 MHz Pentium II. Now a 700 MHz *G3* makes the cut for a 500 MHz P3. I realize that this might just be a nicer codebase, but ultimately who cares? It's nice to see reasonable sys reqs.

Let's just hope this isn't another Sin or Quake 2, though, where meeting the min sys reqs meant the game ran on your box, but couldn't really be played.

kmn March 25 - 9:06 AM

Eeh. Vehicle integration and map scale is quite good, but the WW2 infantry system sucks. Infantry weapon damage is not as realistic (it can take multiple direct hits to down someone with the scoped rifles).

And try this!... In the naval maps, whip out your trusty wrench and start repairing your ship! Very amusing :).

If you haven't played it before, it can be quite fun, but make sure you have a lot of people playing, especially on the larger sea maps. At least they'll be able to incorporate the patches, as it was pretty buggy back when I played it on the lans.

Late, are you kidding?
Duane Johnson March 25 - 9:02 AM

I guess machineman knows nothing about the porting process. I've had the "privilege" of working on one game that was supposed to be a simultaneous release, Halo.

We started getting code around late alpha, and with each new code drop till the last one (that'd be about 12 of them) we would have to throw away anywhere from a week to a months worth of work. And, depending on how quickly Gearbox/MS actually got the code to us, sometimes we were working a month out of sync + the lost month. And we were doing 80+ hours a week.

Unless the game is being done for all platforms by the same company, or the PC publisher is going to hold up releasing the PC title, simultaneous releases are not going to happen.

Duane

yah!
jj March 25 - 8:53 AM

finally. i. can. play. on. my. mac.

Kudos to Aspyr. I go to my local LAN gaming cafe here in portland because it's one of the best multiplayer games ever. yeah, better than mohaa.

of course, call of duty is coming out also, no?

sorry, backspace!

Re: Late
Tuncer (IMG) March 25 - 8:45 AM

Don't blame Aspyr....they've been trying to get BF 1942 since it came out. DICE was the company that didn't want their code to be given out.

So give credit to Aspyr for persuing it until DICE said yes.

Late
machineman March 25 - 8:38 AM

I guess what I mean to say is, I know the game is awesome... but, if they are going to release a game for the Mac, why not, just once, try to get it out at the same time as the PC, if for nothing else to take care of all of the marketing dollars that are going toward that version, and stick a little Mac icon right next to the PC, Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube icons!

This would do two things:

1) notify more mainstram mac users that dont follow the latest news that the game will exist for the Mac. As it is, when a game comes out, they check if it's available for the Mac. If not chances are they won't check it out again later. They will never know.

2) simply alert gamers that the Mac is a viable gaming machines... they would see it in all of the current promotion for current games, making the Mac maybe more of a real choice for them, if they know the games would be available.

Someone needs to think outside the box, JUST ONCE! And the exception to this is Blizzard... they already do this, and look at the benefits they've reaped.

Great!!!!!
Falcon1 March 25 - 8:26 AM

This is superb! BF1942 is such a huge online game on pcs... played it once on a mates pc and it was great fun.

Cheers Aspyr! You rock!!

FuMacFu March 25 - 7:55 AM

Glenda actually let the cat out of the bag a while back when she mentioned a game that they were going to be able to bring to Mac because of the code security now possible with the in-house poting team.

GREAT NEWS - years from now when people are still playing this, the delay will be irrelevant. Remember, Half Life is still popular.

Cool!
Pixel Pusher 208 March 25 - 7:42 AM

Awsome news. Desert Combat will be great on the MAC.

Now I will not need a PC... well until Half-Life 2, Stalker, and maybe Tribes 3...

oh and If anyone will port out RTCW:ET...

Whoa
NAG March 25 - 7:34 AM

I am sort of wondering where this came from and how long they have been sitting on this news.

yippee!
hooray March 25 - 7:34 AM

its coming its coming its coming to mac!

jeez you people are so angry, i'm just happy to finally be able to play it for longer then half an hour.

Too late?
Tuncer (IMG) March 25 - 7:16 AM

BF 1942 is STILL one of the most popular games on the Internet. Desert Combat alone is worth this port. Go check out my preview and check out the Desert Combat movie.

Folks, if you think it's too late, you're going to miss out on a game that is still frickin incredible.

too (censored) late
WSTE_M March 25 - 7:14 AM

sorry, I would have bought it a year ago, but now, im looking for some other games.

Why so long??
machineman March 25 - 7:12 AM

Once again, Mac users are shafted...

Why don't these game publishers take advantage of all of the marketing and hype that would go with a cross-platform release? When will they learn?

OMG
omg March 25 - 7:01 AM

WAY TO GO ASPYR.

You guys are kicking some serious ass. Fantastic news. Yet another reason why you are the #1 Mac games company.

Yes!
RefinedSugar March 25 - 7:00 AM

Finally, I'm in before the lock. Oh wait,... I guess this news will make a lot of people happy.
