| The Ho! 5.0 -vs- MOO3 |

I bought, played, & enjoyed both MOO2 and The Ho! 4.0. They are thematically similar but are quite different in terms of implementation and focus.
MOO has (in my opinion) generally been the deeper game with much more mythology about it & a clearer focus on the solo game. The Ho! is one of those "easy to learn but a lifetime to master" games with a very shallow learning curve perfect for casual gamers ... a kind of freecell of galactic conquest. The Ho! has also been a blast at LAN parties.
Now that The Ho! 5.0 supports Internet play *and* is OS X-native I find it a no brainer ... I bought my copy already (& one for my wife for Christmas)! The game isn't free, but a mature well-built program is always worth the investment for me.
I'll probably also buy MOO3 when it is released ... even though I will play The Ho! more often (since a "quick" MOO game will always be quite a bit longer than a "quick" game of The Ho!).
But I realize that not all gamers have the resources to purchase every game they kinda like. So it comes down to the playability. The good news is a demo of The Ho! 5.0 can be had at: . Perhaps a MOO3 demo for the Mac is possible as well.
If you love it, but it. If you don't love it, don't buy it. If you can't afford it, play it at a friend's house! :-)

This is one of three games I am waiting for in 2003. It's very exciting!
(I wonder how Spaceward Ho will fare in light of MOO3. I liked Spaceward Ho, but when I looked at its Store Bought price and compared its features to MOO3, I just couldn't buy it.) |
