If Apple is abandoning Sprockets ... which they are in MacOS X, then they need a gaming API anyway. Open GL is a graphics API (and a fairly good one) but it doesn't cover the field. Ditto for Glide ... way fast frame rate and way cool features, but it's not a gaming API. DirectX on the other hand does have the bases covered ... and its got better with each new version MS has put out. I currently have DirectX 7.0a on my DOS box, and it handles pretty well any calls you'd need on a gaming API. So ... should Apple go for DirectX? Well, if they haven't got a gaming API of their own then there are worse ones to consider. |

These are other Microsoft games that this deal would potentially involve. I don't know about you, but it beats Links hands down in my book!? |

This is a huge deal! Microsoft finally broke down the wall that has for so long separated the Mac and PC gaming communities. Once other companies see how succesful Microsoft will become when they sell there Mac versions of their games, they will follow. The domino effect will take place and soon the Mac and PC gaming communities will become one. This is a huge step, it will still take some time, but Apple made a good move and I'm surprised at Microsoft for making this move, but they won't regret it. Now all I need is for Bill Gates to die of a heart attack and I can die a happy man! |

Actually, some programmer at Contraband Entertainment got DirectPlay working on a Mac.

The idea that Microsoft would abandon DirectX and DirectPlay, technologies they have spent millions of dollars to develop over the last 5 years, for open standards seems... Unlikely. |

I agree...Direct X is not something that I want to have to use. However, it would make porting some older games a lot easier. Hopefully Apple can get MS to start using open source standards(like OpenGL) for new titles though. |

"During the keynote, Microsoft games geek Ed Fries mentioned several specific titles that will come to the Mac OS - Age of Empires II, Links LS 2002 (a golf game), and NFL Fever 2001. There is even a possibility, although this has not been confirmed, that some older titles may make their way to the Mac, such as the popular Age of Kings and the ancient-but-still-going MS Flight Simulator."
Age of Empires II and Age of Kings are the same game. The error in the news story was most likely typographical in nature, but this is still worth noting.

You don't want Direct X....or active X or any such thing. For one thing Direct 3D is based on OpenGL. So why should I have a bastardized, less featured graphic protocol? DirectPlay...doesn't really matter to most gamers I know. The answer is for MS to adopt multi-platform solutions like open sound, open play, and OpenGL. Just my two cents. |
