The short answer is, "No." The only time that the Sprockets that you have installed under Mac OS 9.1 will function is when you are running an app under the Classic environment.
However, there are other paths to achieve the same, or ultimately better, functionality that Input and DrawSprockets (which IS carbonized in a limited fashion) provide under the classic Mac OS. HID Manager for input services. Core Graphics for screen handling. If you feel the need to mix and match Carbon and Cocoa, then you can take that path. This will require game developers (and developers of other types of apps. Everyone has some sort of migration path to support Mac OS X) to create either separate code paths or separate Mac OS X specific applications. Not the most fun thing in the world, but part of life as a developer of any sort of software for the Macintosh. The effort pays off in providing the best experience for our customers.
Don't think that Windows developers don't have to experience some pain and effort to make sure that their games run on the different flavors of Microsoft's OS's.
Macintosh software developers are on the way to adopting Mac OS X. It's a rocky road, but will ultimately be well worth the trip. The best thing that users can do is to make the trip over to Mac OS X as quickly as it makes sense for them. We'll be trying hard to make it make sense for you.

A lot of current games are dependant on Input/Draw Sprockets. A lot of games won't even run if these technologies aren't available. So how ARE developers going to provide input device support once carbonized? Far as I know, we heard a marketing message that all will be taken care of.. yet there doesn't seem to be ANY infromation about HOW we are going to be "taken care of."
So the rally big quesion is "can you install the suite of Sprockets into the 9.1 installation and have then function when running under X?" |
