ABigSmall March 01 - 10:16 PM

Unfortunately for games, the CPU will top out then.

Narles February 28 - 7:37 AM

You can buy a retail Radeon 9800 for any PowerMac G4 Mirror Door. Those went as low as 866 MHz, I think.

ABigSmall February 27 - 9:43 PM

If you have a graphics card that's older than a Radeon 9600 and Nvidia 5200, is your system at least 1.5 Ghz G4/G5? I don't know about you, but I don't think so.

iMac DOOM Special Edition
Hamish February 27 - 9:34 PM

OK Apple, now bring on the iMac 20" DOOM3 Special Edition, with 128Meg VRAM and at least an ATI 9600XT or NVidia 6200 card. Or pehaps even a 256 Meg ATI 800XT!

just a thought for those that hate doom3 (the game)

Need help
Nookster February 26 - 10:15 AM

My games developer has developed a problem, it can't make Mac games anymore (it used to, so something's not right), so I boxed it up, and took to the the shop, and guy said that my "Graeme Devine™" was missing.

How much do one of those cost nowadays? Are they fiddly to install? According to Bare Feats, just one of these installed made QIII run really fast, that got my attention.

I asked the guy if buying a faster one would help, he said I could give it a shot, but without a "Graeme Devine™" to, "handle the code" (whatever that means), I'm never going to get the most out it.

Thanks in advance.

happywhoosit February 26 - 6:50 AM

PC Doom3 can run on:
6 year old computer
5 year old os (Windows 2000)
video card: whichever is oldest; GeForce3 or ATI Radeon 8500

Mac needs (if I'm right):
2 year old computer
1 year old(?) OSX 10.3 with new 10.3.8 update
ATI Radeon 9600 (don't know when it came out -- 1.5 years ago?)

Doom3 can run on pretty old PC but needs almost new Mac and hardware. Strange.

Stop your Doom3 cryingg
Spock February 26 - 6:07 AM

Come on Folks Aspyr cant wave a magic wand and all of a sudden Doom3 runs great on a old G4. A fast G4 isnt the problem, Apple is using Cheap, and cheaper video in every product. Its about the GPu's and just face it Apple is using Cheapo and old Fx5200s and 9200s. Those cheapo graphics aint going to run Doom3 period. Its time for a mass mail in campaign to Apple to upgrade video in every machine. FX5200 is a discrace for the cadillac of computing. Inside Mac games and others should be hitting Apple Hard on its Poor GPU's!

tactus February 26 - 2:55 AM

"Except for processor, most Mac requirements are higher."
If it said Pentium-M, I would've agree but..

Demo before I buy...
CockneyGeezer February 26 - 2:27 AM

Aspyr, a demo for this game would a good idea, to make sure that the game fairly well on my PowerBook. I am not shelling out £35 for a game that won't perform that well, even with the graphics settings all the way down.

Any news on the demo Glenda?

Machine spec: PB 15.2" G4 1.5GHz, 2GB RAM, 128MB VRAM, 5.4K HD, SuperDrive

Disc February 26 - 2:02 AM

Aspyr lets just hope you optimized for the G4/G5
chips and squeezed everything possible from
the CPUs. Also going to be intresting with my
6800GT to see how it handles Doom3.

happywhoosit February 26 - 1:53 AM

"On par with PC version"? Not hardly.
PC mininum:
ATI Radeon 8500
Nvidia GeForce3
Pentium® IV 1.5 GHz or Athlon® XP 1500+ processor or higher
384MB RAM

Mac mininum:
ATI Radeon 9600
Nvidia GeForce FX5200
CPU: CPU Speed: 1.5GHz or faster
512 mb ram

Except for processor, most Mac requirements are higher.

tactus February 26 - 12:16 AM

167 MHz short. Oh well. :´( I guess I could buy a three year old silly box (or upgrade the one I already have) for cheap to meet within the minimum if I really wants to. More optimalisation would've been in place, but I guess Aspyr have to get this out the door if they want to earn anything.

sure ...
klm February 26 - 12:13 AM

you could take out everything that makes Doom 3 the game it is to run it on lower end Macs, but that would be defeating the point of having it in the first place.

The price for how it looks is high system requirements. As Calroth said below these specs are on par with PC requirements.

Apple short change the low end Macs and try to pass them off as suitable gaming machines. If you buy an iMac you are going to hit the performance wall pretty quickly with the latest games there's nothing you or Aspyr can do about it.

The alternative is that Apsyr work on the code for longer to make it run on a 1.25Ghz G4 iMac et al. They lose money, you have to wait even longer to play it and the end result isn't pretty.

For what it's worth I wouldn't even bother to play any of the latest games on a 64MB video card, unless you want to kill the whole experience.

Calroth February 25 - 10:00 PM

"I think you should take a moment to consider what you actually said."

Considered. Position remains unchanged.

"how silly.. by PC standards thats like saying the latest model p4's only just run the game...."

True. Also by PC standards, Macs are underpowered. There's no magic button to press labelled "Make this game run on underpowered Mac hardware".

Time to retire, again?
Riko February 25 - 8:29 PM

So my 1 GB windtunnel finally bites the dust.

I upgraded my mac's several times just to be able
to play games the older machines couldn't handle,
like Unreal and RtCW. But I don't know about this one though, a demo of some sorts, even unplayable on my rig would be nice.

insane
apple_dude February 25 - 7:23 PM

wow look at thos emin requirements. I just bought a latest model 1.8ghz iMac and it only just barley scrapes in....

how silly.. by PC standards thats like saying the latest model p4's only just run the game....

Oh goodie
The Cow February 25 - 6:36 PM

I was waiting for this game. :)

Oh...
Nookster February 25 - 4:06 PM

"I think you should be annoyed at yourself".

I think you should take a moment to consider what you actually said.

Re: low system requirements
Calroth February 25 - 3:35 PM

"I can't believe the requirments are that high. Anyone who has played this game on the PC knows that you can make the graphcs look pre doom 1..."

Erm, what the hell?

The requirements on the PC side are a Pentium 4 or Athlon at 1.5GHz. So the Mac requirements are similar. The PC side does allow you to go down to a Radeon 8500 or a GeForce3 though.

I think you should be annoyed at yourself for having a 933, which is woefully underpowered for modern gaming by PC standards, and Apple for not making faster machines sooner, sorry. (Tell a PC gamer that you have a 933 and wait for them to stop rolling on the floor laughing.)

low system requirments
Mattg February 25 - 12:43 PM

I can't believe the requirments are that high. Anyone who has played this game on the PC knows that you can make the graphcs look pre doom 1. You can turn off shadows, specular stuff, even make the textures have almost no detail. Oh well, guess my 933 bites the dust. No matter I'm getting it anyway.

requirements
AquinasWI February 25 - 11:36 AM

I realize that the game has incredible graphics, but these system requirements are laughably high. I just bought a brand new G5 iMac with 1.2 GB of RAM and I'm not confident that it would run the game properly.

Whatever -- I'll wait for the Xbox version. At least it'll run fine.

Nagromme February 25 - 10:58 AM

Any other games coming that use the same engine?

demo?
KAKE February 25 - 10:24 AM

Any word on a demo? If it doesn't perform well on my system, I don't want to buy it.

happywhoosit February 25 - 10:22 AM

Eruc5h5: if I understand it correctly, Apple imbeds OpenGL updates within the system, not separate update like the updates to iTunes and other items. This makes it neccessary to use the latest system update. Apple needs to make the OpenGL updates separate (in my opoini0n).

mcp February 25 - 10:03 AM

This is one of the most boring game ever. Short, repetitive, Doom I with modern graphics-ZERO evolution. I'd rather play a great game with lower graphics like Deus Ex than this over-hyped piece of junk.

Ack!
ΔEric5h5 February 25 - 9:42 AM

Is 10.3.8 really a requirement? I had to go back to 10.3.7 because 10.3.8 screws up my X800 fan....

excited... heh
Strider February 25 - 8:39 AM

already ordered... well, been preordered now for about 3months! DARN I CANNOT WAIT TO PLAY THIS. also got a load of mods/total conversions from doom3.filefront.com ready (hope they work!).

YES!!! Come on Aspyr !! :-D

CorT February 25 - 8:35 AM

i hope this is still selling in a few years when i can afford a computer that'll run it O_O

maybe i'll just get it now and wait for the computer =P

doom 3 goes gold
haquari February 25 - 8:23 AM

ummm... yay. hope the conversion went well. at the very least, those Aspyr coders got one heck of a lot of practice in!

Apelock February 25 - 8:17 AM

Good job Aspyr - I'll bet this wasn't the easiest beast to port over. Good sales to you.
