I thought that too until I went along on a raid on Sunday.

My Zeppelin trip was the last to run for several hours. I quit the app on the crossing screen (after about five minutes), and when i could log back in a minute or two later I was at my destination. Another in my party and on that Zeppelin wasn't so lucky--he still couldn't log in over two hours later.

The raid started out as around 200 people. By the time we reached our destination we were under 50, the rest were casualties of server problems.

penny-arcade.com has some good answers that helped to explain this, but I still want to know what software Blizzard is using. They are talking about problems setting up the backend software. It seems a no brainer to run a MMORPG off of Linux boxes and do a simple net install on every new box brought online. Some how I doubt they have done that: scheduled downtime says Microsoft to me.

So, it would be better to say nothing at all, which I would think is the more standard approach? How many corporate presidents do you see making a public apology like this when something's gone wrong? Granted, if all you get are "Sorry"s and nothing gets fixed, then I might start to wonder about the sincerity of the apologies.

His comments have no substance. This is just a standard response that doesn't explain anything.

Luckily for me, my server has had none of these problems...
