that means Valve needs to still pay for the Quake licence for Half-Life 2.

First, hats off to John Carmack for contributing his immediately-previous-generation engine source to the community. That's an unbelievably generous thing to do. At all.

And hats off again for striving to strike an appropriate balance between respecting his licensees' businesses and feelings and those of the open source community. It's in all of our best interests to have id's licensees feel confident that they benefit from the license, and if that means we have to wait a few more months for the source, it seems absolutely worth it to me.

Would this have an impact on the availability of Enemy Territory for the Mac? Or is the RtCW/ET engine so heavily modified that the Q3 source wouldn't even matter at this point?

It's not so much that I'm hyped about Enemy Territory itself than I am with the future of two of Quake 3's best mods--True Combat and Urban Terror. Both are being ported over to ET and it's highly questionable whether they'll ever be available for the Mac again.

You're a good man John Carmack.
