Freespace 2 is the greatest space flight-sim ever.  The source code has been out for a long time, but there's no Mac OS X port so far...

I emailed awe of Fruitz-of-Dojo, but he doesn't own a Freespace 2 disc.

Placy, do you know more details about this? Is it your iDisk?

Wow, that's exciting news.  Are you working on the port or is someone else?  Is it just a one man team?

We'll post some news about this and hopefully things can get moving faster.   Ooooh I can't wait!
I live in Mexifornia.

I'll probably have too much to do. For reference, my ~/Projects/ folder has 31 active projects inside :P
It seems like this guy is doing okay by himself. No point interferring.

Freespace 1 and 2 were both awesome games that had not only great multiplayer but an amazing single player with a very well written story, great music and solid character development. Perhaps the best space opera games ever I dare say(though the first iWar game was pretty cool as well)...

I wish I still had my copy, I'd fire it up right now ^_^

If this is getting ported to the Mac, that can only be a good thing and I tip my hat at the developer(s)

hiya,

...imagine my surprise when I visited img and saw this post:  I hadn't announced it anywhere!  Well, I guess the cat is outta the bag...

...so, the first thing is that I don't have a copy of freespace2 (yet);  I "bought" one via ebay over two weeks ago, but still haven't received it...development is kinda stalled until I receive it :-(

...there are two major projects using the freespace 2; mine is based on the icculus.org code base, which ported the code to opengl and SDL, which made it fairly easy to get going (almost)...I started working on it last august, mainly working on byte swapping, and was initially impressed with the ease in which the sdl port made my effort!  I very quickly got the game running, then realized that it wasn't showing any models...this was a big problem that was shelved until late november, when I started hanging out in the hard light productions forums (they're doing the other major project, but seem to be more focused on improving the directX implementation...): a coupla helpful guys pointed out the incredibly labyrinthine model parsing code, and after a week or so, the models were showing up!

...so, why haven't I posted anything about it?  Well, so far I've only been able to use the demo files, which seem to work well, with one possibly disturbing caveat:  primary weapons don't hit all targets correctly!  Fr'instance, in the demo training level, you've got a trainer that you follow, and then some drones appear that yr s'posed to destroy...primary weapons (lasers) cause no damage to the drones, but 2ndary (rockets) do...the weird thing is that primary weapons do work fine against the training instructor ;-)

...also, taylor richards has been making adjustments to the fs2 engine that allow freespace:silent threat and freespace:the great war playable...I have copies of these, and will be testing his changes this week...

...so, to sum up, we have a working SDL/opengl based OSX port of freespace2, soon to have freespace 1 support and other enhancements, but a few bugs need to be snuffed before general release...

...hang in there, it's on it's way!

Sounds pretty neat after all... Do you have an idea concerning system requirements? It would be good to know if it will run on a iMac 700? What are you using?

Awesome news!  Perhaps you should bid on another FS2 copy?

I wonder if the differences between demo files and final game code have anything to do with the bugs?

Possible.

Anyway, will we all need full cds of Freespace2 There are some eBay auctions running currently where I could get it.

And will it work with the German Freespace2? This would be awesome.

Excellent news on the potential FS1 compatibility!
FS1 is still really easy to find in one
of those dual jewel case $9.99 paks.  FS2 on the
other hand is a bit tougher.  I found a place that
was selling it in September/October last year for
$14.95 (on DVD).  Wonder how difficult it would
be for Interplay to release it again in the $9.99
format...

I could've sworn i saw Freespace 2 in a $9.99 pack at Walmart.  It was either that or Homeworld, Freespace 1 or both...

Whoo Hoo!!!
I bought the Jewel set a couple years ago and played them on my now gone 166 MMX mhz ghetto machine, and they are fun games to play.  Pretty hard too!  But fun none the less.
Can't wait to play them at more than 10 fps!

It was probably Freespace 1 and it's expansion pack.

I've got 4 or 5 stores around where I live that carry
these and I've never seen FS2 (looked for it a lot but
never saw it).  It would be a good combo for the dual
paks especially since it comes on 3 cds.
