Congratulations Rich!

I see you are up to 108% already. Better announce those stretch goals soon!

FYI Rich has announced that there will be a new chapter if funding reaches 150%. And he'll let the community help decide whether it will be a chapter about the emulator scene or about communities like GameMaker and uDevGames. (Though he admits that he might have trouble lining up enough materials for the latter on short notice, whereas he is already very familiar with the emulator scene.)

41% more? I doubt we will reach that. Speaking of which, when does it stop?

31% (now 30%) more. It's a lot, but it's possible. We've climbed 9% in the past two weeks.

I'm now working to an end-of-September manuscript deadline, so the campaign may remain open to new pledges for another several weeks. I don't think Unbound actually needs to close it until production starts.

Ah, that's nice then! Looking forward to that emulator chapter.. ;) I used it on my dad Spartacus to run Diablo I in Windows with one of the first Windows emulator releases.

I advocated for the GameMaker chapter, as I don't think emulation is as supportive of the book's thesis. But most of the book's other supporters want the emulation chapter. It's cool.

Yeah, I'm torn. I'm more interested in the emulation chapter but the GameMaker one fits better.

Slightly worried about this. The manuscript was near completion in October but there have been no updates since.

Update coming tonight (my time, so tomorrow for most of you guys).

My chapters have been finished for a while. But as I posted on Twitter earlier this week, we've hit a pretty sizeable delay (due to Craig Fryar's tardiness in finishing his parts of the book) and publication isn't likely until next year (because publisher thinks it'll take the best part a year to do all the production and other stuff).

Since we have some really old dudes in here (And girls? No? *taps speaker*), that tend to hoard stuff and show affection to every little thing they come across, I think this may be of interest:

Quote

We're wrapping up the editing phase at the moment and the manuscript will be heading to Darren for layout and design soon, so if any of you have visual material that you can/would like to share for possible inclusion in the book, please send it to me at rich.c.moss@gmail.com as soon as you can (let's say by the end of the month — although I'm sure we'll still be working on design for a while after that, I'd rather not suddenly drop new visual material on him as we get deeper into the process).
What kind of stuff am I talking about? Behind-the-scenes photos, event photos, screenshots, box scans, ads, marketing material, design documents, concept art, maps, letters, etc. Anything visual (and static, since it's going in a book and not on a website) that's relevant to 1980s or 90s Mac gaming.
If you send anything, please let me know if you own the copyright to the materials (i.e., is it your photo? Your screenshot? Your company's game?) and if so whether we have permission to include it in the book (with appropriate credits). If you don't own the copyright, you can still send it in, but depending on what it is we may not be able to use it unless we can find the rights holder and get their permission (or if it's public domain). If in doubt, feel free to ask me.

Just to let everyone here know, Unbound just put the book on Kickstarter -- solely for the purposes of giving people one last chance to order the special edition.

Kickstarter backers do not get access to my Unbound "shed" updates, and they do not get their name in the book. It's purely a chance for them to order a copy of the special edition. (Trade edition will have the same content, but it won't be as fancy with the design flourishes. Definitely no blue page edges unless you get the special edition, for instance.)

Speaking of which, we are on the final checking stage of the design. It's all done -- images and text and everything in place -- and we're just looking over it to check for any remaining issues before it goes off to "repro", which is when the printer does a few copies for us to look over to check for accuracy (in case they messed something up or the file wasn't configured right).

Anyway, here's the Kickstarter link. Campaign page shows some of the design. (So don't look if you already backed and you're wanting to be surprised when the book arrives at your door.)

There's only so much suspense I can take in my life right now. It was either this or the Last Jedi trailer.

Oh, I hadn't noticed that trailer was out. *goes to look it up*

Darren has done a marvellous job on the design and visual direction. I'm delighted with how good the proofs are looking.

Ah damn. I missed the Kickstarter thing to get the Special Edition and on Unbound the Hardbacks Special Editions are all sold out.

Will have to get the standard version then. When will that one be available? March 22?

As far as I know, yes — March 22.

I posted exterior photos of the trade edition on Twitter a few days ago. I think it looks almost as beautiful as the special edition. Inside, the differences I noticed are lower paper stock and lower-quality binding — which makes it feel like a well-designed mass market product rather than bespoke like the special edition.

I just got my digital links for the book.

I joke, but I almost donít want them! Itíll be tough to hold out for the paper version to arrive. Hopefully itís soon.

Fingers crossed for you! I can imagine the temptation to look at the digital version while you wait must be nearly overwhelming.

The bad news for US folks is that it could be a while — this is only one isolated data point, to be sure, but it took Craig Fryar's copies a month or so to reach him. I really hope the average shipping time works out faster. Curiously, Aussies may have it better. My advance copy took a couple of weeks over Christmas and New Years to arrive, while my two boxes of author copies (one box of 10 special editions, another of 12 trade editions) took only a week or so to reach me in Melbourne.

Oh gosh. Well, thanks for the heads up. I guess I'll stop madly refreshing the page. Mine still says "awaiting dispatch," and it was last updated on the 20th.
