So, here's the deal: I've never played a Call of Duty game before. And before anyone jumps to the conclusions that I'm biased against shooter games, let me assuage your concerns by saying that I love shooter games. My first computer games were shooters (Doom, Quake, Unreal, etc). Today I own and play CS:GO, Bioshock, Bioshock Infinite, Borderlands 2 and TPS, Metro 2033 and Last Light. I'm playing the pre-alpha of Unreal Tournament, for crying out loud!

I love shooter games. So, there is a huge section of the gaming public whose experience with them ends and begins with Call of Duty, with which I have no experience. I'm now wanting to dip my toe into the CoD pool. But, given that, which is the best one to get, considering the comparatively small selection of titles from which to choose? And, more importantly, why?

From a technical standpoint, one thing I would like to know is which CoD game will run consistently at a minimum of 60 fps on my late 2012 iMac with 512MB Geforce 650M GPU? One of the things I like about Counter Strike is that it runs 100+ fps, maxed out, so that fluidity spoils you. :) I understand that the reason that works is because of the age of the game, but to be fair, most of the CoD games for Mac are of a similar vintage.

Thoughts?

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the one that I prefer the best. You'll be able to play it no problem on max settings. I just logged in quick to check the server population and there was hundreds of populated servers.

Modern Warfare 3 is the most recent COD available on Mac, but it's a few years old now. Modern Warfare 2 is probably the favourite COD of a lot of people, so it might have a great population still, but I don't own it, so I can't login and check.

Black Ops was a fantastic game, but due to some weird licensing issues and Steam vs Mac App Store limitations it has a fractured online community (Mac App Store Players, Steam Mac Players)

With CoD 4, is there a multiplayer difference in buying on the MAS vs Steam?

I liked the CoD 1 + 2 games quite a bit, both of which you can get on Macgamestore. Modern Warfare was also quite decent, it had a much higher difficulty level IMO though. And MP was pretty funny.

I only played the first one, but I really liked it. Aside from the interesting missions, they managed to make me feel the scale and impact of the war. For example there's a memorable mission when you switch from being a trained, equipped British or American soldier to being a conscripted Russian peasant- a jarring and moving contrast.

I don't believe so. I own the MAS version and the servers looked very lively so I'm assuming I was looking at all Mac and PC servers.

1, 2, and 4:Modern Warfare are all pretty good.  I only play single player so I can't vouch for the multiplayer modes.

Is the server browser in-game, or do you have to use game ranger?

What you linked is an expansion pack for the base game, so you'll need to own the base game in order to use the expansion.

Seconding this, 1, 2, and 4 were the high points of the series. All around good titles and lots of fun. Now, the increasingly bad follow-ups churned out as Activision decided to turn Call of Duty into a Thing... we won't go there.

When there's a multiplayer version, I'm going to be on Frost's team. Well, except he doesn't seem to actually need a team...I mean, what's the point? "Hey look, it's Frost and His Merry Gang of Useless Hangers-On!" Or something.
