Hi all,

Wondering if we can compile a list of the current and upcoming Metal application/games for OS X.

I'll start things off:

Currently Support Metal: Future Metal Support:
  • Firewatch (waiting on Metal support in the Unity Engine - it was supposed to have it on release)
  • World of Warcraft (to release with the Legion expansion sometime in 2016)
  • Starcraft 2 (sometime after WoW gets metal support)
  • Heroes of the Storm (sometime after WoW gets metal support)
  • Fortnite (Epic Games) (game is currently in Alpha)
  • Adobe's Creative Cloud Software (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) (No known eta)
  • AutoCad and Maya (AutoDesk has pledged metal support, so I'm assuming these are going to be the apps that they bring it to)
Anyone else know any current/upcoming stuff?

Pixelmator, but as far as I know only in the Photos extensions (i.e. not the application itself).

This is very cool. Thanks for starting this thread. If I learn of anything not already here I'll be sure to post but you guys are usually more on top of everything than I am. I try too! I guess I am just getting a little bit older and a little bit slower....

Hopefully 2K Games can get us some 4K games with Metal support.

I'd personally like to skip 3K games. I always find the black levels really lacking.

When there's a multiplayer version, I'm going to be on Frost's team. Well, except he doesn't seem to actually need a team...I mean, what's the point? "Hey look, it's Frost and His Merry Gang of Useless Hangers-On!" Or something.

I just stumbled upon an update for VirtualC64 (obviously an Atari 800 emulator… ) that now supports Metal. In fact, the developer has completely ripped out all OpenGL code, so it not only supports Metal, it requires it.

So, is Metal why Apple has virtually abandoned OpenGL in the years preceding it's release?  Or did Apple never care about OpenGL because it was "toy" software for a "toy" computer rather than "sophisticated business/hipster" software for a "sophisticated business/hipster" computer?  And if so, why the hell develop Metal?

With Apple it's like one hand doesn't know what the other is doing.

They kind of pushed iOS games, so i could believe that they only added OpenGL extensions that the iOS hardware could use or would make sense in that aspect.

But the only reason for metal that i can see, is that they somehow think they can gain an advantage long term. Somehow. Some way. I dont know. Apple is still weird.
