Hi

I want to inform you that someone created the unofficial version of Diablo I that you can run on Mac OS X (Intel):

https://freeablo.org/

Unfortunately, the current version of Freeablo is not the fully playable version of this game. However, you can notice that the author is actively working on this project:

Heh, good luck with staying alive for another month. Blizzard is notorious for going after crackpots that use their assets, and people never learn. But if they actually get around it, by dragging on peoples own installations, then I wish them mighty good luck. I'd play it for sure, as I do think it is the best of the Diablo games.

Edit: I assume it is Windows only?

I read somewhere that some people from Blizzard know about this project, and Freeablo requires data of the Diablo in order to run this game on Mac OS X.

The official binary file for Mac OS X do not exist, but you can compile this game on Mac OS X:

"
OSX

First install Xcode, and brew, of course.
$ brew install boost boost-python lbzip2 zlib sdl2 sdl2_image freetype libtomcrypt --universal cmake
$ brew tap wheybags/homebrew-librocket
$ brew install --HEAD librocket
# here it will possibly print a message about python module path settings, follow its instructions

and continue on with the Linux/Unix section (ignore the librocket instructions).
Linux/Unix

freeablo uses cmake, and depends on boost >= 1.54, libbz2, zlib, and SDL2, sdl2_image, and libRocket, so make sure to have those installed. libRocket (http://github.com/libRocket/libRocket) isn't packaged in most distros, so you'll have to install it from source (this isn't very hard).
libRocket installation:
$ git clone https://github.com/l...t/libRocket.git
$ cd libRocket
$ mkdir buildDir
$ cd buildDir
$ cmake ../Build -DBUILD_PYTHON_BINDINGS=On -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX:PATH=/usr
$ make
$ sudo make install

libRocket depends on boost::python and freetype
Get the source:
via git:
$ git clone https://github.com/w...gs/freeablo.git
$ cd freeablo
$ git submodule update --init

or download from https://github.com/w...eeablo/releases.
make a build directory:
$ cd ..
$ mkdir build
$ cd build

symlink the resources folder:
$ ln -s ../freeablo/resources

call cmake:
$ cmake ../freeablo
Now you're ready to go, cmake has generated a makefile, just run make to compile"

There is a OS X binary on the download page. It's only a command line executable, but still.

The Windows version runs just great with Wineskin. I setup Diablo 1 and 2, Warcraft 3 & expansion and Starcraft + Broodwar with Wineskin and they all run great. Also, Warcraft and Warcraft 2 work great with Boxer not surprisingly.

So, personally I see no need for a in progress Diablo 1 but if it does get done at some point and utilizes the original game assets to provide the original unadulterated experience that would certainly be cool.

I also highly doubt such a project would not be killed by Blizzard before it could become popular. I suppose I could be wrong but I kind of doubt it.

Would be interesting to try out Hellfire though. I never had the chance, even though one should suspect it, due to my avatar through the last 10 years. :P

The mod support is not available in the current version of Freeablo, but I found this information:

"To clarify, it will definitely be done at some point, but I'm not sure when (I've never actually played hellfire)"

I forgot about this section of the webpage.

However, I strongly recommend to compile own version from the git because it always be a more completed version of this game.
