Oh I've got plenty of reasons for kickstarter backlash (also I backed SC before it was on Kickstarter). Those KS arseholes can go down and I won't shed a tear.
I can't complain: of the 13 projects I backed, only two were duds (what the frak was I thinking when I backed the Ouya??). The rest either delivered in spades or is shaping up well.

Short story was a company not fulfilling kickstarter rewards but was sending product to retail (apparently due to some sort of internal feud). Complained to kickstarter (along with many others), completely understanding that I would never see a refund, but per their documentation this company shouldn't be allowed to have more projects until this is was resolved. Kickstarter said pound sand, they are one of our biggest clients, not gunna happen. Company proceeds to make more kickstarter projects while we sit with out our backer rewards.  Well, ok, good to know where KSs ethics are. Not going to line your pockets anymore and I'll proselytize to the moon and back that everyone should use alternative crowdfunding tools.

I can't really call the Oyua a dud, I got what I paid for. A dinky little android cube.

The internet says it be true. and also some sort of hilarious to me the outsider backhanded shenanigans where they only bought the parts of ouya they liked and left the parts they didn't like (such as existing contracts owing money)

Hmm, well, ok... then thats the death of that being any good.

Sure Razer can make some decent mice, and keyboards, but their software sucks ass, their support software, their voice communication software, their social software... its all so ungodly disgusting and difficult to use. And they really clearly believe in the development philosophy of "lets just release what we got, and hotfix the hell out of it forever".

Wow, never heard of this. If KS doesn't follow their own rules they are asking for trouble. To be clear, the odds that they called on it are very small, but the SC situation worsens the odds for them. If a PR storm hits then people will be able to get easy page hits with stories like yours.

You have piqued my curiosity. Can I ask:
  • name of the company/product that had the problem?
  • names of any alternate crowdfunding services that you like, or have looked at?
(Short answers are fine, no need to spend time on this.)

Relevant.

Kinda how I felt about backing Planetary Annihilation. As someone who loved Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander... I do not love PA at all. At one point I considered putting about three times as much money into it as I did because I loved their idea so much. I didn't. Glad now.

I love how they also jumped on Planetary Resources' kickstarter giving the game free to high level backers of the Arkyd space telescope (another one I backed) and promising a unique Planetary Commander unit in the game. Which the last time I checked, they still never delivered to Arkyd backers, even though they've had time to come up with like 5 more Commander units to sell for $10 each on their store.

Meh.

I don't really think the pessimism is warranted yet on Star Citizen, though. Pretty positive as long as they get the Squadron 42 single-player/coop game out the door with the level of polish that the released content's shown so far, they'll have enough revenue to operating with ease.

Sweet mother of monkeys milk. 900 dolan exploration ships that may be implemented in the hangar some day. Really starting to think Roberts needs a publisher to start reining him in. I'm gunna have had my fill of space with Elite long before this ever reaches a real release.

…meanwhile, more reports are cropping up that SC's development is deep into trouble, among others claiming that 90% of the $90 million have already been wasted on things not related to the actual game.

I expect the truth is somewhere in the middle but when I gave that crook my money in 2012 I gave it to him for the Wing Commander + he was billing it as not "ultrasamulatorpay2win5000" that it's currently slated to be. And still growing in scope.

At least I have my little plastic card with my name on it.

I like this quote from HardOCP.

http://hardforum.com...23&postcount=11

Quote

Because now were mired in a Programmatic Ponzi. They need to sell those $900 ships today to fund the coding of ships sold two years ago (Starfarer anyone?) as well as the base game. It's going to be years before the coding of the $900 Endeavor begins and that is just art elements. Plus they have to find a way to interject the Endeavor ship gameplay elements into SC (farming on the ship, research, etc). And when it comes time to code the Endeavor, how are they going to fund it? By selling more concept ships that you won't see for years, I presume.

There is no possible way this is sustainable.

The problem with the game is its scope, not the ships. The ships can all be obtained by playing the game. They are really only there if you want to "donate" to the cause.
In any case, I backed the game for Squadron 42, the single player experience. If that turns out well I'll be content.

I don't think it started off that way and if they had built the game they original described in 2012 maybe. Now I think they will forever be in a loop of being years behind deliverables already paid for, if every they are released. I think elite had the right idea and made a solid base game and are building future extras into later releases. Right now I've got a hodge lodge of half baked modules and a plastic card. Some people seem pretty content with this. The thing I have downloaded from RSI certainly doesn't resemble even the initial vision of the game, let alone the current SOW.

May seem hard but it kind of feels like they are holding the “game” hostage. If we don’t keep ponying up the cash, will the project will dissolve. If they didn't get a single new backer from today until release would they be able to complete the game? I really don't think so, and that's not cool. They don’t have enough money to finish. They need more. They are using crazy "donation" ships to keep funding past promises. Where does it end?

I can't help comparing this to Descent Underground. Some of the people working on it came from Star Citizen. And they use some of the tricks like selling subscriptions alongside the game itself. They are still soliciting for stretch goals long after the Kickstarter ended.

But it's night & day. The game seems to be coming along well. They have set a low bar for the single-player game (might be missions rather than a campaign) but a full campaign is a long-term goal, and if the game is moddable it won't matter in the long run. They post lots of video, have run a couple public tests, and they are clearly controlling scope. I fully expect to be playing this game next year (though possible not as early as March.)

I get that they are "merely" building a modern version of an old game, while SC was supposedly trying something unprecedented, but nonetheless it seems painfully obvious who knows how to actually ship a game. Perhaps if people had over-funded the DU Kickstarter they'd have increased the scope and now be in trouble too.
