Well, Chromium had a good run. But something's gone terribly wrong as of about two weeks ago. All of a sudden it randomly can't boot off of anything, and freezes constantly. Apple Hardware Test shows everything is fine (as usual), when it doesn't freeze mid-operation.

Tried the entire troubleshooting checklists both official and unofficial till I've finally gotten to "replace logic board and try again" on everything. Motherfrakker. After an SMC reset followed by PRAM reset followed by booting off a USB drive it did start working again for about two days, so I figured maybe something bad got written to the SMC and that cleared it. Then it resumed freezing constantly. That trick has not worked again, so I'm guessing that was just a fluke.

Time to decide if I want to do a full-blown motherboard swap or just retire the machine and look for a good used mid-2012 non-retina MBP. Sigh. I guess a 2008 MBP is getting pretty long in the tooth at this point. If I do go for a newer one, I will really miss that keyboard. Most comfortable laptop keyboard for heavy typing ever. I'm also dubious on replacing the motherboard since the early 2008s are a crapshoot of whether they had the defective 8600M GT or not. Mine did not, but I think the Core 2 Duo is what is dying on me. The high likelihood of exchanging a dying CPU for a bad GPU kind of gives me pause.

Meanwhile Cypher is all, "Can't stop da PowerPC, baby!" (in best Cole Train voice) as it closes in on 10 years in a few months.

(Just sing the chorus) (Lyrics included in case you haven't ventured out of your basement in a couple of years)

7 years is a good run. My 2006 MBP also just hit the dust - I accidently broke a wire while de-dusting it inside. Fortunately I have a spare of the exact same model, that I got from my old supervisor, so I am just going to swap harddrive, SSD, RAM and battery into that one and continue. Still, 9 years was a long time and Christine was still going strong. Oh well, I am closer to buying a rev. B Macbook now though.

Is it a 2.7 with a high res anti glare screen? If so, I'm coming over to pry it from your cold, dead hands.

Yes, I spent the extra 50 bucks to get the matte screen at the time. 1680x1050 Matte Screen. 512GB SSD. Also it's covered in stickers, let me find my phone and snap a shot of it. It's only the 2.3 though, but Multicore it's neck and neck with my Mac Pro and single core it blows it out of the water.

***EDIT***
I need to upgrade from the 512SSD to a TB because WHY NOT but this is hands down the best portable apple made after the Pismo. If ya got the high res matte screen.

Chromium is dead. Long live Iridium!

Specs:

Mid-2012 MacBook Pro, 8GB of RAM (upgrading to 16GB when the SO-DIMMs arrive), 512GB Apple SSD (replacing with my faster, more spacious 1TB M600 from Chromium), 1680x1050 high res screen, anti-glare, 2.7 GHz CTO i7, 650M with 1GB of VRAM, and AppleCare till December 2015. Mint condition and came with the original box and charger.

Benchmarks put the CPU only an iPhone 5 away from the current top of the line retina MBP, and the GPU is maybe 5% slower. In exchange, I've got a MacBook Pro with a 7/10 repairability score instead of 1/10, no reflections on the screen, and a Superdrive.

This thing kicks ass. The only downside is those black chiclet keys are so much less comfortable to type on than the keyboard on my early '08 MacBook Pro. But, that's exchanging one negative for like 20 positives, so I can live with it.

Computer was $3800 when purchased in December 2012. I got it for $1650, and can resell the SSD for about $300 since I don't need it, making it effectively $1350. I think I did okay!

I don't dislike retina screens (though I think apple has underpowered GPUs on devices with them). But the 2012 non retina MBP is plenty thin, and immensely serviceable (and the last model to have the non-glare screen as an option. To me it was the pinnacle of design and upgradability in Apple's modern machines. Second only to the Pismo. Now it's thin thin thin glue glue glue never get to upgrade.

True. Forgot about being able to upgrade in a Mac. I had my old 13" 2010 MBP completely pimped out back in the day. One big disadvantage about the retina is that not every application supports the retina screen (some of them look REALLY wonky).

Also, Windows 8.1 sucks in retina mode. The actual OS is fine, but nearly every application has no idea what's going on with the retina screen.

I dont like the retina's because when it gets an SD image, instead of just taking the 1 pixel and turning it into 4 pixels of exact color and brightness, it tries to 'interpolate' and ultimately 'blur-the-crap' out of that one pixel.

Not a damn thing, I'd love to have a retina screen. My problem is mainly what's under the hood. The unibody MacBook Pros are a breeze to modify and repair. A total noob with a guide could do it with no risk of doing something wrong, which means a technician can work on it in his sleep. That's one thing I love about my titanium PowerBook G4. It's needed repair over the years, but it's ridiculously easy to tear down and fix and keep running. Unless the CPU or GPU blows up, it's basically indestructible. Even a motherboard swap is a piece of cake if it gets down to it. Result: it's 13 years old and long past any resemblance of useful life and still chugging along happily.

Retina MBPs... FRAK that. I totally agree with iFixit's ratings. Unibodies are definitely a 7/10, and rMBPs are definitely a 1/10. Proprietary and ridiculously overpriced storage, RAM is not replaceable or upgradeable, battery is glued to the case, I don't even have the option for an optical drive, and there's no option for the screen other than glossy. I detest hardly being able to make out what's on the screen from a zillion reflections when I'm in brightly lit environments or outside.

I just don't like the philosophy of "anything goes wrong, chuck your multi-thousand dollar investment in the trash." All my Macs have needed one repair or another over the years, and with the exception of Chromium's CPU dying, they've all been easily repairable. I'm really hesitant to invest in a computer that I can't say that about. I'm sure I will eventually just because I'll at some point need a newer laptop and I will want a Mac, not a PC, but right now, a higher res screen and a slight reduction in thickness doesn't make a case for the enormous increase in price and reduction in capability. The CPU only being an iPhone 5's worth of extra power and the GPU getting only single digit better FPS in games in a top of the line $3600 rMBP vs. this one sealed the deal.

tl;dr: I see rMBPs as giving me a lovely screen and being slightly thinner in exchange for a whole lot of negatives.
