It's a fun game and FYI it's also part of the latest Humble bundle for a few more days so I picked up a second copy via that as the copy I had previously ordered from GOG to run in WINE is still PC only so far...

On the plus side the native port has been 100% stable (my wrapped version would freeze and need force quitting fairly often).

On minus side something, maybe lighting related(?) causes noticeable slowdowns at random on my Mac Pro 3.06GHz with Radeon 7950 and 10.10.2.

I tried changing from the "ultra" preset to "low" and also tested dropping the resolution from 1440p right down to 720p but neither had an effect it just goes from nice and fluid to sluggish and then back to normal again...

Yeah, its odd that the steam page only shows the windows logo. Normally when that is the case, the game is not launched on MGS until it shows the mac logo. I really have no idea why the game was launched, if it actually has no mac version ???

Sounds like it was a poorly laid out April Fools joke at the expense of MGS and bad PR.

I think the Steam storefront just hasn't been updated. The game definitely appears as installable in my library:

Ahok. I just hate when a publisher gives MGS something before its available and says "put it out!" ... then we get customers all going "wtf!" ... We've even had publishers submit games for mac and windows, but turns out it only runs on one or the other, not both, and I'm sitting going "why on earth did you say this runs on x when it clearly doesnt?!"

Devs seem to take their time bringing mac ports to GOG. The Enchanted Edition of Trine still isn't available on there, and neither is Outlast...

First impression: performance is not very good on 6970M. Default (2560x1440, med/high) is very choppy. 1920x1080 ~med also not very good. (Tested on 10.9.5)

Shadow Warrior doesn't seem optimized for Mac. Even if graphics settings are lowered, fps is low.

For AMD cards I read that adding the line:

r_draw_decals_skinned "0"

can sometimes  help - I can't seem to get the console to appear so I tried adding this to the config file instead - subjectively it may be a little better but there are still random drops in performance that are noticeable for me.

Games on OS X seem to be exceptionally resolution dependent when it comes to performance. 1440p is pretty up there.

It was their default. Not mine :-)

Anyway I wrote message to developer and they said they are aware of perfomance problems on OS X and they are working on it.
Thats better than Oddworld developer (4 messages, no response).

Running at 1680x1050. Seems fairly rock solid. Thank God it's no DEAD ISLAND! :wall:

The mobile chips (and VRAM) Apple is putting in these things is great for driving these massive displays for day to day work, even popsnizzle like photoshop but man Apple could default to moar VRAM IMO.

I can't fathom how anyone at VPLd looked at that and said, yes we should release this. It's like playing a slideshow. At least in Wandows it's smooth, general buggyness and crashing aside. Same with The Witcher 2. Whatever this eON technology they developed is (I gather it's a translation layer like Cider?) it's not greatman.

For me at least dropping the resolution or quality settings doesn't seem to have a noticeable effect so I'm guessing there is a bug making a feature run less than optimally.

I remember back  in the day with Jedi knight 2 and Borderlands 1 there was something that was running on the CPU rather than GPU that would do the same.

I believe it. The Witcher 2 and Dead Island, all the settings cajoling in the world don't have any effect. There was one setting in BL1 that I think had a huge effect for me, Ambulant something. Something to do with lighting. I know BL2 for me is HUGELY resolution dependent (in addition to seeming to have poor performance on Nvidia cards on OS X). On my laptop if I run BL2/TPS at native 1680x1050 it's not greatman. Hell on my desktop it's a similar story yet booted to windows it's smooth as butter on maximum. For BL2 I think some of the blame falls on Apple for having out of date gaming APIs, for other stuff like TW2 and DI, I lay that all on the developers.

Looking at my setting for BL 1 it was the shadows that were CPU dependant - I might try enabling that setting again now since I upgraded my CPU'S from the stock 2.26GHz quads to the later 3.06GHz hexacores.

Dead Island is also really poor for me regardless of settings as well and for some reason won't allow 1440p - it shows 1920 x 1440 so I get two black borders either side. The 1080p scaled setting actually looks worse but plays the same....go figure.

The Witcher 2 ironically seems OK at 1440p now for me as long as Ubersampling is off and BL2 was actually OK maxed at 1680 x 1050 back with my last GPU (Radeon 5870) and now is OK at 1440p with the Radeon 7950 I'm running so I guess you are right about an Nvidia specific bug there.

I actually had my eye on a GTX 980 down the line when prices fall to something reason (unless there is something competitive announced from AMD that fits within the power budget of two six pin cables like the Nvidia) and almost got the GTX680 this time but for a great deal on this 7950 so I do hope the performance bugs you mentioned get resolved in an OS X update.

Battlecat sent back his 680 for a 7950 because the performance on BL2 was so bad and he says it runs swimmingly so that was my other data point on BL2 sucking on Nvidia cards on OS X. Under wandows I can max dem settings.
