If you're ever considering buying a Mercury Legacy Pro SSD to upgrade your old Mac that you like tinkering with, I would strongly advise against it. The one I have in my PowerBook has locked up and become unusable YET AGAIN because of the horrendous stress of copying an iTunes movie to it over the network.

This will be the fourth time I've had to return it to OWC for repair/replacement since I bought it in February 2013, which has it locking up twice a year on average. I'm going to see if I can press OWC to take the blasted thing back and refund me since this appears to be an inevitability unless I never copy more than a few megabytes at a time to it. The thought of this happening again later in the year, and then again in 2016 when my warranty runs out and then I'm stuck with a $550 piece of blue aluminum irks me quite a bit.

If I can get a refund, I'm going to see about instead getting an mSATA to PATA 2.5 adapter card and sticking an mSATA M550 or M600 in there instead. Not only would it be significantly cheaper, but it probably won't die every time the SSD is asked to perform a large write either.

I love OWC's products normally, but four times is beyond bad luck. This is a flawed product.

For the record, I don't fault OWC for making a bad SSD as much as I fault them for using a bad controller. These SSDs use the notorious Sandforce SF2281. I didn't know about that controller's reputation for exactly this kind of crap back when I bought it, or I wouldn't have in the first place.

There are indeed. The third time this SSD locked up I got all hacked off and went looking for alternatives. Apparently people have used this little fellow with older Mac laptops and M500 mSATA SSDs with perfect results.

Fkn nice chupafrostbraj. I should pull the cube out of storage and drop an SSD in it. I been meaning to get it out anyway and set up a 10.4 central hub for moving files around from retro to recent.

Right 10.4 was the last OS to support appletalk? Or was it 10.3. I could go with 10.3, I loves me some Panther.

It was Leopard, actually. SL was the one that removed AppleTalk.

Probably the largest problem I have with Apple is their refusal to support legacy tech. 99% of the time I don't need it, but the 1% of the time I do it is oh so frustrating

This.

It's not like I want them to support some deprecated crap from 1989 like Windows or something, but the other extreme of chucking the whole thing every couple releases is kind of frakked up too.

Update on the Classic Mac SSD Saga:

OWC would not do a refund even though that was the 4th return. Okay. Whatever. They sent me another new one. All I know is I'm done with this. I'm not sitting on a $500 blue brick when it randomly dies again eventually from the horrifying stress of writing >5GB at once. I decided to try out the mSATA SSD with a 2.5" PATA adapter solution instead. Bought a 512GB mSATA Crucial M550 from Amazon since they're on clearance and super-cheap now that the M550 is being superseded by a new product. Also bought that Micro SATA Cables brand adapter.

Got everything in on Saturday, assembled it yesterday and put it in my PowerBook. I did a back and forth full disk write, restored a clone of my drive from my Mercury Legacy Pro SSD, am currently reloading the contents of my Dropbox and then will have my 120GB iTunes library start loading. Instead of seizing up unless I literally place it on an icepack like some POS, the mSATA M550 is yawning at the whole process and plowing through everything I'm throwing at it. Micron flash with Marvell controllers FTMFW.

I also had to modify my PowerBook's rubber grommets so the Mercury Legacy Pro would sit slightly to the side as the PATA pins are about a half millimeter offset from standard. You wouldn't think that'd be much, but in the cramped space of a PowerBook, that's enough to cause the flex cable that connects to the motherboard to be unable to line up. I raised this issue with OWC a couple years ago and they said it must be a defect on that one drive... nope, it was wrong on every single drive they sent. It's a manufacturing or design defect and they have never corrected it. The $20 Micro SATA Cables adapter, meanwhile, lines up perfectly, so I was able to go back to my original unmodified grommets.

The replacement 480GB Mercury Legacy Pro is going up on eBay while it's still new in the package and has a warranty. Someone else can take a gamble.

That's actually not too far off the mark. Especially the selling it at a loss to save yourself from hell part. And that any attempt to get my money back results in it coming back each time.

I'm fairly certain if I put it behind my Charger and ran over it several times it would not come back, though. But I'm hoping to not have that much of a loss.
