Beamdog and Wizards of The Coast announced at PAX during the weekend that pre-orders have begun for Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition. Originally released in 2000, Icewind Dale is a Dungeons & Dragons adventure based in Wizards of The Coast's legendary Forgotten Realms campaign setting.

The Enhanced Edition will feature new kits and character classes, dozens of new items and spells, and restored quest material cut from the original game. The redesigned user interface features Zoom capabilities and a Quickloot Bar, among numerous other improvements. Up to six players will be able to simultaneously adventure in Icewind Dale with the new cross-platform multiplayer mode.

Evil is growing beneath the Spine of the World.

In the northernmost reaches of the Forgotten Realms lies the region of icy tundra known as Icewind Dale. Journey deep into the Spine of the World mountains, a harsh and unforgiving territory settled by only the hardiest folk. Beneath the carven glaciers and mountainsides, you must confront an evil that schemes to wreak destruction upon the face of Faerūn. This is the world of Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition.

Originally released in 2000, Icewind Dale is a Dungeons & Dragons game set in Wizards of The Coast's legendary Forgotten Realms. This Enhanced Edition allows players to experience the epic adventure on PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Android tablets and phones, and includes a host of new features:
  • Swords and Sorcery: Discover dozens of new spells and items, including new magic armor and weapons.
  • Blackguards and Wizard Slayers: Select from over 30 new kits and classes to create the perfect adventuring party.
  • Bring A Friend: Join your fellow adventurers in cooperative, cross-platform multiplayer games.
  • See The Unseen: Explore quest content cut from the original game, now finished and restored.
  • More to Experience: Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition includes both the Heart of Winter and Trials of the Luremaster expansion packs.

Yep. I'm very happy about this. What with IWD:EE and the upcoming Pillars of Eternity my gaming needs are satisfied for the forseeable future.

Not to be greedy, but I only hope that Icewind Dale 2 will eventually follow.

Trent Oster speaking with RPGFan.com said:

Yes, the process could be done on other Infinity games. We plan to use the same codebase for our upcoming Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition. Further projects will depend on how similar they are to the BG codebase. Icewind Dale is very close, Planescape:Torment is less so and Icewind Dale 2 is pretty far out there.

On the forums in the past he has essentially said IWD 2 won't happen. My guess is that strong sales of IWDEE could change his mind about that.

That seems logical, of course. In the meantime, does anyone here know what one would be getting into with this: http://www.gog.com/game/icewind_dale_2 ?

My main concern is the resolution... would be disappointing for the game to be the size of a postcard on my 27" monitor...

That's why most houses should come with towers. Lock them in for a few days, and game. You'll have fun, and they will be much more willing to please you after, and they learn something about not being egoistic. Win-win really.

Indeed, the human child is, essentially, a parasite. But really though, I didn't mean to be pushy or anything.

So Icewind Dale looks well enough, appear to be using Wine to wrap it up for OS X. There is a bit of cursor flicker for me, which is annnnnnnoying me. I'd probably spring for the EE. I've liked the BG EEs well enough.
