Does anyone know if Scott is ever going to actually update GameRanger? He's stopped responding to tweets asking about the update. 10.10 is due out soon. I gotta boot to windows to get my BL1 fix these days. BOOT TO WINDOWS.

The GameRanger update is hanging out in the same place as UT3 for OSX.

Last I talked with him, he said its definitely on his radar, but other matters are pushing his time on getting it fixed. It requires a rewrite of the networking protocals he uses, as he used OT (Open Transport) which was wrecked/deleted in recent OSX releases by apple.

I can appreciate that it was built on Open Transport which apple removed in 10.9, but apple depreciated OT in 10.4. Granted you never know when Apple finally will yank a library or api they've depreciated but one thing is for certain they always do. It's not like this should have been exactly a surprise five OS releases later. I can also appreciate that he probably wants to focus on getting gamespy PC games running by the bucketful as these are fresh users to grow the market. However it's been close to a year, and this breaks a lot of Mac games. You know those same users that were his bread and butter for years.

Yeah, granted Apple sometimes rips the rug out, but... I don't think almost a decade constitutes a rug rip.

Was this the fabled server update that was holding up the OS X rewrite. Will we soon see the release of a 10.9/10.10 compatible GameRanger. Will Ariens invade the earth?

It wasnt the server that caused the issue, its the client.

No, he had said on twotter or the forums or something he was going to work on the updated Mac client after he was done with server upgrades. I'm hoping these are the updates that was taking all his effort so now he can focus on the new client.

***EDIT***
Actually he had said it over at shack news.

Hey Scott, long long time Game Ranger user here. Do you have an update on the 10.9 compatible version? Just curious, I have been maintaining a 10.8 system for compatibility, hadn't seen anything in the news that suggested when the update might be finished. Keep up the good work!

I don't have a time frame for it, but it's very next on the list after I finish upgrading the servers to beefy new hardware.

This was posted over on the Game Ranger forums. I guess that means GameRanger for Mac has ceased development?

Everyone with any sense already left the Mac for their gaming needs as Apple gradually killed off most of the games in the past. This was long before Mavericks became an issue.

:/

I wonder if this is frustration born of whatever the Mavericks fix was being broken again in Yosemite.

If I'm not mistaken, most games that supported earlier versions of GameRanger on mac os x were PPC ports correct? It doesn't make sense why Apple doesn't favor compatibility of games and other applications that are suppose to work in the x86 CPU realm. I have the mac version of UT 2004 that doesn't even work.

Wasn't there a patch that would make it compatible with a X86 mac with 10.5 or 6 if the user has the installment data from a PPC computer running the same OS version?
What is a man?

Yes. There is a UB patch. UT2004 works for me on 10.9. (singleplayer and LAN multiplayer). I heard online multiplayer is broken now by same library removal as GameRanger.

Yeah, UT2004 Mac version worked for me in recent OS X versions with the patch. I think I had to patch it on my PPC Mac and transfer it over though.

Yeah, that's what I had to do. Installed and updated it and installed mutators and maps on my PowerMac, then copied the game/package over to my MacBook Pro wholesale. I found as long as it'll run without crashing on Leopard PPC it'll do the same on Mavericks Intel.

New Mac version of GameRanger
A huge amount of work has gone into it, but the Mac version now works fine with Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks), 10.10 (Yosemite), and 10.9 (El Capitan). The minimum version of Mac OS X required is now 10.4 (Tiger) instead of 10.3.9 (Panther).
Unfortunately the same can not be said of many of the Mac games themselves that no longer work on the newer versions of Mac OS X. That's outside of GameRanger's control.
