Link to overview page on Apple.com

New Interface - resembles flatter UI (similar to iOS 7)

New Spotlight - essentially Alfred, for those who use that app

New Safari and Mail apps, with new "iCloud Drive" functionality - similar to more traditional cloud storage solutions

New integration between Mac and iPhone - take calls from your mac, setup tethering from your Mac, etc.

Free and open beta for the OS: click here for more info

I love the look, apart from the flat icons. And I think I didn't see any colors in the sidebar either.

Feature wise it is looking good, but I hope it will be as fast as Snow Leopard. That's my biggest wish.

Flat icons and iOS 7 look = bleh. Sad to see the ugly look of messages on my iPad is now going to be in OSX too. People who loved the old Tiger dock are going to be happy though: it's back, albeit slightly modified.

That said, everything else about the next OSX rocks. And unlike iOS, I'm sure we'll be able to customize OSX's look in short order via 3rd party stuff.

I'm not sure if I like the new design. The transparent windows have a quite a Vista vibe. Good thing that there's a dark mode, though. I don't think that glaringly white default design is very easy on the eyes. However, the new Notification Center with widgets looks interesting. I guess that means Dashboard has been retired for good? I don't care much about iCloud or Continuity, but I assume that's interesting for some.

What I did not quite get: Metal and Swift are only iOS features, aren't they?

If you call that a game, I have a flappy bird that wants to say hi. It was clearly a tech demo, but an impressive one at that, considering it was running on an iPad.

Well Swift isn't really a feature. It's a new programming language which (I think), is just for iOS. Metal is iOS only. It's a graphics API, similar to AMD's Mantle

No Swift is built on top of the Obj-C runtime so is both for iOS and OSX.

Like: Continuity, flatter look, flatter dock, widgets, dark theme. I was afraid I'd hate the icons, but they aren't nearly as bad as iOS. Simplified, but not to the point of ugliness.

Do not like: wayyyy too much transparency. It's OK in OS because you don't have many layers, in OS X with a bunch of windows stacked it'll look a mess. Also, whoever decided to make the green maximize button fullscreen needs to be shot. Luckily, if you option click it you get the old behavior.

Why is Metal only for iOS? OS X needs the graphics love more.

My favorite feature so far on iOS is this. Request desktop site! Now the IMG forums are less annoying to use on iOS!

It would never get off the ground in OS X. Mantle is having a hard enough time gaining support in the Windows world, where gaming is a much bigger deal.

Metal was also designed for the ARM based Ax chips, not the GPU's we have in Mac's (completely different architectures)

I don't see why Metal would have more difficulty getting adoption on OS X than iOS. Many major engines are already supporting it including Unreal Engine 4, Frostbite, CryEngine, and Unity. Aras Pranckevicius from Unity said its the quickest port to a new API they've ever done. If you were porting a DX or Mantle PC game to Mac and you could choose between OpenGL and Metal and Metal is faster and apparently not necessarily harder you might as well choose Metal. Wanting to also support Linux might throw a wrench in things, but as long as Mac gaming remains bigger than Linux gaming, it's needs will probably get priority.

The question is whether Metal is sufficiently abstracted enough to support AMD, nVidia, and Intel GPUs.

I'm also liking iCloud drive. Nice to see iDisk has finally come back, although hopefully this will have 100% less suck when it comes to sync problems.

That being said, Dropbox has become pretty near and dear to me since iDisk went away, what with its broad net of platform support. The fact that my iPod Touch (iOS 6), iPad mini (iOS 7), PowerMac (Leopard), PowerBook (Tiger), MacBook Pro (Mavericks), Tiki (Windows 8.1), nVidia Shield (Android KitKat), and DiskStation NAS (DSM 5) can all share files seamlessly is pretty awesomesauce.

Like, nostalgically I'm happy to see a spiritual successor to iDisk. Practically Drobox, hell even google drive, has far more penetration. I just cant see me using this in any meaningful capacity when I've been using dropbox for years now.

Question, did they even mention API support in OS X Yosemite at all? OpenGL or otherwise? Did they flat out say "Metal is only going to be on iOS... BUT NEVER EVER EVER EVER on OS X?" or something? :)

BTW, the new theme reminds me of some themes I made for currently released operating systems such as...

http://smoke999.devi...phite-409547275

Of course I can't do the kind of transparency they do with my current theming software and it's kinda a no brainer to make a flat'ish color scheme in an OS X theme. Also, the version of the theming software I use that'll allow dark themes is not out yet. So I haven't yet made one.

I've also made several platinum'ish themes... ;)

Examples:

http://smoke999.devi...ripes-409783472

http://smoke999.devi...Theme-410356611

http://smoke999.devi...vours-363522042

http://smoke999.devi...ripes-420121012

It'll be interesting for me to see what Yosemite means for theming efforts.

*update*

I just watched the OS X Yosemite portion of the WWDC Keynote and it seems pretty superficial. Apart from web stuff there's no mention of desktop graphics API updates\changes\additions for OS X.

Also, I notice they are replacing the zoom\fit to content button with the fullscreen button and removing it from the right side. I wonder what we are supposed to do if we want to fit to size\zoom? Double click on the titlebar?

What software are you using to do that, and is that Mavericks?

A Mavericks theme for Yosemite would be the bomb. Awesome functionality, while retaining the loved Aqua eye candy.
