There was a Mac version already, but that ran only on PPC Macs. This is a newly released version.

Somewhat steep system requirements, but finally a true Sim City game for Mac again. Yay! :D

It was released for OS X in the middle of the last decade. It was PPC only. For a long time there was various rumors of Aspyr releasing a UB and there was even a UB beta for Rush Hour but it all fizzled out and nothing ever materialized. Even though they won't be upgrading the old PPC version (this is a new sku, I asked) I'm happy to see a real Sim City available for Modern Macs.

Huzzah. The "new" Sim City can now simply roll over and die a proper death.

I wonder if this means that EA is now:
a) willing to let Aspyr port any game, including new ones, to Mac instead of using Cider
b) willing to let Aspyr update/re-port their existing Mac EA back-catalogue
c) only making a one time exception for Sim City 4, perhaps because Sim City was so poorly received.

Hopefully it's a). It would fit with comments from Respawn about being open to doing a Mac port of the EA published Titanfall with Aspyr.

Aren't the new requirements pretty much just the oldest intel Macs available? I mean.. apart from the OS... unless that's what you are talking about. But hardware wise.. yeah... for example...
  • CPU Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo
  • CPU Speed: 2.2 GHz
Also, a) and b) would be nice. Especially if they ended up bringing some of my now old and belated favorites to the Mac like those EA published UE3 games that never made it to the Mac such as Mirror's Edge and Alice Madness Returns. Madness Returns even includes the original American McGee's Alice so they could "kill two birds with one stone" with that game.

Also, I kinda wonder what happened to their efforts to bring Frostbite to the Mac. I'm keen on that engine because it's powering the upcoming Mirror's Edge reboot\sequel.

I think the requirements more or less are equal to the minimum requirements for Mountain Lion.

There were some with even just a Core Solo, like the first low-end Intel Mac minis.

Yep, basically the requirements are the baseline hardware specs for Mountain Lion support.  A few cards we dropped off the list for performance reasons, ATI 2600 for example.

As to the contract, of course you guys know that I can't say anything.

BUT what I can say is you will be seeing some favorites from us this year with SC4D being the first.  I can also promise a few surprises ;)

Looks good on 6970M. Only performence issue I could find is zooming where it takes second or two to rerender objects. I guess I can't blame Aspyr for that since game is from 2004 where we rocked on single core G4 a G5s :-D

It's great that it's SteamPlay compatible.

Looking at the PC system requirements it's amazing how far we've come. Sim City 4 originally supported graphics cards all the way back to the nVidia TNT2 which wasn't even considered a GPU because it doesn't support hardware transform and lightning much less shaders. It even has a software renderer for even less capable computers.

4 gigs of ram for a 2D game designed for G4 macs? Right... I can run black and white 2 demo very well and Sim City 4 requires that much ram?

Its a 4GB minimum because you cant purchase a rig that doesnt have 4GB that can run modern OSX's.  Its a bit of a sales technicality and has nothing to do with the actual minimums needed.

So what you are saying is that it is possible to run it on a computer that has 2 GB of unused ram like mine? For the record, my rig has a total of 4. I thought most recent versions of OS X like lion need at least 2 GB for running? Or the game still can't run even if you have that much? Also, I don't have 10.8.5.
