Basilisk Games has posted a new forum topic explaining why its website went down during the initial launch of the third installment in its fantasy RPG series, Eschalon: Book III. The final title in the old school fantasy RPG series gives players the chance to answer questions about four powerful gemstones and the clouded past of the protagonist. The game includes a variety of engine updates, new items, new spells, and an open world to explore.

The demand was too great. You animals began grabbing the files like they were the last bottles of water and the world was about to end. The traffic crushed our website.

We called GoDaddy and were given some very bad advice: we were told that in order to fix this problem, we needed to upgrade our hosting platform (they should have just reset our connection and let us take the files offline). We were told the switch would take a couple hours, and that it would be transparent. This was misinformation by the GoDaddy "sales and support" staff. Here's a helpful tip: anytime a company combines "sales" and "support", you are going to get horrible advice. We later found out migrations actually take 24-72 hours, and it wasn't transparent...we'd be down the entire time.

Worse, the GoDaddy first-tier support technicians did not know what they were doing. We were moved from our Linux server to a Windows server. This caused the migration to fail and have to be restarted. After the first move to the new Windows server, we needed to switch again back to Linux, which is another migration of 24-72 hours.

That's nothing.  Just wait until they start playing the game.

At least when they start playing the game, it will work.  Unlike Sim City always-online DRM.

Or do you mean it has the Myth II install feature ?

Either way, I will be purchasing this at some point in 2014.

What this topic needs is a good old fashioned "When I was a kid..." speech about how easy modern gamers have everything. :)

Look at it this way though, if Book III sells well enough they'll be making an entirely new game with a new engine. Perhaps the food requirement/weapon repair issue can be changed for their next outing in role playing fun. Or if you like the old school (to the pain!) stuff maybe they'll institute debilitating diseases, broken bones, and potential permanent maiming as game mechanics.

I wish Basilisk well though, and I hope the launch issues don't prevent or delay the company's ability to start a new project.
