My wife is having problems with iTunes on her MacBook Pro.  She is trying to add some of her CDs to her iTunes library but some of the songs from some of the CDs don't sync to her iPod.  They are in iTunes and will play, but they won't transfer over to her iPod.  She researched the problem and found out that if she uses a sound converter program to convert the CDs to MP3s they should all sync to her iPod after adding them to iTunes.

Well, I got her a couple of sound converting apps: Switch and Audacity which both run fine on my Mac Pro, but won't even launch on her MacBook Pro.  What's the deal with that?  Is there some setting I need to tweak on the MacBook?  I am clicking the button in the dialog box that should allow a program downloaded from the internet on first launch and I've set her prefs to allow all programs to launch, not just those from Apple.  After I OK the dialog box, that's it, nothing happens.  I launch the app again and nothing happens.

What the heck is going on?

I'm not sure what's wrong with the programs you downloaded, but you should be able to convert the CDs to MP3s (or any other format supported by iPods) with iTunes itself.

First of all, in the iTunes settings, you can find the Import settings. In iTunes 11 (the current version) it's under "General" at the bottom of the window. By default, iTunes uses AAC, which should work on the iPod just fine, but you can easily change that to other formats like MP3. When importing CDs with iTunes, the tracks normally get converted into the selected format.

When the CDs are already imported, you can still change the format of the ripped tracks within iTunes: set the import format as described, that right-click on the track in the iTunes window and look for an item called "Create MP3/AAC/whateverformatyouselected version" (or something similar, I can only tell for sure what it's called in German right now). Select that item and iTunes creates a new (additional) version of the song in the desired format.

Last but not least, make sure you have actually enabled in the iPod options that the desired tracks actually will be synced. Under the "Music" tab, you should be able to select whether all tracks and playlists will be synced or only those that are selected in this tab. Under the first tab ("Overview"?), you can also select whether only marked tracks in the library will be synced or all of them. (Marked tracks are those that have a checkmark in the iTunes library in front of the title.)

Yes they were all marked to sync to her iPod, but they don't and it is a known problem.  She researched the problem in the Apple forums, and found others were reporting the same thing.  I'll try using iTunes to convert them and report back, but it was iTunes screwing it up in the first place and it was recommended to try a third party app to convert the tracks.

Meanwhile, I'm still concerned that Switch and Audacity will not run on her MacBook Pro.  Any help with that would be appreciated.

It's only these two programs? Have you checked what the Console log says when you try to run them?

 I actually recognise that SIGCONT stuff as belonging to the process handling in UNIX derivatives. I'm not completely sure what is going on here, but it looks a bit more fundamental.

I believe I remember that your wife's computer was a new Retina MBP and I would assume that it came with Mavericks, right? It's a bit of a long shot, but have you tried disabling App Nap ("Get Info" on the program and set the checkmark on "Disable App Nap" when possible – not all programs have this option).

Just did some research and found some people with the same problem with other programs, for instance here. It seems this is somehow related to the privileges.

Great link.  I found a command there to run in Terminal that did the trick, chmod -R 0755 appname.app  Thanks!  Also I took your advice about changing the import setting in iTunes and a CD that didn't import for her properly is now syncing as it should.  Thanks again!  It's a shame you never took me up on being a forum moderator, this is just another in a long list of examples of who you are and what you can do here.  Let me know if you want to sign up, the offer stands.

I also, long ago, set the setting in iTunes for my iPad to convert all songs (onto the iPad) as AAC.  saves a lot of space on the device and ive never had a sync issue that way.  Does take quite a while to do the first sync, though.

So your reward for his helpfulness is to try to dump the thankless task of forum moderator on him? Nice. :-)

On a more serious note: thank you, forum moderators, for keeping this place running smoothly.

There; it is no longer a thankless task. It is a thank-once task.

Hey, that would be almost 100% more thanks than I usually get in my job!
